the P0420 code can be the result of a bad O2 sensor. The MP4-12C has 4, one before and one after each CAT. If the one after the CAT isn't working right, it will throw this code. If it isn't working at all, it will throw a different code. As for the engine burning a lot of oil in the past. That can absolutely cause your CAT to fail. It will degrade the CAT quite rapidly, essentially 'aging' it very quickly. So if the problem with the engine is fixed quickly, the CAT will still work well enough to pass the internal emissions tests of the car. But as 2 years pass and the CAT ages naturally with use and especially just sitting around in a garage, it will then just be too degraded and can throw the code. Had exactly this happen on my Audi just now.
@OMGWTFLOLSMH5 жыл бұрын
First thing I thought of was a bad O2 sensor, but if he has a decent code reader, it should have a separate test for the O2 sensors.

I noticed several comments below talking about the O2 sensors and all but I tend to agree that the car's ECU is advanced enough that it would differentiate between a faulty sensor and an inefficiency with the system. When my VW B5 threw that code out...it ended up being the PCV tubes were all clogged up with motor oil sludge left behind from normal driving and years of neglect. Turned out it was a common thing for these cars even with different engines. I replaced the PCV tubing and the code never came back. It's been over a year since that was done.

In order to get the code to come back P0420, you need to be driving at cruise control on a flat road at 35-45 MPH, that's when the engine runs in closed loop mode and the rear O2 sensors will be monitoring the efficiency of the catalyst. OR, just buy an O2 sensor extension and install it, and re-test.

Emissions errors like the one you have, generally require a few drive cycles for the ECU to set the code. This is to prevent temporary load-ups of the cat (like your McLaren mechanic suggested), not running with a warm enough engine, too short drives and all that to trigger a light. It could very well be that the oil two years ago accelerated the wear of the cat in such a way that it now failed well before it's due date.
@Travel.drone875 жыл бұрын
Hoovie, you have an exhaust leak, in 99% of the times, that code is triggered by an exhaust leak that can be very small and you don't hear it. Check the mufflers and the exhaust, pay close attention where they merge.
@petrsulc11685 жыл бұрын
well not 99%, but it could be. And since it has stainless steel exhaust and its relatively new, leak could apear only at connections, and i doubt that in McLaren they do cheap out on new seals when reinstalling exhaust. So the catalytic converter failure is definetly high possibility here, more so if the engine has been eating oil, which is biggest destroyer of catalyzatic converters. As tyler says in video

@@arielatom03that is correct. Even the slightest intake leak produces un-metered air into the system. @@glider1232 well yeah I saw a sprinter van on fire on my way home from a doctor appointment this morning things happen but overall it's ten times more reliable...also the 12C definitely fits in the hoopty fleet better than a 570s
I had the same error code on my car, found a replacement catalytic converter at a used parts store for $80, no issue since then.

on some vehicles, something as simple as a leaking intake gasket can cause the dreaded bank1 codes. this is due to it messing up the A/F ratio and it throws the system out of expected spec. sure, its usually the cat, but not always.

I both am, and am not surprised that McLaren hasn't done something to really offer some solid fixes/updates to the 12C (aside from just offering to extend the warranty for a really long time). Obviously people seem to buy the new cars all the same, but I think it would be a classy move and probably sway some people to look at their newer cars if they're serious about rectifying the mistakes they made with their first attempt. I'm not sure what all that would entail (offer updated trans, less finicky ECU, and publish some best practices to avoid the suspension leaks and other use-case maladies I've read about). Either way, I'm definitely going to pay attention to Hoovie's experiences with the car.

Unplug O2 sensors. Run fuel low. Fill heavy with SeaFoam and run a good tank through at operating temps. If it just needs to be cleaned, drive it hard like that and you might be surprised.

Here, in eastern Europe, when the check engine light is on (in our old diesel cars), we just assume is the EGR or emissions problem. So we decide just to ignore it and move on with our life. :))

Did you recognise, that the car didn't accelerate linear? You can hear it at the engine noises during accelerating. The rpms run not strraight higher and higher, the increasing is interrupting or better slow down for very short times. Only "normal" reason could be, that the car is loosing grip and reduces power. Otherwise there must be a mistake that the car cannot acceletate freely. Try to hear it at 5:12 and 5:21 - 5:25 and 10:02 - 10:08. Plus strange noise at 5:26-5:27 and 10:03. What do yo mean?

Isn't the engine in the back? wouldn't the exhaust be in the back? pop a couple O2 sensor extenders on the rear sensors to enhance the reading diffrence between front/back sensor readings aka Cats working.

Just take off oxygen sensors and look inside with FullHD borescope ($50 on ebay) from all sides and you will see if it is black (clogged), melted or designated in pieces. Mine was missing about 40% of cells on rear side of cat.conv. No cleaning can help with that, only a new one. On mine error was coming after couple hours of driving when computer has enough data to conclude for sure that cat is not doing its job. Also the check light can stay off for weeks if you do not reach the temps needed for the system to run properly.
