Started playing with Revised / The Dark in ‘94. This will always be a special set for me. The fact that it was 1994 meant I didn’t have access to the internet. eBay/TCGplayer etc didn’t exist, and I only saw older cards behind glass at my LGS or when they were used to kill me in tournaments. Can’t really describe to younger players how different it was not having immediate access to information and the ability to buy and sell cards globally. Where you lived defined your MTG experience. In fall 1994 I wrote a letter to WotC asking for a list of all the cards they made, and they sent me a nice response with a thick printout of all the cards from Alpha - The Dark. It was such a nice thing to have. I wish I held onto it.

This was a great video. My first starter was revised…remember 13 year old me opening it on the steps outside the game store and running back to excitedly show them the Royal Assassin I pulled. Pulled a badlands and a Serra as well. Funny how that first opening stuck with me…. Thank for the nostalgia trip brother!

Very welcome, thank you for taking the time to comment and Royal is such a great pull for your first booster!

Thank you for the background on the Revised Set, especially the information about Stasis' art and the wizard hiding in the "walls." This was my "alpha" set as well. I have been an avid D&D player since I was very little and remember reading about MtG in Dragon Magazine, but didn't make the foray into the game until my sister bought me a Revised Starter Deck in September of '94. I remember getting an Obsianus Golem, a Fork, a Scrubland, and a Craw Wurm: which was my favorite card in the box (it is now the only Alpha card I own--I once owed an Alpha Black Lotus, but foolishly sold it in '08, before the huge price explosions). It was through finding your channel on KZbin in June of 2020 that I got back into the game--and specifically old school, long after having sold off an incredible collection I used to have. Since then, I've put together a little collection of Eternal Central-legal cards (with some CE power), and have inspired my group of D&D players to join the old school game as well. I think back on the game's influence on me, especially Revised. I designed and published a role-playing game adventure during the pandemic--and I realize that quite a bit of inspiration for the "module" came from the great artwork from these cards. MtG has not only been a fun game, but a path to achieve one of my bucket list goals! You highlighted Magnetic Mountain in this episode. I was thinking about how bad that card would be against your "Timmy's Spellbook"; however, your City in a Bottle would probably be proof against it. I also was thinking about how many cards actually have English writing in the art. The only one I can think of is Contract from Below--I don't see any others. I'd love to hear from someone else if I am missing anything! Keep up the great work, Timmy!

There is English writing on Eureka and Goblin Artisans, too. On "newer" cards, there is English writing on Orcish Librarian (Ice Age) and Browse (Alliances) - both are by Phil Foglio, and I wonder if the illustration of Browse might have been a sort of prototype for the illustration of Orcish Librarian, since the motifs are very similar.

Agreed, I think a 4th Ed and Chr card pool is also great fun. No duals, but you do have City of Brass. Might be interesting to try out :D

Ik ben zelf fan van de klassieke Millstone build met Wall of Air en Wall of Swords. Prachtig en je kunt er best een mooie revised variant van maken.

In 1994, Revised was following in the footsteps of Unlimited, which like all of the sets before, were all sold out and in massive shortage. Throughout the early and middle of the Revised run, a LOT of people were building a set of Revised. It was so prevalent that like 90% of rares were worth $1.50 or more, which is crazy since the wholesale price of a pack was less than $1.50. That means people were buying all sorts of rares that would be considered 10c W/50c R (W = wholesale, R = retail) rares in normal sets. Imagine paying $1.50 for unplayable rares as singles. I was buying boxes of Revised in LA for $51-$56 a box where you get 36 packs a box. That's about $1.50 a pack. Considering you had a bunch of double digit rare monsters (Nightmare, Shivan, Gaea's Liege, Force, Doppleganger, Royal Assassin, etc.) and ten dual lands plus a bunch of other interesting rares (Northern Paladin, Pirate Ship, Armageddon, Wrath Of God, Wisp, Birds, Bad Moon, Crusade, Fork, etc.). Add on top of that a ton of valuable uncommons, from Serra Angel to Soul Net. The number of fast-selling uncommons was like double digits and in every color including brown. It was almost like printing money. I could have bought a ton of earlier sets but it was guaranteed money buying Revised. While washed out white-border wasn't popular with people with older cards, who I wanted to trade for badly, (Beta, Arabians, Antiquities, etc.) all those players with those old cards were willing to trade for dual lands.

