As a newer godzilla fan thanks to my wife, i very much loved the movie! It’s a great theatre viewing movie, the perfect amount of cheese and trope to make it silly without being annoying, and i left very happy with the whole thing, having seen all of the movies tied to this one before hand (and just having started with monarch: legacy of monsters!) i was initially not vibing with trapper, he definitely grew on both me and my gf, and we were pleased not to see a full romance between him and the dr at the end, because we felt it was unnecessary (mostly personal taste). I’d say it’s not necessarily a good movie to get INTO the fandom with unless you’re pretty young, but it’s definitely fun and even with my limited knowledge of the lore was great to enjoy. Also tiamat looked SO SO cool. I loved it so much. I saw minus one in theaters with my dad. I cried at the end, it was amazing and emotional and a perfect film in so many ways but it’s not the same as the current line of films, and that’s good. I think it’s an incredible standalone and i think it is an AMAZING film and would tell anyone to see it in the same breath i’d recommend godzilla x kong, wirh the caveat of the huge tonal difference

I hate that most of the negative reviews are mostly comparing it to Minus One. They act as if it's the only Godzilla film that matters. Minus One getting a lot of praise is great, but not if that praise comes at the expense of the rest of the franchise. The sad thing is that this type of discourse is only going to hurt the film's reputation in the long run...

Well, it’s just like Jurassic Park. How do you go from an intelligent, engaging, emotionally charged sci-fi movie with elements of action into a cheap facsimile of itself with every film? We had a gem with Minus One and then took a major step back with the Godzilla series that came out a couple months ago and with this film. We had a chance at creating a really interesting world for these characters, and they said “fuck it, make another Transformers film! Let’s sell some toys!”

I’m with you, man. I had such a great time with this movie, it definitely did a really good job of using Kong as the main character. Some of the small cutaways to his reactions to things are my favorite parts of the movie. And I got a Kong cup topper, I didn’t even know you could get a Scar King one like you had haha. I had a spoiler warning with a few points typed out here about some things you mentioned, but then got to the end of the video where you said “keep it spoiler free” so I’m editing my comment. That’s what I get for not finishing the video before commenting.

Just as there can be many different takes on Batman, there can be many different takes on Godzilla. I love Batman TAS. It was a serious take that I can watch over and over. I also love Brave & the Bold, it is just so much Fun! Minus One was simply amazing, and looked impressive. GxKTNE was just so fun to see all my toys in the toybox bash each other. Exactly what I wanted from it.

Saw it yesterday. Was extremely fun. Similar to your thoughts, I thought this film was basically a big-budget Hollywood version of what I've always wanted to see in a Godzilla animated series. (But the showa illustration fits as well) Say what you will about the Netflix CG trilogy, or Singular Point, they just miss the mark for me. Im pretty basic, and a "monster of the week" formula as seen in the Godzilla animated series based on (of all things) the 1998 Godzilla, was probably the best thing to come from that character. Id actually love to see the Monsterverse continued as a cartoon/animated series. They already have the toys, the setup is there. Id love to see a animated series based on IDW's "Rulers of Earth". Something we've never had would be a "monster of the week" type Godzilla series, but it included all the other Toho Kaiju. That would be my dream Godzilla animated series.

Shimo really was the best puppy ;) I liked GxK, but I would definitely have enjoyed more Godzilla. Godzilla -1 was a fantastic movie, and I absolutely loved it. The monsterverse is quite a different style. :)

I saw it in IMAX with a huge crowd and everyone had a blast with the movie. It was the exact opposite of Godzilla Minus One and I was totally fine with that. Had a lot of fun and I’m excited to check it out again.

I saw it yesterday and while I enjoyed it, it was likely my least favorite of the monsterverse. My main criticism is a personal thing and it’s just that I wish Godzilla was utilized differently. While it was cool, it’s really felt like an after thought. I think it’s just because I care more about Godzilla than Kong as a character, so this basically being a Kong movie without the quality film making that skull island has left me underwhelmed. To be fair though, when I first saw it GvK was my least favorite but now it’s the one I find myself rewatching the most so I’ll see if this grows on me more.

