Its heartbreaking seeing how being reunited with Shadow Weaver is pushing Adora and Catra back into their unhealthy mindsets, with Adora willing to sacrifice herself for the cause and not see her future beyond being helpful to others, and Catra thinking SW is going to hurt her again and Adora will keep choosing SW over her not their life together. Catra and adoras trauma is so interesting because on the one hand you have catra - its hard to miss the way her trauma has shaped her - and on the other hand theres adora whos trauma is so subtle that you could even miss it even until this episode! Adora very much has a hero complex, she feels she has to be the one to save everyone, which given that shes a Chosen One, sounds perfectly reasonable. Its not until she loses the sword that we start to see how she doesnt let this mentality go, because it predates the sword even. Catra has known adora her entire life and she knows that adoras self sacrificing nature has nothing to do with she ra. They showed you back in Promise - shadow weaver tortures catra in front of her and tells her it was her duty to keep catra under control. She tells her that it is her fault if the people she loves gets hurt. So of course adora will sacrifice herself. Theres never another option with her.

Probably the most controversial comment I've ever done on this channel, but here goes. It's so interesting how Adora, on one hand, is crying and wanting Catra to come back; and on the other hand, says 'saving the world' is her biggest want. I see a lot of people hating Catra for her decision to run. Not to say it's the _best_ decision possible but I would say it was an attempt to break Adora out of this mentality that her desires are less important than everyone else's. Remember Save the Cat? That's when Adora broke out of it for the first time. She was able to transform into HER She-ra. But now Shadow Weaver is between her and Catra, again exercising control. Both Adora and Catra's trauma is directly linked with Shadow Weaver. Adora goes back to her extreme self-sacrificing tendencies, Catra goes back to her mentality that Adora can't choose her. But that's what trauma figures do. Does this mean Catradora is unhealthy at this point? A little bit. But it would be _pretty_ unrealistic if they managed to sit down and talk like adults right now. We would like it, but that's just not how human psychology works. SPOILERS FOR FINALE AHEAD One thing that most people who say 'Catradora is toxic' forget is that a relationship has very little chances of being healthy if a major trauma figure is intervening. But that doesn't mean that their relationship doesn't get healthier. When Shadow Weaver dies, it is quite literally Adora and Catra being free from their trauma. Adora can finally embrace herself and her desires. Catra can finally realize how much Adora wants her. In summary, this show is in no way a portrayal of a perfectly healthy relationship. Even in the end, they have some codependency to sort out. But in my opinion, the finale makes it clear that their relationship is only going to improve, and is also in no way 'toxic' even as it is. Edit: Kudos to anyone who reads this massive comment lol

