Hello friends! Although there are not a lot of drastic changes that have been made to the overall building method of my whips, a lot of minor details have changed, and when added up they make the current method quite different the one seen in the previous video released in 2015. If this channel has helped you learn how to make whips, please support my work on patreon.com/nickswhipshop for as little as $1 per month. Doing so will help me continue to make more of these videos and increase the production frequency as well!

I’m about to make my first nylon whip sale to a good friend. Your videos and advice have helped me in countless ways. The whip I made is quality and beautiful. It wouldn’t be that way if I hadn’t run across your channel. The time and effort that goes into making a whip is immense. That’s why I am donating the sale of this whip to your Patreon. I know how much you put in to your whips and making videos. Just a little thank you for all your hard work. It is greatly appreciated!

another great vid Nick thank you for taking the time to making them. I'm onto my 4th whip now and really starting to get a good handle on it. I've had a thought that might help all whip makers, that is to keep a whip construction diary. I haven't kept one for my first builds but regret it now because I look at them and can't remember the fine details and therefore how I can improve on the next build. Diary started now !

Nick thank you so much for all your videos! I have learned so much from you and you do an excellent job of explaining and demonstrating that makes it very easy to follow. Just as an FYI I ordered some 650 paracord a little while back (not coreless and not from the source you mentioned) but it was from a very popular source. Anyway I learned the hard way that not all 650 is the same and some is actually a hair smaller than 550 in diameter. I plan on ordering from your source very soon!

Great video!!:) This will be one of my next two whips. Planning for a 5ft 16 plait bullwhip first, already got the core, shot load and handle foundation ready, as well as for this 8ft whip. I‘m using 750 paracord for the core strand and 4mm spring steel for the handle, fully covered in paracord and about 3“ sticking out in the back so I can tie a loop to it and then use a hook for plaiting

Some additional footage on the transition knot and turks head knot would be great and very helpful. I think there are many different types of knots, at least it seems that way. But I am new and just received my supplies. I only have the core done, so far. I started today, and immediately had to go to work. Of course! I got home and you released this. Right on time, thanks for the help.

I was just 13 years old when I dreamed about having a bullwhip. I am from the Philippines, it is hard to find a bullwhip in our country and as a young man, it is impossible for me to have one that time, made me realize that there was no hope having one. LOL Now that I am 26 years old, I remember my childhood dream to have a bullwhip, and now I am inspired to build a bullwhip for myself. And I am learning a LOOOOOT from you NICK! Hey Nick, i am currently working on a 9.5 foot bullwhip in 16 plait using this method, but something that works for me is not tightening the strands until i get ready to plait with that strand. It helps with speed and it also keeps my whips super tight and very springy and lively.

Once again great video. On the last whipcast, #8 to be exact I noticed people having trouble making the falls with the bigger 550 paracord needle. I would recommend using the micro or nano permiloc needle. They work great for making falls out of 550 paracord.

Nick, I started out doing what you are doing, learning to braid, when I was about 14 years old. At that time, the only instructional material available was in the form of books written by those of my age today for young guys like you at that time who wanted to learn how to do this form of craft. I have to give a notice to the man whom I consider my "mentor" at the time, the author of a couple of books on making horse gear and whips and generally learning the old ways of preparing and processing the leather or rawhide he used for his gear. HIs name is Bruce Grant and his books are surprisingly still available through outlets like Amazon and other printing sources. One of his best books is named "The Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding", another simply titled "Leather Braiding", and one called "How to Make Cowboy Horse gear". He also authored a small book, which contained a condensed version of all the tips and tricks of his other leather handling books entitled, "Whips and Whip Making". I cannot help but believe that you have already read at least one of these books and have taken the knowledge of what he wrote and are using that in your work as I did when I was much younger! As life goes, many times, I had other priorities which needed more attention than simply braiding and working with leather and those interests dropped by the wayside as I traveled through to this portion of my life as I approach the 80 year mark. Now, just after my 78th birthday, I have decided to get back into this world of leatherworking and your videos immediately caught my eye as I scanned through the recent listing on KZbin to get caught up on my favorite leather workers accomplishments. The last few years I have slowly slipped back into the leather work as I bought new hand tools and refreshed my mind on those few things I learned when I was a teenager. My point in all this background information is to tell you that you have a special knack for passing on, what may have taken you untold hours of trial and error in perfecting your craft, to others with your tutorials. Watching your videos on just the whipmaking part of braiding techniques is like a Deja vu for me as old memories of spending hours with a homemade thong cutter stripping out literally thousands of yards of rawhide thongs, as small as 1/32" for braiding horse halter trim and cutting and processing leather strips for the actual braiding of the halters, headstalls, reins, and other horse gear came flooding back. I followed the ways of the South American and Australian "cowboys", Gauchos, and wranglers as written in Grant's encyclopedia and I learned how to properly turn an eighth inch rawhide strip into a perfectly round thong by wetting it, drawing it through progressively round holes drilled into a hardwood board until the wet fibers were " transformed" into a round thong the likes of which is almost impossible to do in this day and age. I think that you are deserving of all the accolades you get and all the braiding business you receive through your YT videos and I simply ask that, as you progress through the levels of your craft, you will always keep sight of the fact that anything you can braid with string, nylon, paracord, or even roots of plants, you can also make from top grade leather or properly prepared rawhide and, at the end of the workday, you will be much more rewarded for your labor by those who still recognize good quality leather work and are willing to pay for it. There is no limit to the price of well made leather crafted work gear in the world of cowboys here and in other countries, who spend their days with whips cracking herding large herds of cattle and other animals. And the gear on their horses which keep them safe and provide a means of "steering" their mounts where they need to be is as important at the ropes and whips that they use to "steer" those cows. There is every bit of difference in well made horse gear vs. the run o' the mill stuff as there is in the difference in a Ford Mustang and a great ride of a Rolls Royce or a Maserati.

