@KatieKookaburra6 жыл бұрын
WOW!!!!!! You are inspiring me - what would your tips be for a 400km?? :) Any help welcome please x
@TheMonsterPool6 жыл бұрын
My 430 km ride was a beautiful race in Norway (Jotunheimen Rundt) in a national park in the mountains (4609m elevation). My 503 km ride was a 24 hour charity ride for children at a hospital, which I rode solo for the most part (easier and faster in a group). It's probably best to talk about the charity ride, since it wasn't in a race environment (I wanted to go for 500km since my sponsor payed per km). It's all about pacing, when going very long distances. Keep the wattages quite low throughout (I tried to go for 150w avg, but ended up lower than that) and keep fueling a lot. A 400 km ride is about 8-8500 kcal. It's all about the carbs. I like to mix it up with some rice for instance, since I'll get tired of energy gels / bars in the long run. I would drink a small amount about every 5-10 minutes and have some carbs 3 times an hour (up to 60-70g per hour - I think the body can digest up to around that point per hour, maybe a bit more). The duration of 400 km is up to four hours longer compared to 300 km, which also can have an effect. In Norway I got quite sleepy around hour 17-18, and I could have fallen asleep on the bike, so I had to take a 15 minute power nap at the side of the road (it was a hard race, made me more tired). The hardest part though, can be neck or backside pain, if you aren't used to long rides. Especially getting back on the bike after a break 18 hours in can be a bit painful. I think you are on the right track with your epic 300 km ride. You can do 400 km for sure and doing around 150w avg should be fine, since your ftp and w/kg is almost the same as mine (4). My longest ride, which I did with my uncle: www.strava.com/activities/614104753 My uncle and I are thinking about doing the Dragon Ride L’Etape Wales if we can get the logistics and everything to match (he's in Iceland and I am in Denmark).

Hopefully later in the year I'll ride beyond the 220km, but not sure about 300 though. If I do attempt that sort of distance, I think I'll probably take a leaf out of your book and enter a 300km Audax for a bit of extra motivation.

@barrygarfield22036 жыл бұрын
Wow. That’s fantastic ! You should be so proud. Love the happiness and joy that you exude in your video! Curious how you paced yourself. What was your average speed? I did a 100K ride yesterday - poured just as we started (about 300 riders in different groups), and probably went too fast for the first 50K as the way back had steady winds directly in our faces of 18-20mph and gusts of 22-25. Was brutal and exhausting and temperature also climbed to about 85-88 degrees...
@KatieKookaburra6 жыл бұрын
Bloody hell that sounds a brutal ride that Barry. Well done for doing it. Pace wise, average 24km per hour. But it was fairly flat. I don't ever really look at speed - I look at power and how I'm feeling :) Speed can mean so many different things such as headwind, hills and other factors make speed an arbitrary thing to look at :)
@barrygarfield22036 жыл бұрын
Katie Kookaburra , I agree- I don’t have a power meter so for me it’s cadence and speed ... but I definitely didn’t pace properly to have enough in the tank to fight my way back... my next goal is 100 miles, but definitely has to be a day with little wind and before the high humidity and temperatures hit 90-100 which will be most of the summer starting in end of May here. Thanks again for keeping me motivated and bringing us along!

@KatieKookaburra6 жыл бұрын
Thanks and very exciting you’re doing a 320km! I tend to do shorter rides in the week up to a big one just spinning the legs gently. Nothing too big. Just rest up and get lots of sleep and water. And remember to carb up a few days before the event. Does that help? You will be fine. Just don’t start off to fast and take it steady.

Amazing 300k Katie! Thank you so much for sharing your experience😎 A 300 is on my bucket list.... one day...maybe...200 was long enough 😬😅 For your 300, how do you keep your Garmin charged up for that kind of distance? My friend and I did a 78 miler and the navigation sucked his battery. A nice fella in Car Phone Warehouse kindly charged it whilst we had a cafe stop. We'd have been scuppered if his Edge 820 had have conked out. PS I'm vegan too. Well over 2 years now. It's one of the best things I've ever done☺

Oooh that one is a BEAST! I would say do a fair few hilly 300kms in the run up. Not too close but just to get you used to being in the saddle that long. Also, what hearing do you have? Would suggest the lowest gearing you can fit. I have a compact on the front and a 40 on the back. Yup it’s a MTB cassette and it’s amazing on long hilly days!
