If I remember correctly, the song was written to criticize people sending their "thoughts and prayers" whenever there is some kind of tragic event, but then never doing anything beyond that

So, for any fellow nerds out there: The ancient Egyptians believed that the heart held all the good and evil someone had committed in their life, therefore was needed to determine their after life. So, when someone died their heart would be weighed on a scale in comparison to the feather of Maat (goddess of truth and justice). If your heart was lighter than the feather then you were allowed into the after life. If your heart was heavier than the feather you'd be eaten by Ammut/Ammit, the "gobbler" beast. A heavy heart was considered wicked and corrupt while a light was considered pure and wholesome. Another point is the term "thoughts and prayers" is typically applied to a completely preventable tragedy after the fact. Typically the solution is so simple, yet inconvenient to someone/a group that throws a big enough fit to get their way. Not saying everyone who uses the term is ill intentioned, but it's often the only response to a tragedy (instead of actually solving the problem) I thought the two themes combined present am interesting message. The whole idea that you wish someone well, while completely ignoring the actual gravity of a situation. Simply because you're not the one suffering. Or better/worse yet, the one benefitting from the suffering. I think the way MIW portrayed that was pretty nifty. Another amazing track for me to use to vent my religious trauma. Just a theory btw, if you have anything to add, or I missed something about the Egyptians, feel free to share.

Yes! You saw and noticed the same religious aspects to Egyptian beliefs as I did and the correlation between the weighing of the heart and feather. Mythology and religious beliefs have always fascinated me. And then the association you placed too with the generic response of "thoughts and prayers" and how bland of a response it really is in such traumatic situations that we see it used in. Seems to be such a generic thing to say to make people feel as if they are doing something beneficial in a time of sadness and or tragedy when in reality they are honestly doing nothing. And realistically. Are they even really thinking and praying? It seems so blasé.

@@jennyjo798 same. The term thoughts and prayers always felt lazy to me. Like "oh, I know this horrible thing has happened and it was totally preventable. So I'm just gonna say that this tragedy weighs heavy on my heart, meanwhile not doing anything to help." Kind of deal. I loved the correlations between the two.

Sorry to hear about the "religious trauma", I hope someone you know has set a better example for Christianity as a whole. It's unfortunate how something as powerful and intimate as prayer has been treated like a throw-away phrase for people to use to not act on on-going violence. While I don't have all the answers to everything that goes on, God loves His people and I hope everyone here knows that they're loved! ❤️

The reason they're pulling their hearts out is because they are performing The Weighing of The Heart. Ancient Egyptians believed that your heart was weighed by Osiris and Anubis after death to determine if you were worthy of going to the afterlife or not