i hope this isn’t controversial at all and most people think like this lol !! i feel like it’s a given that once it’s all over they finally have a chance to breath and relax and talk about things going forward. i can’t imagine how that would feel to do that with someone you’ve loved for so long, but have also spent your whole life with them basically living in an environment that was inevitably going to drive you apart.
@FigurativeCritter8 ай бұрын
I agree! I also think a big part of Catra leaving in this episode is because she can't bear to watch Adora hurt herself for the sake of others anymore. She knows that she can't stop Adora from doing that, especially with Shadow Weaver pushing her into that mindset even further, but she also doesn't have to stay to watch it happen and put herself through that pain again.
@luk_mrf7 ай бұрын
@@S0LAVELLANHELL unfortunately... no. Most of the people who had watched the show doesn't even undestand half of the psychology of it. i've seen so much people HATING Catra as a character or saying "i shipp Glimmer and Adora because Catradora is bullshit".. it's sad but, 60% of the spectators didn't fully understand their relationship, the universe and the human psychology portraid in She Ra :(
@EmberQuill6 ай бұрын
I feel like most of the people I've watched react to this show would agree with you and it's not really a very hot take. Although admittedly there's probably some bias given the kinds of reaction channels I watch. Some had trouble finding sympathy for her during season 4 (even though her arc during the season was one long cry for help) but came around after she hit rock bottom in the finale and started bonding with Glimmer in season 5. And regardless of anyone's feelings about Catra herself, I think everyone can agree that Shadow Weaver ruined everything she touched and only ever made things worse.
@omegastar198 ай бұрын
One argument concerning Shadow Weaver pushing for Adora to take the Failsafe that gets thrown around a lot, is that it is the logical thing to do - She-Ra is the only being capable of surviving, therefore Adora should take it. There are two problems with this argument. The first problem is that the logic breaks when Adora cannot transform into She-Ra. And you cannot just 'assume' that Adora will figure it out by the time it happens without using meta-information. From a writing PoV of course Adora will end up transforming into She-Ra at the last second, but that is irrelevant to the situation that Adora finds herself in at the Failsafe. Because at that moment in time, Adora cannot transform when she wants to, it is out of her control, and therefore she cannot expect to survive using the Failsafe. From the PoV of the situation Adora is in when she takes the Failsafe, **she is going to die**. The second problem with the aforementioned argument is that logic does not necessarily provide the best answer. To illustrate this, simply look back at the season 3 finale where Queen Angella sacrificed herself. Queen Angella specifically sacrificed herself so that Adora wouldn't have to. From a logical standpoint this makes sense because Adora, being She-Ra, is more important than Queen Angella. But that is not why Queen Angella sacrifices herself. She sacrifices herself **because it is the right thing to do**. Angella is the adult in the room, so to speak, and she is a good person. Compassionate, selfless...it makes complete sense therefore that Angella is the one who sacrifices herself - not to save She-Ra so that She-Ra can win the war, but to save Adora so that Adora may live. And from that point of view, at the Failsafe the person who *should* be sacrificing herself is Shadow Weaver. Does Shadow Weaver not love Adora? Does she not care about Adora? She is supposed to, she raised Adora has her own child for goodness sake. If Shadow Weaver was a good person/good mother, she should be stepping up immediately to just take the Failsafe. The fact that she doesn't do this doesn't make Adora's choice to take the Failsafe the right choice. Because if Shadow Weaver refuses to do it....why can't any of the other people in the room do it? And sure, they will die, but so will Adora if she cannot transform, and in that moment in time that is the most likely outcome. So why should Adora **once again** be the one to make the sacrifice? Let someone else do it for once.
@FigurativeCritter8 ай бұрын
And it's so clear that the only people in the room who are actually willing to risk Adora's life, to let her accept the failsafe, are Shadow Weaver, who doesn't care about an individual life if it's to save thousands (until that individual life is her own of course), and Adora herself, who's been conditioned by SW her whole life to think that her value comes from her service to others. No one else was willing to risk it, they all would have preferred to find another way. If the fight hadn't broken out maybe they could have convinced Adora to look for a different solution.

@@darquidarqui One of my favorite episodes for sure! The Catradora scenes, the intense fights, AND showing how much Shadow Weaver’s manipulative and abusive tactics still effects Adora and Catra is amazing writing and storytelling!

I love this episode so much. My favorite moments are the Catra Adora fight/talk near the end, and how Adora stood up to Shadowweaver at the end. And of course when Catra saw through SW’s bs and said “so you do it then”. So good! And of course since Adora doesn’t care about her own life she just accepts to possibly die. I also love when Catra said “it doesn’t always have to be you” because that’s exactly Adora’s problem. I really liked the fight, especially Micah, he was fighting with one arm behind his back, like it was nothing! Oof and then Catras reaction when she saw the failsafe on Adora 😭 Now to the Catra Adora fight / talk. I’m more on Catra’s side. I think this episode is when she truly understood how this behavior / thinking harms Adora. “Why do you always have to sacrifice everything for everyone else? When do you get to choose? What do you want Adora?” And she’s crying while she asks that. And Adora doesn’t even know what to answer, because she doesn’t even know. Adora standing up to SW at the end is my favorite Adora moment. I’m so proud of her. I love her arc. She is a chosen one that’s always ready to sacrifice herself. And this show goes but is that a good thing? How does it affect her and the people around her? What about her life?