I really enjoyed New Empire. Yes there were problems, like there being low stakes and Skar King did not feel as threatening as say Mechagodzilla or Ghidorah. Shimonon the other hand felt sympathetic since she was being forced to kill. It is an escapist film and I appreciate it for that. Definitely more entertaining than Ghostbusters

People make the mistake of comparing the tones of Minus One and this film. Minus One isn’t a fantastic film just because they went with a darker tone, it’s because it is clearly a passion project. This is a film Yamazaki has wanted to make for a long time and it’s apparent in everything from the writing and effects to the music and characters. It is one of the most well crafted films I’ve seen in a while. I think many make the mistake of believing that if a film is homaging the Showa era the story doesn’t have to be good and the characters can be flat since those films didn’t always have the best showing in those categories. It’s been 50+ years since the Showa era, and though I love those films, I don’t think we should excuse a film NOW if it has lazy writing and bad characterizations. We should want better. A compelling story and characters make a simply entertaining film one that stands the test of time. I haven’t seen this film yet but I’ve watched a few reviewers and it seems for the most part I was right in my guess that it focuses a lot on the visuals but could have done better ironing out the kinks in the story and the people aren’t that great. I want Toho and Legendary to make the best Godzilla films they can so it’s disheartening to see so many ready to defend less than the best efforts possible. Imitate the best parts and improve on what could have been better.

The biggest issue with the film for me is the underutilization of skar king, Shimo, Godzilla, and of course what you pointed out the rush and convenient handling of the beast glove and g and k’s relationship. None of that really destroyed my enjoyment of the film though. I still loved it

I really enjoyed the movie, may be my favorite in the MV, but I did feel Godzilla wasn't initially supposed to be in this (Since it began as a Son of Kong film). In the film Kong goes through a very emotional journey about finally finding more of his people to then find out they're enslaved by a Tyrant, while Godzilla basically just works out in the meantime lmao Still, a fantastic saturday afternoon movie. Hopefully Wingard gets to give Godzilla more to do in the next film.

Honestly I quite enjoyed it. It does have its flaws I’m not going to lie however the monster action was pretty awesome! The human characters were okay I thought most of them were underutilized. I don’t mind if Kong was the focus but I felt that Godzilla could have used more screen time to keep it balanced. I’m not saying I’m happy with the film but overall it was just spectacle over substance type of film. I’m curious what will they do next since Adam Wingard has an idea for a sequel for both Kong and especially Godzilla. Which I hope we get a Godzilla focused movie next since I think Kong’s character arc felt kind of complete with this movie. And it would be nice if the Big G as well as the other titans get fleshed out more. But those are just my thoughts. I saw it in IMAX with friends and the experience was great!

I liked the movie, it felt like a true kaiju movie. So much eye candy, and it's like many people are saying, very Showa-esque. I still feel GvK is the best one, I think it's the best made, and there's a little bit of bias there due to the time in which it was released; it was a weird time overall. I think Shimo should've been a Ghidorah level threat. I think the tone should've been darker, and I had the assumption Shimo was kept under the pyramids, and Monarch knew about her all along, and she was going to be released at least 1/3 into the movie. I thought Godzilla and Kong would be fighting her together and lose, then have to get their adaptations. I thought Skar King would've been introduced a lot earlier, and would've been as threatening as Kong (he still was, but there was a cowardice to him), and after Godzilla and Kong's first defeat, Shimo would've been going around the world, freezing cities and oceans. I had a much different depiction as to what was going to happen, due to how Shimo was being described. But overall, I'd watch it again. I enjoyed it and I hope it does well. I want more of these movies.

