That’s fabulous Claire. I was taught by a very close family friend at age 13 to crochet. She taught me a granny square & the 1st round / centre was 4 bobbles, from there we built the corners with regular shells & on we went. To this day I’ve never seen a pattern or tutorial for the type of granny I was taught. Thanks for sharing!

I remember helping my mom make a Chevron stitch afghan. In fact, together we made at least 2 of them. I was around 12 to 13 at that time. I didn't do much crochet again until the late 90's, then on my own I crocheted a blanket for my daughter's bed. Funny thing is, she slept in a twin & by the time I stopped, her blanket was easily large enough for at least a queen sized bed. 😊 That project helped me get through some bad nights, it truly was therapy for me.

My very first crochet project was an Elmo hat. I saw a picture of a crocheted Elmo hat on Pinterest..I think...and since my niece was obsessed with Elmo I thought it would be perfect. Just one little snag...I couldn't crochet to save my life. I took to KZbin..I watched one of your videos and one from Crochet Crowd...had some lunch..gathered my supplies...found your video again...and within five minutes I was crocheting! I got the pattern for the hat...crocheted it...and it was so cute! Absolutely perfect, thanks to you and your incredible teaching!

My first afghan was a scrapghan that I ignored the suggested hook size and mixed yarn weights. When it was finally finished, it was 5 feet wide and 8 feet long! And with a million ends, all over the blanket, that needed to be sewn in! I can't remember how long it took to finish but I gave it to a friend. I nicknamed it the 'octopus'.😆 Your first hat would be very sweet on a doll. Have a wonderful day!

Hi Clare! That little hat is really cute. My first project was a scarf and I used black yarn. BIG mistake. It was narrow and wide in spots. I threw it under my desk because I was so discouraged. About 6 to 8 months later I picked it up and unraveled it. I watched a proper crocheter and learned about counting the posts/stitches and made a proper scarf. It wasn’t perfect and I still should have used a brighter color but I was so proud 😊

I retired three years ago, we moved and were remodeling the house so i couldn't unpack all my quilting. I bought a skein of yarn and a hook and looked on youtube for how to crochet. I made wonky washcloths until they started looking straight, then placemats and moved to a blanket. I have literally made hundreds of items since but i love that crooked washcloth.

I made three projects in high school Home Economic in 1974. Knitted a cap and crochet one also. Then crochet granny square pillows for couch for my Mom for Christmas. Was several years after collage before I picked up again, mostly pot holders, baby blankets. Now 20 years later I'm retired back to hat's, baby blankets, and rugs from plarn, at 64 hands hurt lots of days, but still going. By far the strangest thing made was sleeves for handles of cast iron skillets. Thanks Clair.

It’s not hideous!!!! It’s adorable. My Nanny(grandmother) taught me but she lived far away, 3000mi to be sure and was suffering from dementia. She would sometimes forget what she taught me, but it helped me having to go over different stitches. But we kept everything simple and beginner level so I had to teach myself the rest because sadly she past away before we could move me up to intermediate. My first item was a scarf. A green scarf that I got so many compliments on which was so embarrassing because i knew how bad it was. I think ppl just likes the color. It’s made with the homespun type yarn so now it almost looks like muppet hair. Ugh!!!! My first granny square went into the blanket I was making it for. I think my Nanny would be incredibly proud of what I can do now. I do embroidery, I knit, and I much better at crochet that I was which makes my heart so happy when I think of her. I just wish I would have started earlier she we could have done projects together.

I am pretty sure that I made granny squares first, since that is what my grandmother taught me. But I don't recall if I actually turned them into a blanket or not. I do recall one of the very first things I made was a crochet thread floppy hat. If I recall, I thought I did a pretty good job. It fit my head, but I couldn't figure out, at my young age, how to keep the wide brim from falling in my face. I didn't keep it. I had one ball of that thread that grandma gave me and I took things apart and reused it many times to figure out how to make things. WITH THREAD!!! YIKES!!!
@sandranevins21444 жыл бұрын
Well my first try was knitting a hot pad. Taken apart so many times the yarn could not be saved. My first granny square well, let's say turned out to be a triangle. I kept it, some where. Happy accident, lol. Peace.

My first project was a "lap" blanket made out of double crochet. I gave it my grandmother and later when I looked at it I realized it was too small and I had dropped a stitch which created a big hole since I was using chunky yarn. I cleaned it up later with a border and an applique to cover the hole.

I learned crochet 55+ years ago, but put it down for several years until I took my oldest boy, a 1.5 year old at the time, to Minnesota in winter. I knew he needed a hat - I could make one, sure... What I made did keep warm, but about as grotesque as possible. My Mom kept it, and even wore it herself (OMG!).

I made a huge afghan that went from lap size wide to at least a single bed size as I added stitches to the sides regularly. I made it with a huge hook so I could see the stitches. Believe it or not my son has it still. It is almost 50 years old and sad to say has finely been given to his dog for a bed. I was so proud of it and I guess it showed because when I had the kids they all wanted it so it was passed down from oldest to youngest. I taught myself to knit and crochet the year I was married. I have loved crochet all these years but knit has always been difficult for me.

I've always taken a picture of everything I've made (because my memory is awful), and I just had a look through all my pics, and the earliest I could find was a headband I made when I first started learning how to crochet through your channel, Clare - it was dated 6/10/12 - so I have to assume the headband was one of your patterns :) Unfortunately, I wasn't wise enough to write down which pattern I had used on the pic, but it defo looks like one of your easier patterns :) The next thing I made was a baby bonnet - it's the most hideous thing I've ever made, I think, and I've still got it tucked away as a reminder! Lol

I remember my first hat: I'd somehow moved the stitch (HDC) more towards me so instead of going through the two loops, I was going through the back loop and the one further behind it. It meant I had lines all around the outside of the hat. From then, without realising I was doing it wrong, I made the hat I called The Happy Accident. I was going to do an accompanying video tutorial when I came to a screeching halt when I realised I'd been working the HDC completely wrong. I had to go back re-learn the stitches.
