There's not one Ghanaian who can afford to pay $2,000 a month for a house on their salary. If they can, they would be living in their own houses. And if they do live in such a rented house, it is likely their employer - typically a bank- is paying for it. We're therefore left with expatriates who pay these ridiculous amounts, with the assistance of their employers (embassies, UN, multinationals, even so-called NGOs.). (There are apartments that go for $3,000 pm at Roman Ridge, which of course no Ghanaian can afford.) So we're building the country up for foreigners to live in the best homes, while most of our people live in substandard homes in substandard communities. No wonder there's so much corruption.

I think that while people get all excited about the beautiful, wonderful, practical houses and are willing to sacrifice for that kind of rent (especially for their families' comfort), they forget that the outrageous cost of daily livelihood could tip over their well-planned budget. Let's face it, if rent is going up, so will the prices of basic food, basic amenities etc. - doubling, tripling or quadrupling. That is where the disconnect comes in. And I am not in any way saying this was the situation here since I do not know this family.

That's overpriced and too much money for rent. Rent is overpriced in Accra. Not to mention they would want that $2000 one to two years in advance, not monthly. So at $24,000 initially. We don't even have to do that in the west unless it's a down-payment to purchase a home or some land etc. Not all at once for rent.

If renting from a double income expat perspective it might seem reasonable although I disagree till some extent especially renting in Joburg 2 k USD can get you way better property then Accra presents. But it's also the market demand momentum, safety and Obroni coming in jacking up the prices. I have traveled many countries in the continent and barely any builds affordable housing for the locals which is a shame. Even most diaspora cannot afford it.

In California precisely San Francisco, Los Angels, a small studio apartment can cost $1500 to $3000. New York and DC is worse. An entire house like this in the States is priced half a million and above(as USD). So it very cheap in Ghana.

I charge in cedis and would never slap a dollar price on any house I rent. The truth is security and gated community mean nothing in Ghana, you can live in a gated community and still get robbed. One of the biggest cases in Ghana of murder and theft took place in a gated community. Security men will take bribe for armed robbers to enter. Gated and fenced with generator means nothing. Those things, you can have security and generator in a normal house in a nice area for quarter the price in Ghana if you know where to look.

@@mariam9977 Maybe not! Rich people actually try as much as possible to hold on to the money. 2K USD monthly rent is like flushing hard earned money down the drain. If it were a mortgage, that could have been considered an investment. I guess the target renters are expatriates; because how many average well to do Ghanaians can make that kind of money in a month?