Those are just so powerful dialogue moments, freaking love how they make your heart race when they happen! Yes, even thought they were both doing mistakes and were in a bad place mentally at this time, Adora truly needed to hear that from Catra. Yessss, so terrifyingly badass, low-key wished for just a few more Micah scenes under the hive mind hehe So powerful 💔 Yes, I agree actually, even if Catra was leaving, Adora needed to hear this one way or another, and it's even more powerful and important in the next ep when she sees every version of Catra before her very eyes, because Catra is the answer herself. So good. One of the most satisfying moments ever! All the freaking show to get to that moment from Adora, made me love her even more, flaws and all shown through the ep. Gosh I love this show so much!

catra and adora are so relatable in this episode. :( hugs all around. for adora's self-sacrifice: she was only ever valued for her accomplishments and perfection. through the whole series, she demonstrates an unhealthy lack of self-esteem (she feels she has to DO something - e.g. BE she-ra - to be valued) and an obsession with serving that perfectionistic purpose, which would both feed into this unnecessary need to sacrifice herself for a greater good without fully exploring every option. sacrificing herself would, of course, be the absolute, ultimate, perfect, "accomplishing something big for someone other than herself" moment. for catra's leaving: the poor girl never felt unconditional love until adora came along. even then, every adult in catra's life effectively neglected and/or abandoned her. this would leave anyone with unhealthy attachment issues. it's hard to expect that catra would do something other than pre-emptively abandon adora if catra suspected she'd ever be abandoned by the one person who'd ever shown her that unconditional love IF she had what she thought was tangible evidence (e.g.: adora's self-sacrifice... even if it had nothing to do with catra herself). it's a chaotic and relatable way to show how two very fleshed out characters / people can have periods of total dissonance: both characters acting with necessary (even critical) purpose - in alignment with their personal values - despite personal values being unhealthy and detrimental to a shared relationship.
@darquidarqui7 ай бұрын
First of all, thank you so much for your kind works! Super appreciate it 😄❤️ And yes, your description of both Adora and Catra is totally on point, love how much this dissonance was so well developed in their own storylines even throughout season 4 where they're most apart from each other, and that atmosphere of dread and despair from season 4 is felt once again in this ep. Love it love it!

