Marty’s best skill in his teachings, for me, is I never feel like he is talking down to me, juts explaining and encouraging. I like that. He’s definitely an optimist for what he can do for us amateurs just wanting to play some new songs and get better. I find that his encouragement opens the door for more creativity.

Marty is the reason I play guitar as well as I do. I don't know how far I would have gotten musically without his videos early on in my journey. I mean, I was always ambitious, but learning guitar completely on my own would have been rather difficult. I appreciate the heck out of Marty Schwartz.

My favorite pick-in-guitar moment is that picture of John Lennon when the Beatles were in India, holding his guitar over his head upside down and looking in the soundhole. I figure that just means losing your pick in your guitar puts you in good company.

It is really cool how you two and Rick Beato, and others, have found a way to make a living with music without having to subjugate to the soul-sucking music industry and you are helping to save the medium and inspire young musicians. For me, your engaging personalities and love of music is just so much fun, I am going to pick up my guitar and just play, like right now. Interesting thoughts on gripping the pick. I’m going to try the three finger idea. Thank you both!

I have worked through a lot of Marty’s videos. I have worked through a lot of Tony Polecastro’s finger picking and flat picking warm ups and songs. I have had shred lessons with Mrs. Smith - which then took my guitar journey to a whole new level... Because I love both styles, I am trying to learn Hybrid picking, now. Hybrid picking gives me most of what I can do in finger picking PLUS everything I can do/learn with flat picking (and economy picking, 3 notes per string, etc).

I started out using a pick in 1963 , shortly after I included finger picking. I like both. Then since I could still basically do both what I did was use a flat pick and my fingers which over time became my thumb against the index the top of the index nail becomes the pick.
@wheezyjefferson91365 жыл бұрын
Great to see two of my favorites together! For the life of me, I cant use a pick, I use the back of my index fingernail. I keep trying picks and fingerpicking, maybe some day. I've only played 3 years.

I love fingerpicking. I tried to do the pluck-trum pick many times over the many years. But fingers is it for me.. I am more of a strummer anyways and i do not do much solo picking so the fingers work for me. Yea I can always work on getting better and work on weaknesses and so on. But for what I do I am finger style and can put the thumb and finger picks if I needed to do so. Or maybe just the thumb pick. I was taught by my dad when i was little and he played mostly acoustic guitar and ukulele but he had a electric too. i inherited all of his musical stuff when he passed asway. Playing with my fingers is so organic for me. No losing your pick or having to buy a pick. With the fingers you are ready to go right away.
@visitur49144 жыл бұрын
"To get better at something, you have to not avoid it." I'm going to keep that in mind. I'm very much to Mary's side: I naturally gravitate to fingerpicking. Still, I try to at least pick up a plectrum every day, so it doesn't become this crazy, weird, uncomfortable thing that I never do.
@MelGattis4 жыл бұрын

I recommend a small pick like a Jazz III, the standard size pick is way too big and gets in the way of pinch harmonics (for me anyway).

I've been playing guitar using my index finger nail for 40 yrs now. It feels so unnatural to play with a pick, but I want to start using a pick, especially for alternate/hybrid picking. I think my reason for not using a pick was to keep a low volume on my strumming as I practiced. It's great to see you both together. Great info.

Haven't gotten to the end of the vid yet .. but I hope they cover hybrid picking, where you use a plectrum to pick but still use your free fingers to do arpeggios etc. Then you have the volume as well as the versatility. To me, the correct answer to this plectrum or finger argument is you can do BOTH at the same time. Most things in life aren't actually either/or. Loved this video and appreciate the heck out of both of you.
