I'm giving myself one more month of gray growth, then I'll cut inyo a small afro (4 months in total) . It looks a bit of a mess now, but it's temporary. I started hating dying my hair, and I took out the color and then just threw everything in the trash! Going grey will be my birthday present to myself!

After chemo my hair came in thick, white and beautiful. Unfortunately I let my hairstylist talk me into colouring my hair. Fifteen years later I have decided to let my hair go back to my natural white/gray hair. My current hairstylist is on board with me and will help me transition into my natural hair. Yes I do have a definite demarcation but I don’t care. I am so looking forward to completing the transaction. Good luck to you.

I recommend you use this moment because it takes a long time to grow your hair back to where it was. Years ago, it took me over 2 years. Then when I got divorced my friend/stylist talked me into coloring it again so I would be more attractive to men at 58 years old. Ugh. What a dumb reason. I really regret coloring it again because I am starting to go natural now, after 10 years and it’s going to take another 2 years. Ugh.

Hi Beth just came across your video. You are beautiful! I'm in my 4th year and would never go back to the hair dye. I get so many compliments especially from complete strangers to include men. Who knew that they would even notice. My husband and family were very supportive. I believe that going gray, silver, white shows confidence and that's what men like. I never received compliments when I was dyeing my hair. I feel that the dye was like an old carpet covering hard wood floors. God bless you and keep up the great videos.

This is one of my favorite "going gray" videos!:) Thanks for the wise, truthful advice. (Your hair is beautiful!) I'm in "Month 9" of going gray. My hair is almost shoulder length. I, too, have been going "cold turkey". I haven't gotten it cut very short. You're right - the transition isn't EASY to go through. There are days I've looked in the mirror and thought "what am I doing? I feel so old". And it's true - you just don't know what your natural color is until it's grown out! Give it time. I'm 53, and I have a lot of white, mixed w/ some streaks of salt & pepper. I've recently realized - I think i'm going to love this!

Oh my gosh! I also started going gray in my early twenties and started coloring my hair. But as I got older, the grays were more prominent and I was coloring my hair more often. I finally couldn’t take the line of demarcation at my part any more....my hair would look great except for that telltale white line. I think I was in my forties when I quit cold turkey and cut my hair really short. I’ll be 59 this year and my hair is collar length, gray and curly too! I can honestly say I love my hair now! Great video Beth! Thanks for sharing! 😘👍🏼

OGLYASDI - similar story to mine! I started getting white hair when I was 15. Colored it in my 20’s - 40’s dark brunette to hide the white. When I turned 50 I realized I was coloring my roots every 2 weeks which was expensive and probably not healthy. So started transitioning to blonde. For the past 8 years I’ve been getting highlights and lowlights to attain the wheat blonde. The past 1.5 years my stylist was blending in the large portions of white with the foils. I had my last color in March 2019. I have used purple shampoo a few times a week to keep my shoulder-length hair bright without any brassiness or yellow tones. Last week a woman commented on how pretty my hair looks.

Hi Beth! I'm 57 and almost 6 months into my transition. This is the second time watching this video for me. It's nice to have a reminder as the months go on. In the beginning I was so desperate for my hair to grow. I kept obsessing over it and looking in the mirror. Now I've relaxed a bit and am actually enjoying the journey. I even caught a glimpse of my hair (pulled back) in the car mirror and appreciated the contrast of my S&P against my fading dye. I can't say I loved it but I like where I'm heading. I don't think a pixie is in future for me but I'll probably do a shorter funky cut at say the 12 month mark. Thanks again for making the videos.