Usually when I watch this sort of content, I'm doing something on my other monitor, playing a game or looking at chats or something, but with your stuff, it demands 100% of my attention, all the time. I'm not surprised it takes you a long time to make these, because the editing is the most elaborate and detailed I've ever seen - you've got like an entire second video running in parallel that's just made up of all the editing details. So yeah, thanks so much for doing this. As for the episode? Like you said, it's kind of crazy to compare this to Season 1's Mystacor episode, not just for the setting, but also for Casta's character. damn this episode is a rollercoaster of emotions. mostly anger, frustration and ANXIETY lol. Here we see Adora's completely broken self-worth and sense of self at its best. She really thinks her only worth is dependent on what she gives and does for others. "The world needs you as Shera, not Adora". That's what she's been hearing her whole life, that who she is and what she wants doesn't actually matter, because she has a bigger "purpose" that she needs to accomplish. Catra's question ("When do you get to choose? What do you want, Adora?") is so impactful and it shakes her to her core, because Adora has never paused to reflect on what she actually wants, she is so detached from her own feelings. That's why she was so quick to turn against Catra at the beginning of the show. She just doesn't pause to process her emotions and her desires, she just embraces the roles she's given, her new purposes, because that's the only way she'll be of worth, in her mind. What she actually wants doesn't matter, so she never thinks about it. That's what she's been taught. And it's so heartbreaking. It makes so much sense tho that Catra is the only one that's able to point that out in that moment and she tries to stop her. Catra is one of the only choices Adora ever made. Despite Shadow Weaver's disapproval of their friendship since they were kids, Adora still CHOSE to be friends with Catra. Catra is the only one who's been able to know Adora's "true self", outside of all the fake roles and purposes they tried to force upon her (from Shadow Weaver's best Force Captain to Shera). So it hurts Catra so much more to see Adora sacrifice her real self in favour of "the greater good". For Catra, a world where everyone except Adora survives is much worse than the end of the universe. Catra can't stand to watch it. She feels betrayed all over again, because Adora is still so willing to do what shadow weaver wants of her, despite Catra's pleads. She feels like she's still not enough for Adora to choose her above anything else. Then of course Shadow Weaver is able to exploit all their weaknesses however she needs. She knows exactly what buttons to push, because she's the one who created those buttons in the first place. what Adora says to her at the end is an INCREDIBLE step for Adora. she stands up for catra and herself against their abuser and calls her out. she's not afraid of her anymore. she claims she won't be controlled by her again. but it doesn't really matter, because the outcome is still exactly the one shadow weaver wanted: catra and adora are separated and adora is willing to sacrifice herself to save etheria. tragic, isn't it? Also, I particularly hate how SW tries to humiliate and degrade Catra at every opportunity. She even tries to blame Adora's inability to transform on Catra, when Catra is literally the reason Shera came back in the first place! She's causing even more doubt and confusion in Adora's mind. But it's nice to see how Adora is more willing to defend Catra now. And Shadow Weaver absolutely hates it ahah. She's seething every time Adora and Catra show love towards each other. Like in the scene "Did you just jump into fire for me?", while Adora and Catra are being so cute and goofy, SW is just death glaring at them in the back lol.
@darquidarqui7 ай бұрын
I don't know what to add really, you said it all really beautifully haha thank you so much for this! The tragedy of the relationship between these three is more than evident through this ep, specially that conversation with the fire in the background and Catra eavesdropping. It's the perfect visual summary about how serious the topic of abuse really is and I love how maturely this shows tackles it. Thank you for this!

Shadow Viewer A+parenting skills strike again... I think in her point of view, power is everything and love is an act of weakness which is why she connects Adora's inability to transform into She-Ra with her strong emotional ties with Catra. On the other hand, we saw in previous episodes that She-Ra is powered by love and friendship (words SW can't really comprehend in any day) and Adora is at her strongest when she is around the people she love and trust or when she is trying to protect her loved ones from danger (especially in Save the Cat, her whole transformation without the sword was triggered by the need to save Catra and make Prime pay for what he had done to Catra) so yes Shadow Viewer is manupulating their relationship again with her own twisted view about power. One of the things I really love about this show is that characters, their traumas and emotions are so realistic. Both Adora and Catra endured insecurities, traumas, dangerous missions, wars since their childhood and the only good thing that came out of bad memories is their bond to one another while the root of every bad thing they endured connects with SW. They were triggered by their personal and shared traumas so I understand and love them for showing such humane emotions. The emotional turmoils are very well planned and executed in the show. 4 years have passed since I first saw the episode and your reaction took me back to the first time I saw it. Watching you was like watching the episode with a friend first time all over again. Thank you for all the amazing reactions and reviews, for your notes, words. Waiting for the final episodes❤

This is such a good yet heartbreaking episode on so many levels, and you analyzed them all perfectly! I definitely felt that kind of Chosen One thing there for Adora, where she ends up forced to choose between living for herself or sacrificing it all to fulfill the mission of the mythic hero she has no choice but to be. A situation where you see someone being so completely selfless that it feels selfish to those who love them and feel abandoned, like their love isn't enough. I think that's what made Catra's reaction so understandable to me in a way - that plus Shadoweaver being the absolute piece of manipulative sh*t that she is lol. Anyways as always wonderful reaction (could feel your stress through the screen, hope you've recovered since lmao), amazing editing and commentary, and I can't wait for the ending! 🤘