Overall, I thought Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was pretty decent. I think it had some pretty high highs but in some ways also some pretty low lows. I kind of left the theater wanting a bit more out of it. I really didn't love the pacing, the movie has a breakneck speed and a lot of times I think it really sabotages some of the more impactful moments, they don't really get time to linger. The big final fight in general almost felt like it ended before it even began. The stuff with Kong and Suko was stellar and easily the highlight of the movie, their dynamic is really endearing. Skar King was generally pretty good too but he still felt a tad under-utilized to me and Shimo especially felt a few steps removed from not a walking plot device per se, but definitely a walking narrative tool to give Skar King some actual leverage. Really wished they established and used Skar and especially Shimo more, it felt like she barely got any opportunities for her actual personality to shine through. The human characters I just generally didn't care for. Trapper had some nice charisma and he definitely gave me Steve Irwin vibes but it felt like he hardly ever got an opportunity to teach us about the Hollow Earth creatures in that way. Would have really liked to see him use his knowledge to get the team out of a sticky situation with a Hellhawk or something similar. Bernie was occasionally funny but still a bit much, kinda felt like he didn't have as much to actually do to this movie or add to the heartfelt side of it. Ilene and Jia definitely have something on paper but in execution I just couldn't get invested in their side of the story. I feel like I really should have since I can relate to Jia's struggle but none of her character progression really stirred me. Godzilla himself, I really didn't love his role in this film. I knew not to go into this movie expecting much from him but even then I was still kind of let down. I didn't really like the way he looked, or moved, or acted. He felt kind of cartoony and over-the-top for me. Feels like he didn't get much in the way of character development either. He has a nice moment with a certain titan (whose general presence in the film feels very shallow and like a last-minute addition even when it surprisingly wasn't) but again, it doesn't last. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed (since I frankly expected as much based on test screenings) but it's bothersome nonetheless. Wingard has hinted he'll really lean into Godzilla more for whatever he has planned next and it sounds promising, really hope it lives up to whatever it is he seems to have cooking. I realizing I'm essaying so I'll wrap it up, but yeah generally I thought it was a decent movie. Has a lot of heart to it but most of the characters, be they human or monster, felt very undercooked. I don't think they really mined all the creative and juicy tidbits out of the good ideas this movie has to its' name. I think I'd give it like a 6/10.

I wanna watch it at day 1, but I'm too busy and need to wait till the weekend. The forum that I joined in, local and international, is already bombarded with "reviews" of the movie. Man oh man, a lot already hating on it, saying it's shallow, heartless and souless, Minus One is better in every single way, this is a cashgrab, Toho only liking the MV cuz of money and won't complain cuz of this, even saying that Takashi Yamazaki isn't being genuine when praising Wingard (saying that it's just him being Japanese, aka polite while not really meant what's being said). I don't mind ppl liking Minus One and disliking Monsterverse. But there is a better way to express them. By making a constructive and argumentative reviews, that regards the given context of the movie. Give criticism that is still within the scope of what the movie trying to do. All and all I'm till excited for this movie, can't wait till Sunday. I'll be watching it with my dad. Also, Hiya's Shimo is up for pre-orders. What better way to start the movie than buying its merch, right?

I saw the movie yesterday. And sadly I was pretty let down. Skar king was introduced way too late to make any impact and the human plot line this time around was a slog. Even Dan Steven’s charisma couldn’t save it for long. Despite being the same length as GvK it felt so much longer due to the terrible pacing. Even the fights don’t feel nearly as epic as GvK. The only redeeming factor was the King Kong and suko scenes. I wanted to love the movie so bad, but by the time (very minor spoiler) Skar king finally shows up over an hour into the movie, I was so mentally checked out that I just didn’t care anymore. Maybe I’ll enjoy more on the second watch. (and before anyone says it: I am NOT comparing it to minus one. I’m only comparing it to GvK, wingards previous monsterverse movie, which I loved)