I have so few white hair yet, but the first ones I saw on me made my heart beat so strong! I was so glad I've made it! I've stop dying my hair about a year ago because I couldn't bear it anymore, neither could my poor and thin hair. It's been years fighting major and very, very severe depression, several hospitalizations, strong medicines that made my hair even thinner than it is already. I was so near to death for so many times... I've gained a lot of weight in such a short period of time because of the treatment I couldn't recognize myself, lost all of my clothes all of a sudden, and couldn't stand look at myself in the mirror. The times when I was worst, I didn't want to live at all. The better times, i didn't care to live, nor how I was, nor anything. Those last two months, though, the medicines have changed again, for the zillionth time, and I felt some improvements in my feelings. Then I looked at me at the mirror for the first time in months. I was just there, standing, seeing that half dyed hair, very thin, shapeless, full of baby hair and broken hair. I saw my very pale skin, dark circles, very rounded face (I used to be very slim before), prominent belly, you know? Everything had changed so much! Wrinkles around my eyes too. It felt to me the change was from one day to another. And then I saw. I saw that little white baby hair right on the front. And then I've realized there were a few others. Do you understand what I mean? I was getting older (I'm 35), I've survived this all and I even have gray beautiful hair!!!! And those wrinkles, marks of my fights, they were like prizes, not like these loose of youth like people say. I'm Brazilian, and Brazilian women are very careful about their looks, there are soooooo many beautiful women, and they make a lot of procedures to stay young as far as they can. But suddenly I've realized I was not one of them. Suddenly I've realized I wanted more than anything to enjoy my process of getting older, feeling the change of my skin, anxious about seeing my hair grayer soon, accepting and taking care of my body and how I am today. I'm sorry the long story. I truly understand everyone's different, that's beautiful and important. But sometimes I feel sad about the women that will never feel the freedom of being who they really are, embracing that, taking real care of that. For me, it means I've made it. And I'm making every single day. I'm really happy about it, and happiness is something I haven't felt for so long.... I'm really glad you're in this path too, and to know there are a lot of women doing that too. It's more than just have gray hair. It's about a kind of value we share. I loved your video and you look amazing in this gray beautiful tone! 😘

Love your video, and your sharing of your experience. I am 65 years old, and have dyed my hair for over 30 years. We were on a RV road trip for 3 months, and 1/2 way through, I HAD to touch up my roots. I had been toying with the idea of stopping the madness for a couple of years, but a special event would come up, and nope. My husband said to take this opportunity to stop dyeing, but I couldn't. Bought the dye, did it in the rv park restroom (because we didn't want the dye running down RV drain tubes into the tank. While in the process, I was so embarrassed as women came in. So, after that moment, Sept. 13 2018, I was done. And I stuck with it. I am going cold turkey also, and boy, it has it's challenges. My hair was long, just above my bra line. When we returned home, I had 4 inches trimmed off, just touching my shoulders. Next cut in 6 weeks, I am going for a shorter bob, about an inch below the front of my jaw. My hair grew like crazy the first 3 months, and has seemed to slow down. I have blorange near my gray, and auburn brown at the ends. I always say, it's like a box of chocolates; you never know what you are going to get. And, I am glad I adopted that mantra, because it seems to change all the time. Your hair is beautiful, and I will look for that facebook page. Thank you! Priscilla

Love this video! I have been toying with this idea and researching through these videos! I am starting now. I am a hairdresser and a color educator for a haircolor company, so this will be interesting. I have had grey/white hair since I was a teen. I love how women look with natural grey hair. You are beautiful. Thank you for this video, so well done.

Amy Schubach I love that you are in that industry and you are contemplating going natural. I think it is so crucial for women to know they have options. Like I said in my video, I am not against hair dye whatsoever but there are so many of us that are tired of it and want to know what our options are… Good luck with your decisions!

I will be 49 this spring. I've had lots of 'silver' for many years and have constantly coloured. Always feeling self-conscious about my greys and worried about appearing older than I am by letting myself go grey. I am honestly so done with colouring and I only do it b/c I begin to freak out about how much silver I have at such a 'young' age. I want to be brave and stop colouring. It's been 7 months since I've been to my salon due to CoVID lockdowns so I have some pretty serious silver at this point!. I'm like, well, it's been 7 months (and likely 8 before I get in) so why don't I just go with it? And then I get scared again!!! I love this video in terms of your authenticity and talk of self-confidence. You are gorgeous with silver at your age. So why can't I just 'let go'?

I’ve just started on the long process to growing my natural hair out from bottle black. I’m about 5 weeks in I think. I’ve got a lot of silvers, but also I think my natural mousey brown will still feature too. More of a cinnamon and sugar rather than a salt and pepper lol. But as I haven’t seen my natural hair colour in 25years, let alone seen it with the silvers in, I’m sure it’ll be different to hope I imagine it as it grows. I estimate it will take my approximately 4-5 years to grow my hair out as I refuse to cut it above my shoulders. I’m looking forward to the journey as I already have the time, now I’m just putting it to good use! Plus I’m extra lucky that I’m employed care for my grandparents 24/7 365, so I don’t have to worry about looking professional in the workplace. I’ve got the freedom to go completely cold turkey and not face any issues in the workplace.