Idk if this is obvious or not (Catra pretty much pointed it out), but I think Shadow Weaver knew right from that beginning, from even before joining the Horde, about the failsafe and the heart of etheria. as you said, she knows stuff. way too much. She knew all of this for a very long time. There's no way she figured this out after the big reveal of what the heart of etheria is in season 4. As Catra pointed out, she had been there before and as she said herself, she spent her whole life studying the secrets of mystacor, and she could only have done that when she was a teacher in mystacor. She found out that the heart of etheria stored a lot of magical power and the failsafe would grant access to that power, but she wasn't strong enough to get it herself. So she needed someone to do it for her. She first tried with Micah when she found out how powerful he was. She started training him to become more powerful, but it didn't end well. Then she saw Adora, and she knew right away she had incredible power. she knew she was the one that could get to that failsafe. i don't think it's absurd to think SW already knew Adora was Shera from the beginning tbh. So she started training Adora since she was a baby to become her obedient little soldier, who wouldn't question her and would just do what she was told. And when the time came, she would bring her to the heart to get that magic for herself. She basically raised Adora as a sacrificial lamb. That's so f*cked up. And it probably would have worked if Adora hadn't met Catra. I think Catra showed Adora what a genuine connection looked like, how real love felt like, opposed to the fake, conditional one shadow weaver was feeding her. The relationship with Catra made Adora feel more human, not just a weapon, like she had some agency, because she chose to keep catra's friendship despite shadow weaver's blatant disapproval. She learned that she could question and defy what was asked of her (even if some things were harder than others to oppose to). This is also the reason why Shadow Weaver hated Catra so much: she was the only thing standing in her way of getting full control over Adora. So she made sure to create conflict between catra and adora, so that one day they'll eventually split up. except it didn't go as planned, i guess she thought catra was gonna be the one to defect (since she made sure to abuse her all the time) and adora the one to stay (since she manipulated her to be loyal), not the opposite. now she saw another opportunity to get back on her original plan. and for the moment it's working. it's crazy to think about. this story was so perfectly thought out from the beginning, it's amazing.

Fun Fact: The phrase "Friends of Mara" is possibly a reference to the phrase "Friends of Dorothy," itself a reference to "Wizard of Oz." In the 1930s and 40s, people would use "Friends of Dorothy" as a codephrase to signal that they were themselves LGBTQ or were allies of that community. Ex: (approaches a cute guy at the bar) "Hey, you wouldn't happen to be 'friends with Dorothy,' would you?" This was SO pervasive, in fact, that the US Navy spend many years and millions of dollars trying to figure out who this "Dorothy" was, and why she was friends with so many sailors. 😂

I love and hate this whole chapter. The drama is amazing but it really breaks my heart 🥲 Talking about that final scene with Catra and Adora.. I get why Catra is leaving, I get how she must be feeling (and I really appreciate the team behind that made this, because it, once again, shows that the process of becoming a better person is not one straight line forward, it has its ups and downs)., yet at the same time I know that Adora really needed Catra by her side with all what was going on, so I still can't help but feel frustrated at Catra for leaving, even though I believe Adora also needed to be called out
@darquidarqui7 ай бұрын
Same same! It hits hard 💔 Yesss, also appreciate how growth is non-linear and very much complicated when there's an abusive figure present on top of that. Of course it feels frustrating that Catra is leaving, that adds a ton to the pain and injustice. I really really love the writing leading up to this climatic moment between Catra and Adora, it truly feels earned

God this episode! This episode freakin destroys me. From an objective point of view, yes, SW is entirely correct that Adora (as She-Ra) is the only one who could possibly survive carrying the power, and in the grand scheme of course sacrificing the one to save an entire world… yeah… objectively, logically, not wrong. HOWEVER that doesn’t make Catra’s reaction any less valid. This isn’t even Catra truly relapsing. She’s pulling away and going into self preservation but it’s different. She finally sees Adora. She finally sees to the root of what Adora is, why she does what she does. For the first time, she doesn’t blame Adora. “Why do you do sacrifice everything for everyone else? When do you get to choose? What do you want, Adora?” She finally has Adora back in her life, they’re working through some of their issues, they’re growing together. But then… SW does what she always does. She manipulates, she prays, she plants seeds in their minds. Catra is doing everything she can to try and defend, to reason with Adora. But it’s not enough. Because Adora has been raised to believe she’s only as important as her value to others. If she can’t do this, then she may as well not exist. And Catra just wants her to, for once, be selfish. At least admit what she wants. Just say it. But of course, Adora doesn’t. Because her life, happiness, is a small price to pay. And so Catra retreats, because if Adora can’t say it, if she’s just going to die anyway, she’s not going to be there to see it, to watch as the most important person in her life self destructs. She can’t. At least for now. Geez, sorry about this, feel like I wrote a novel. My bad, dude.