Awesome! Let’s see if I can get the material around my neck of the woods... The sinew I had to order from amazon, and the stuff I got isn’t exactly what I expected. Better than what I used as substitute (dental floss... for its flatness)... Working on the snakewhip, hoping it turns out as good as the last bullwhip that I made for a friend. Cracks easy and makes quite a pop. A little stiff still, but I’m working on getting that nice and even plait all the way down. Thanks for the quality content!

I do have one suggestion when you’re making whip tutorial videos. In the description or anywhere it doesn’t matter I think it would be a cool idea if you have approximately how much paracord you need to make this whip. Aside from that awesome videos I love them👍

Cesalino - 650 and 550 cord are almost the exact same. If you can find paracord that can fit BBs, you can use it. Since most 550 paracord cant hold BBs, sinker cord is used. Hope that helps.

Hey Nick... I bought a whip from a pretty well know whip maker. I'll just say he lives on an island. I asked him how he got the transition area so stiff. I mean you can't even bend the 8- 10 inches of transition. What he told me he combines sinew with dyneema. Go over the transition with sinew then use dyneema then sinew over the dyneema. I tried it on one of my whips that was kind of like a wet noodle. I just went over the transition with hockey tape first. Then tried him method. Wow.. super stiff. Cracks great. I think that's his secret. I'm telling you. Try it. It works fantastic. Do the criss cross pattern. Actually I ran out of dyneema so I used Kevlar thread. I guess you could use either one. Give it a try!!! Take care. ..I need to watch your video.

Have you considered ⅜" paracord for the core and load it with ¼" steel slingshot ammo? They fit perfectly together and adds nice weight! Another question, you mentioned the core length was 6'-1" after dropping all but 6 strands, little confused on this part. I assuming you cut it from the original 8'-1" to allow for the twisting of the last four strands on the 2nd belly? Thanks, Boss!

I havnt even made very many "bull" whips (1000's of Jockey whips) but I found a trick that works well 4 attaching the core 2the rod & its cheaper somehow..?!? Also helps the transition area taper..! I tried a pc. of threaded rod & HAD 2taper the end 2get it started... But it created such a smooth transition... I LUV IT..! Also seemed 2make a stronger bond of core 2handle... Just wanted 2share this w/a professional & see what ya think... Whip seems 2have more spring as well...🤠

hi Nick love your videos...when you measure the 6’1” of over all length is it from the edge of the handle or the transition point? thanks

Hi Nick, Im new to whip making and thank you so much for best content in youtube! This helps ALOT. One question, are you using waxed artificial sinew? Does regular one work as well? I was wondering, if I can use paracord guts for the same purpose?
@SwankySpitfire
@SwankySpitfire 4 жыл бұрын
Hello! I’m not as good as nick at making whips however, yes I use the nylon core of paracord for the same purpose as artificial sinew. All I’ll say is that if you use the nylon core you’ll have to pull extremely tightly because it doesn’t have the same strength as the artificial sinew.

So if i wanted to make a bullwhip with the same length but a shorter 8 inch handle compared to the 10 inch handle shown. all i'd need to do is start with a smaller handle and follow the steps the same?

I have a suggestion Nick, when you add the BB laden cord to the steel rod, have you tried heat shrink tubing instead of the blacktape ?My thoughts are that the tubing would hold the bb's better and you would get a more consistent finish.

Hey Nick great vid! But i ran into a problem. I cut the exact lengths needed for the second belly, but towards the end of the belly, I only have four strands left to plait with and about a foot and a half of sinker cord left which is obviously wrong considering you had 6 strands left when you reached the end of the sinker cord. Where did i go wrong? Thanks in advance!
@aidanthornbury
@aidanthornbury 6 жыл бұрын
You didn't go wrong, I had the same thing happen to me (almost finished the second belly right now). I think one of two things happened. 1. When he said "the core stops at 6ft 1in," he may have actually misspoken and meant 5ft and 1 inch, which would make a lot more sense with the lengths. Or, 2. The recommended strand lenghts are incorrect.

@Elvenking83
@Elvenking83 5 жыл бұрын
@@Desiccate-water It doesn't really matter that much. Just plait the left over 4 strands and taper them the same as the first belly. (asuming you have some core left). Otherwise just add a couple of feet to the strand lenghts of the second belly and you'll be fine.

How do you know how many to go over and under? Or when you start to lose strands is there a list somewhere?

Hi Nick working om my first whip now and started plaiting my second belly also whith the 2 strands on the handle but when I finish the handle the front side looks amazing but at the back the pattern doesn"t follow around the whip is it ment to be that way because I know it is only a time saving method. thanks for the greate vids.

Thanks for watching Jan, sorry you're having trouble. The handle plaiting pattern is a bit different in so far as you need to pull back behind the handle more so than with the herringbone. I have a video here that should help. Let me know! kzbin.info/www/bejne/fma5lJevi5yfas0

Hi Nick, yet another excellent video - very clear and concise. I do have one question. Is there any reason you couldn't just use standard paracord, with the core strands in place, as the core of the whip? Assuming of course that you'd gut the top end where it will be shot loaded and mounted to the handle. It just seems it would be nice and round rather than trying to force flat sinker cord into a round shape.

550, 650, most paracords are inconsistent in how easy it is to pass BBs through. Sinker cord is wider, allowing them to be easily inserted.

I saw on your instagram a bullwhip you made in white dacron, instead of paracord. Where'd you get it? Is it the same dacron you use for binding?