So helpful! I just decided to grow out my hair today. Cold turkey. Wish I could get a cut but not with the self quarantine situation. My hair stylist always tells me not to grow out my color cause it will "add 10 years to you" but I'm ready. I can't wait to see what the color will be. I hope it's a pretty silver and not too white.
@BethTessier4 жыл бұрын
Linda Romanowski That’s a typical thing that stylists say. You have to remember that you are no longer going to them for a service that generates income for them… They are very incorrect in saying that women look older with their gray hair. Personally I think women look softer and more their age when they have their natural colored hair. My hairdresser was shocked at how soft and beautiful my hair was and how it looked against my skin. You have to do what feels right to you!

Thank you Beth. I have just made the decision to let my natural hair colour start to show through. I will be 55 next month and I have been fighting my gray hair all my life. I was born with jet black hair with a large patch of gray at the back. I have always had to have the 'runway streak' dyed every 4 weeks. It has not been an easy decision to make but I feel now is the time and your journey has shown me it is possible. If I can look and feel even half as good as you do in a year or so, I will be very happy. Thank you for suggesting the fb group, I have already sent a request to join. Thank you for the inspiration.

Wonderful video!!! Beth, you are so beautiful and likable. My problem is different. I'm 77 and stopped dying my hair.......BUT! it's mostly dark, dark, dark brown. White, silver, or gray is flattering......but this dark hair with my older face??? I'm hoping for more silver one of these days. However...I'm determined to be the authentic ME, and that includes no more (toxic) chemicals on my head, and just let the chips fall where they may. I never hear of other older ladies like me with hair being much darker than their dyed hair. Thank goodness for baseball caps!!! Thank you again, for sharing your story and journey. Your support is so valuable to to many. Love from San Diego, CA.

Ginny Lorenz Thank you so much for your sweet comments! Yes that is a different sort of problem isn’t it! I know my sister who is 60 years old had this issue as well. The older she got the darker her hair got. She did continue to highlight hers, but that is definitely a personal choice!

I am 11 months in transitioning. If I had only one thing to say and that I say to everybody : you cannot judge the end result until you go all the way. I decided to go cold turkey. Obviously, that way is testing our patience and determination. It is hard to deal with the demarcation. Horrible. For me, the best way to make it sustainable is to wear my hair in a ponytail. That way, when people look at my face they see gray... with a dark brown ponytail sideways. I can't wait to cut the dye part but it won't be until the 18 months mark because I want it to be a certain Bob hairstyle - chin lenght. So, 7 more months to go. I can do this! Wearing it in a ponytail makes it very much sustainable. Thank you for sharing your journey, you are part of my support team :-)

Kathryn Wilson haha! Love it! 👏🏻👏🏻 One of my biggest soapboxes is that our culture has taught women to dye their hair the second they see gray so we don’t actually know and understand that gray hair does not equal elderly… Women of all ages get gray hair… It is simply a change in hair pigment. I was in my 20s when I started getting gray hair… Brunettes tend to gray sooner than other hair colors… This doesn’t mean I am “old“ it just means my hair pigment is changing. But because our culture has taught women to dye their hair we don’t realize that young women do in fact go gray.. *steps down off of soap box*

I’m 54and have decided to stop dyeing my hair. I’ve been doing it since I was 26! I’m tired of spending the money, time, and of all the chemicals. I was diagnosed with RA 5 years ago and have spent the last 3 years getting healthy by eating well (going WFPB), exercising, learning g to de stress, and looking for alternative ways to manage my symptoms and it occurred to me this summer, that I was putting horrible chemicals on my hair every 2 weeks!!! I’m not going to lie - I’m very nervous. I’ve always worn makeup, jewelry, cute outfits, latest hairstyles etc so this will be a challenge. Your video is so inspiring and I hope my hair looks as fantastic as yours does once I grow it out. I’m starting off with shorter hair and don’t have any issue cutting it shorter so that might make it easier 🙏🏻. Thanks for the tip about the Facebook group - I’ve already asked to join.