Hahaha this is the kind of episode that truly deserves a long comment! It's just so painful to see the realization of Catra's eyes of how deeply manipulated and abused Adora really is and the frustration of the end is just so explosive, so dramatically earned. Love this ep more and more

@darquidarqui7 ай бұрын

I wanted Catra to prove Shadow Weaver wrong, so she could win over her. Catra could have proven Shadow Weaver wrong by staying and supporting Adora by giving her emotional support, but in her attempts to oppose Shadow Weaver’s accusation, she ended up proving her point and making Adora feel lost and upset. *Adora doesn’t want me! Not like I want her.* If Adora didn’t want Catra, then that would be totally valid. I wouldn’t blame her, but alas, she did in the last episode. I mean Catra tried to kill her and her friends, controlling She-Ra for a small bit and wanting her to kill her own friends and laughing about it. And apparently Catra “always loves” Adora the whole time, which never sat right with me and just made me feel so uncomfortable. There is a lot of bad history between them. Yes, I do see and appreciate how Catra herself tried to change and redeem herself.
@darquidarqui7 ай бұрын
I get where you're coming from but it was also very important for Adora to understand where her actions were coming from: what does Adora want? is the lack of a concrete answer that makes Catra so frustrated. And it's very important to remember that the only person Catra could trust as a child is precisely Adora, so when Adora chooses to have the fail-safe, of course Catra is gonna feel betrayed, abandoned and with a feeling of defeat in the sense of Shadow Weaver always winning and getting what she wants. She's always confused by Adora choosing to be the hero, save the day and sacrifice herself and try to be the morally righteous one in the most important moments. Of course Adora has shown affection towards Catra but when she's confronted by the question, there's no real resolve in Adora. Adora began to truly understand herself so much more in Heart, Part 1 when she sees every version of Catra in front of her, even the most villainous ones, because right there she's confronted with the question she couldn't answer before: being with Catra. But of course the ghots of their past return with Shadow Weaver in the picture in this ep and the feeling of having a destiny returns, and it's all a self-destructive cycle. Yes, both Adora and Catra were on a much more positive path before the ending of Return to the Fright Zone just before Shadow Weaver returns, and that's the most crucial element: SW in the picture will always torment both Catra and Adora even when she's not there physically (Adora loses her She-Ra form in the Black Garnet chamber in that episode precisely). The main reason why the ending of this ep happened was because of SW's toxicity and manipulation. Without her, things most probably would've been much more controlled between Catra and Adora.

Sadly Catra leaving really is all on Adora. If she had been honest with Catra and told her she wanted to be together with her too she 100% would have stayed, but no she still has that bad habit of putting everyone else before herself. I mean Adora is basically just asking her to stay to watch her march off to her death.

So Shadow Weaver Is essentially Grima Wormtongue (Weaver and Wormtongue begins with W, coincidence? i think no!) from Lord of the Rings. 😢😢😢 It feels weird, just one more episode (well two) and is over (well I has rewatch this series many times, but always feeld weird. Emotional, satisfactory but also sad. It's like an event that occurs rarelly) Mi inglés ha empeorado mucho, lo siento.

@darquidarqui7 ай бұрын
Thank you! I really do see SW's actions and words as manipulation though, and even if in the end she did one last good thing, that "you're welcome" feels a bit too sinister and dark to me, and it's a contrast to Angella's words when she got trapped in the portal. I can't really label Shadow Weaver as a good person, I'm sorry! But I get where you're coming from, I appreciate the comment!
