My 2017 Shelby GT350 had a blown engine with only 8,400 miles. I had just finished a ton of prep on my GT350 to prepare for my first big day out at the track. After completing the final step, on my way home with my buddy Scott the engine decided to let go from what I'm hearing is likely a spun bearing. This is becoming a more apparent/common issue with this cars and I would be scared to own one of these cars out of warranty.
Fast Forward, I got a Voodoo Gen II motor, but in this video I discuss the problems that we've already had to address. I'll also be discussing whether or not I plan to keep the car moving forward or not.

I have to admit Jeff, while I've had zero issues with my 2017 GT-350, done multiple HPDE days with no issues, your experience gives me pause to push her hard. I am at 10k miles, love this car sooo much. It really is such an incredible car to drive, lots of fun, and no problem keeping up with the $200K cars at the track, with the right driver, but man, I'd not want to go through what you have, just not worth it to me.

Do you have any oil consumption issues with yours? You nailed it though, car is insane value for the price (when it works) running with GT3s and cars 3-4x the price. I would run it hard if you don’t have any engine mods and use the powertrain warranty as a safety net.

@@JeffAshton Hey Jeff, no, only use about 1 quart between oil changes, if that. I am really happy about that! I have the MGW shifter, carbon fiber drive shaft, and some aftermarket P51 wheels and SP4 tires in the GT350R sizes, that's all my mods.

Congrats Jeff on your baby son! Although I have not driven a Mustang 350, would love to do so, I think a 350R for track would be great, but a bit concerned about the engine issues though, hope Ford sorts them out! Being a track junkie my self, love to see a comparo of the 350 vs. M2 on track. As you mentioned, 350's are meant for track purposes, but is Ford ok with these being put through the ringer on track and extending warranty? I've heard some stories on manufactures denying warranty if its been out on a track, even though they were built for it. Insurance for sure..

Dang Jeff!!! I definitely appreciate you for being VERY honest and transparent with your experience with you GT-350’s. I could imagine how difficult that could be, especially as a Ford/car guy. But for me, this is heart wrenching because I too love the GT-350 and I want to get one however, with ALL of the issues that owners are having, it makes me nervous. It would be even worse for me because I am not a technical car guy. I do not know much about the inner workings of a car to be able to diagnose it and even repair it on my own. So to potentially have these issues would be far more traumatic for me. But with that said, I may have to pass on the GT-350, which sucks. It was one of my dream cars since it came out in 2015.

Hi Jeff. I have a question for you. Since you now have the Gen II motor, are there any particular markings on the engine that states this? I know on GT350's sold in 2019 and up have the "K code" sticker under the driver side coil cover. I recently bought a 2017 GT350 and it has had an engine replacement and is supposedly the Gen II motor. I pulled the coil cover off and there is not even a sticker at all. I am wondering if they even put them on there for cars with engine replacements. All I have to go by is the paper work I received stating the motor was replaced in 2019. Let me know your thoughts, and thanks for the informative videos!

Have you received any solid feedback on the shredded a/c belt? I recently had the same problem while on track at Daytona. It shredded and took out the serpentine belt, which then caused overheating. Dealer replaced a/c compressor, accumulator, crank pulley. Also had intermittent starting issue come up so they replaced batter and starter, more as a precaution. All under warranty of course. Overall, the car has been fantastic, definitely hitting above its weight at Sebring, Daytona, Road Atlanta, etc.

Ya brother that's a great peace of mind. It guarantees you that you have a time cushion to work with. It give another five to seven years to decide. Now with that being said, will they honor it. I've heard of more than one person say that not only Ford but some of these other companies won't honor there warranty do to modification or accusations of abusive driving. But for the most part, it's a good step forward, only time will tell. Keep us posted, we need more honest people like yourself to give us the real scoop on what's going on. To be all honest brother, the reason we need to know is the question if we should go out and buy a brand new car or should we by used because paying to maintain it is going to cost the same out of pocket.

Im sorry you had to go through this man. One thing i noticed you said that really stuck out to me and i know it wouldnt be the source of all your issues but several Ford techs have told me, DO NOT change out the break in oil before 3000 to 5000 miles. You said you changed yours after 1000 i believe. Ive seen this with a lot of enthusiast who want to take care of their cars and be vigilant on oil changes but changing out that break in oil so quick doesn't allow the piston rings to set properly and could lead to issues. Just what ive been told. Hope you have better luck with this engine.

Jeff Ashton Jeff Ashton my man! Appreciate you sharing your insights and experience. I’m on day 57 since the car has been in the shop to get the engine replaced. As soon as I heard it only took you two weeks to get the engine replaced, I knew I needed to call a rep. I’m going to raise hell and see if I can get somewhat compensated for the time it’s been sitting at the dealership. Also congrats on the baby son!!!

Terry in your case, I would push for a replacement vehicle and wouldn’t settle for anything else. The fact that your car is a 2020 with only 1,366 miles AND 50+ days without a resolution is unbelievable.

@@eatingleftnotright8971 common sense when your constantly slingn a motor 6g-8g is going to use oil. Solution : check and fill oil. Start with that. I personally don't run any oil lower than 15-whatever, consumes alot less oil. When you smell antifreeze pop the hood and look, before it starts to run hot. There ya go there's some free comon sense for ya , on the house.

Joe Nobody Every car uses different oil weight for a reason.. thicker doesn’t mean better when tracking a car, just saying. Take for example the ZL1 1LE when tracking, it recommends 15w-50 but for the ZL1 it recommends 0w-40 for track. Why? Because the 1LE pulls a lot higher Gs in a corner so it makes sense to keep the oil thicker. It also makes sense to allow it to get warmer at a slower rate due to the amount of heat being generated with sticker tires. Heat radiation to be exact. GT350 uses and calls for 5w-50, why? Tolerances are much tighter in an engine that runs up to 8k rpms. Plenty of documented cases of GT350s tracking a full day without any oil burned. Will it burn over time? Yes, and I’m sure people who track their cars maintain it way better than those who don’t. Enjoy the free piece of information you didn’t know. On the house.

I have beaten on that motor fot 106k miles with Pennzoil ultra platinum 5w30 and it runs like a raped ape. Put on a vmp triple pass heat exchanger and Fluidyne radiator, and heat soak all but gone. Best car i ever had. Eaton trutrac rearend, mgw shifter 82mm pulley, vmp tune. Car launches like a monster. Fantastic engine. I mean how many stock engines can go 180k miles with 600plus wheel. I test drove a 2016 GT350 today w 5K miles, the car is mint drove beautiful sounded great. I live in MI. And I had the hood up when the car was started and the motor was whisper quiet I think it would be a great buy but I am having reservations after hearing these issues. I think I may buy it if I can get it for 39K they are asking 43K. I asked if they had an oil analysis performed on it and they acted like they never herd of any motor problems on these cars. They gave me a car fax and it did show it has an outstanding recall for high oil consumption 17L103 I believe is the recall code. If I can get Ford to give an extended warranty I think I may take the gamble. What do you think? It does have the track package as well. Thanks

The Cappy thnx for the heads up. Bought it new in Sept ‘19 - was built June ‘19. No oil consumption in 3,500 miles - guess I got lucky. I read the tsb. Kinda sucks that you could blow thru a quart during the test period - yet Ford could tell you that’s normal. Not appropriate when you’re paying big bucks for a new vehicle that shouldn’t be consuming any measurable amount of oil between changes. Good luck with your issues.