I think one of the most beautful things about King of the Monsters was how it mythologized the Kaiju. Ghidorah was so terrible that it was erased from eons of myth, an embodiment of despair and hopelessness. Godzilla is the dragon awakened by man's folly and persists like the evils of Pandora's Box, once unleashed never to be contained again. Along with the evils of that box came hope, Mothra. Mothra is symbolically linked with Godzilla and she also represents rebirth from the ashes like a Pheonix. Rodan is raw power, unconstrained and burning everything around it. It is utilized by others as a means to an end. That end given by Ghidorah, the destruction of the world to terraform it into it's own habitat and thus doom for all was trumped by wisdom and guidance (Mothra), which stilled rage and passion (Rodan). I'm not reading too much into this either. The kaiju were written to represent aspects of various mythos, and were tied to the elements and tarot cards. It would not be such a bad thing for there to be competant story telling and world building to go along with the monster action. It has turned from that into big monkey punches big lizard, awe isn't Shimo just a cute snow puppy. You don't even need to bring Minus One into the conversation, GxK falls short within the standards of it's own cinematic universe. You also don't need to sacrifice one to have the other. KoTM was just a fine without one being aware of all of the above but it is still there for those that want it. Shallow writing and vain spectacle are more damaging than critique. Time was right when they said "Godzilla x Kong Shows Godzilla Is Doomed to Turn Dumb", although I wouldn't be as generous as the article itself is. Even when Showa Godzilla was tail sliding and breath flying, the movies still at least had a message or a thought it wanted to leave you with. GxK does no such thing and it's a shame that there is so much promise to be built upon from the premise set up within the earlier films of the Monsterverse that they fail to capitalize on. All that said, GxK was fun but I wish it was so much more.

I saw the film on the day of release, and to be completely honest, I didn't like it all that much. I think that this film would've benefit so much from just being another Kong film, remove Godzilla from the equation. I genuinely really enjoyed all the story with Kong and the great apes, and wanted to see it explored more. Godzilla has such minimal screentime in the film that I think it would've just been better to have cut him from the film. The inclusion of the 'resolution' also felt very forced, and didn't have any greater impact on the film. Another issue I had with the film, which it shares with GvK, is that it really feels like the previous monsterverse films don't exist. GvK and GxK feel so disconnected from the rest of the monsterverse and everything it's established, even outright retconning things at times. I really hope that we can a new director for the next Monsterverse film(s), Adam Wingard just doesn't work imo. TL;DR I think this would've worked better as a Kong solo film, no Godzilla involvement whatsoever.

I like the pensive thumbnail. "Hmm, I must organize my very serious thoughts" 😃 Also, In-N-Out Burger is decidedly okay. You kinda' have to have it if you're out in California, but I think it's a fairly upper-mid-range fast food burger. Wait, what were we actually talking about? Oh yeah... I have an intuition that this might have been more interesting if they went through the beats in GVK of Godzilla gets killed by Mechagodzilla who gets killed by Kong, thus bestowing upon him the title of King Kong by proxy and allowing us to have a movie like this without the MonsterVerse GINO to be there and all OP. Curiousity got the better of me and I watched an extended clip of the Egypt fight, and honestly, I was laughing the entire time so... I don't know... Toonie theatre?

Same thing I wrote on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics that didn't like this movie shouldn't be reviewing this movie. It's OK they didn't get it, and get what we as Godzilla fans want. I wouldn't take a review for "Old School" or "King Pin" and I sure as Hell don't care what their opinion is on this movie. You don't ask an opera critic to review a Metallica album. A lot of these critics came into this movie with a preconceived idea, and it shows. Rotten Tomatoes critic reviews have become a joke. Look at the people who gave this movie a bad rating and then honestly ask yourself if they told you in person if you would even let them finish talking. Screw you critics. We don't need you.

I almost walked out, it was pretty insulting. Godzilla was sidelined again, not sure why he was even in it.
