Marty, I really appreciate the personal touch you give to these top 10 lists. Knowing how an artist I really respect felt when first hearing these songs is so insightful and great. "You are who you were when", as a sociologist once said, and that applies especially to the music we love. I grew up in the 60's/70's era, and I can remember sitting in my dad's car in Berkley, MI, while he went into a store for a minute. He left the AM radio on (even before the days of FM). The Doors came on playing "Light My Fire". As far as I know, that is the very first rock song I had ever heard. My mom and dad were more into country western (Hey, good lookin', whatcha got cookin') and folk (Green, green, it's green they say on the far side of the hill). I would listen to the radio for hours just waiting to hear that song again. (I was too young, and we were too poor, to have money to buy a 45 RPM record, back then.)

Man this was one of the best and interesting videos you've made so far! You really take one on a time travel and giving us a sense on how it was .. not even in terms of music as it only had such a great impact on social culture. Thanks for that especially as I'm curruntly very into the 90s Grunge scene etc. Would have loved to be at this RHCP concert you were talking about as they and PJ belong to my absolut favourits! I agree, I think that was one of the best concerts I had ever been to. It was Love Trilogy the opened with when Flea descended from the rafters upside down. The funny thing I remember on the night I went Eddie Vedder was trying to get everyone to get out of their seats and no one was really paying attention to him. I don't think they even turned off the house lights. I went to Lollapalooza that next summer and everyone was crazy for Pearl Jam. What a difference a few months made. Love the channel, keep up the awesome work!

I have been following your vids for a few months now have learnt some new riffs and theory that have really helped me advance - you're a fantastic player and really know your stuff. But mostly what I love is that your affection for the music - you have eclectic taste and don't get elitist about any particular genre, your teaching and presenting is very down to earth and unpatronising and there's nothing phoney about your content. This could have easily been a stock 'top ten' list just to get hits but it's clear these tracks mean a lot to you and it's great to hear some anecdotes about your influences, they make the videos that much more enjoyable.

The thing that stuck out to me most about this video was the similarity of our stories. I'm about the same age as you and my experience in the 90s is similar to yours. At the time, I was into Phish, Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler et al and had no appreciation for most of the songs featured here, but as I have aged and nostalgia has set in, I have an appreciation for that music that I couldn't feel back then.

To know the 90s was 30 years ago is pretty mind blowing to me haha i was born in 85 and I swear the 90s feel just like yesterday but also so far away behind us. It’s comical to think that in the 80s and 90s ppl was dying to get to the future. We just couldn’t wait to see the future. Well now the future is finally here and we are dying to go back in time to much simpler days.

This is the decade I started playing guitar. I really got into guitar when grunge came around. These guys made it simple and had great lyrics. I wasn't skilled enough to be a hair metal or led zeppelin style player. Grunge gave me an outlet

Hi from New Zealand :-) Thanks for all your lesson vids Marty, my guitar journey has come a long way thanks to you. I'm 38 now and have been a HUGE fan of 90's music since my high school days. Great stories behind your favorite riffs too. A very similar top 10 to mine. I would add Machinehead by BUSH also.

Pearl Jam story reminded me of walking into a bar in Honolulu in 1979. Band was tearing up the place and I was wondering who the idiot wearing the English school boy suit was. First time I ever saw or heard of AC/DC. Like your vid.