Amazing, that everybody wanted a complete set. Was there a special reason? I do remember everybody falling in love with the 4th edition boosters 😂 I never saw it as washed out btw, but I’m super biased, because Revised is my Alpha set. I still love the pencil coloring of revised. We still play revised only from time to time, just for that nostalgia kick.

@@TimmytheSorcerer Actually it was nothing special. Everyone collected sets back then of cards. If you came into Magic from sports cards. The 80s and early 90s was all about building sets for future investment. If they came from comic books, people collected sets of comic book cards and there were hundreds including the super famous 1990 Impel Marvel Universe to niche sets like Olivia (the pinup artist) and The Crow movie cards. So set building was the norm and people just applied it to Magic. They would have done the same to the previous sets but those cards were too hard to find and sets went from hundreds of $$ to thousands…and that was just in 1995. By the time 4th rolled around, almost no one was building sets anymore and there were a lot of 10 cent rares.

Amazing full Revised play set collection 👍! And interesting facts and combinations! I'm working on that too... actually with too many sets at once😊😅 ...I think I'd better do it set by set🤔😊

I started with 4th ed in the beginning of 1996. Some friends were buying up Revised boosters and starters, and I still regret not getting in on that investment. Dual lands are worth so much these days.

Very nice, Timmy, congrats to your collection. I watched this video with a good amount of melancholy. I sold my collection in the late 90ies and this video brings back memories and makes me kind of sad now. Nevinyrral´s Disk is a reference to Larry Niven, an US hard Sci-Fi writer (famous for Ringworld and The Mote in God´s Eye). There was a tournament in the "Auenland" game shop in Dortmund with the rules of the original rule book (40 cards minimum, 1 card ante, no limitation on the number of individual cards). Guess which deck won? 12x Swamp, 12x Dark Ritual, 14x Contract from Below and 2x Drain Life. It won every single game in its first turn.

Hey Timmy! Nice collection! I always have great time watching your videos! Keep up the good work! (FYI; conservator does prevent damage, not just life ;))

Thnx Paul 🙌, very true, but I want it to prevent dmg to creatures as well, like a super samite healer or something 😂

Nice video! My collection of Revised consists of a Serra Angel and a Lord of Atlantis (and maybe a Benalish Hero?). I think that Castle loses a bit of its flavor in the new text. It makes more sense if the creatures are only protected when they stay behind the castle walls where they can protect the wizard by blocking. If a Serra Angel or a Zephyr Falcon keep the +0/+2 when attacking, it's as if they bring a piece of the castle wall with them into battle ;-) So the new text makes Castle a better card, but it makes less sense "flavor-wise".
@TimmytheSorcerer2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, but I’m still happy with the change because it makes castle slightly better and os needs more castles in play 🏰 🤩
@herlocksholmes93692 жыл бұрын
@@TimmytheSorcerer I hear you - I'm just sorry for the poor Zephyr Falcons who need to fly with to giant pieces of castle wall when their owner has two Castles in play ;)

Nice collection. My goal is to at least get the cards which were left out of 4th edition. Given todays prices of duals it will take some time. Drain power still works as intended under Swedish rules. If you tap your lands in response to casting and do not use the generated mana, it is drained along with the other content of the mana pool once drain power resolves. Conservator was reworded to prevent damage instead of life loss. Life loss prevention would have been pretty unique.
@TimmytheSorcerer2 жыл бұрын
Thnx Anonymous, and you’re on point with Drain Power 🙌 Looking forward to start brewing with the Drain 🥳 and yes, conservator is reworded, but it still can’t be used to prevent dmg from creatures like for example Samite Healer can. Just wish it could’ve been used a little more flexible 🤷♂️

The current Oracle wording for Conservator is; “Prevent the next 2 damage that would be dealt to you this turn.” Also, loss of life is not necessarily damage, but all “damage dealt to a play causes them to lose that much life.” mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Damage
