i feel like so many people worry too much about how LONG they study for and not the actual CONTENT they’re studying. i see so many people including studytubers and my own friends be like: i’m gonna do 2 hours this day, 4 hours that day, 6 hours blah blah blah” and i find that really hard to keep up. Instead, what i like to do, is say to myself: “i’m gonna do two or three topics today, two topics that day” etc, and i feel like it’s so much more accomplishable because you aren’t forcing yourself to study for a certain amount of time - you’re making yourself get those two topics done and one of those topics could take 30 minutes while the other takes an hour! it’s not about how long you study for it’s about the actual content you’re studying.
@akanta57463 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. The whole point of studying (and school in general) is to learn the material, and that should be the main driving motivator. You should never study for the sake of studying; studying is just a medium to transfer knowledge from the material you're studying from to your brain. Also, I find that studying without a timeframe in mind make me remember the content better overall since you;re more immersed in the subject without having to worry about schedules or stuff. Ironically, at least for me, I find that separating studying by content rather than by hours actually makes me too curious and immersed in the material that after I learn something I immodestly want to the next section, especially for subjects I'm interested in. For example, during a HGAP cram session I originally told myself to learn about two concepts but ended up finding the topic so interesting I read the whole textbook in a night.
@cerit4023 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The memorization is more effective when you’re writing it. Example : If someone studies for 6 hrs and only read the textbook, that won’t actually be effective as much as writing it. Also, if you like the subject or have interest in the subject, it’d be twice as enjoyable than saying “I hate this subject”. Study methods are extremely important for studying.
@akanta57463 жыл бұрын
@@cerit402it really depends on the person though. For some people, writing might be better. For some others, lectures are more effetive. It really doesn't matter how you learn something, it matters if you learned it or not. Although I do agree that having interest in the subject makes it way easier to learn and prevents you from getting burnt out.

Totally take advantage of office hours, even if you think the concept is obvious. Sometimes it clicks better if someone explains it to you alongside your notes or has a conversation about it with you. Plus, 2 things: take advantage of office hours for professors who are experts in your field or if you are really interested in their class because they can become like an extra advisor and there might be a point where you need letters of recommendation or something and we get SO BORED DURING OFFICE HOURS. When I TAed I would sit there for hours every week doing my homework hoping someone would come ask me a question from any of the sections in the class and I had 1 student come once in a semester, it was terrible. Sometimes professors are just down for a chat about whatever during office hours, but obviously mileage may vary on that one though...lol

Helping my son with distance learning 820am-230pm and working my own job from 9am-7pm remotely as well leaves little time for me to actually sit down and have ideal study sessions. I spend a few hours at night watching my lectures and taking notes. But when it comes time to study those notes time is limited, so I have flash cards on my phone or practice exam apps that I constantly do while I walk the dog. Sometimes I’ll even take my textbook or a reference book I’ve gotten on my walk with my dog so while we stroll the neighborhood I’m reading practice questions, doing flash cards on crash course or whatever I can to get that info in my head. Of course I’d love to spend hours in a library but with COVID and my life, it’s not possible right now, so we do what we have to.

Same. 25 minutes feels like a less daunting amount and easier to tackle. And for me, I need those 5 minutes to stretch my wrist and elbow to not get Carpal Tunnel while drawing. You get to rest just a little bit, enough to refocus and not too much to completely lose the flow. I usually just get up, walk around, do a couple of sit-ups and wrist rotations and get back to work. And since my brain knows how long 25 minutes feels now my drawing has gotten faster as I focus on finishing more in given timeframe.

(Although i am guilty of working through the breaks sometimes) One thing i do differently is that when my day is bad, i just take a long break of 20 minutes instead of 10! 2. I do both - re-reading and active study method (with the help of the toggle option on notion). I ask myself questions I wrote, and then re-read the material with emphasis on what I forgot/didn't know. My school teachers require me to write the notes and upload so I might as well make them pretty lol. I also go through the material they provide before the test. 3. My mum always asks me to read aloud but i'm not an auditory learner I just can't remember shat if i read aloud? Like it doesn't help? 4. Ehhh IDK I always study either at my desk or else I just can't focus (joint family issues) 5. I have never done a mindmap and i don't know but i get along just fine without

From just listening to something, it's hard to memorize because our brain doesn't know that we are learning because all day long we listen to people so he doesn't activate the memory. Same for reading because we read all the time. The most efficient for me to learn is to do something unusual like rerwiting, walking while reading, singing etc

I don’t necessarily like the pomodoro method because most apps don’t restrict you from going to another app or website, but apps that do restrict you from doing that like forest and flora tells you that your tree will “die” if you don’t stay focused but someone who just really feels like procrastinating, watching a yt video, or messaging their friend won’t really care if their tree dies. Like so what if my tree die? Why should I care, i just really want to take a “break.”So in the end, it just really comes back to self-discipline. 💫

For me, if I had just a measly five minute break I’d literally spend the whole time just watching the time because the time constraint is so small so I’d just be counting down to study again so it is pretty much useless I like to study for like an hour and go and do something else for 30-60 minutes as I find that works better for me personally.

you're so real. I feel better about being imperfect in studying and life thanks to you.

This is actually how I do the Pomodoro method! Set the studying time go 50 mins and the break time to 10 mins.

same, and if I'm super motivated i do 1H15M of work and 15M of rest

I agree with almost all of these! For me personally, reading aloud helps me tremendously. But that is just me!

Is it weird that listening to her while studying helps me focus 😅

Even though it is the least recommended study method, re-reading has always worked well for me, maybe it’s because it helps to see the big picture in the topics and so, my brain does a summary of the topics on its own. I am aware for subjects like maths it is not the best study method, but even for history which is a very detailed, memory focused subject, I’m able to do well with just re-reading the books and notes.

if anyone likes to watch pomodoro videos instead of just setting a timer but doesn’t like the typical 25/5 method, the 50/10 method is also very popular and there are lots of videos for it! (50 minutes of work time, 10 minutes of break time).

i totally agree with the pomodoro not having a long enough break to look forward to! i usually do 30 - 60 minutes of work with 10 - 15 minutes of break instead! reading out loud personally has helped me when i'm like not able to concentrate/reviewing info as i'm actually reading it OUT LOUD, so i need to read it and process it. but i agree with how it is overall not very effective. also been loving the editing!!

25 minutes is way too little. i like to do three hours with an hour’s break in between. i have issues focusing sometimes but once i get into the flow i can’t get out

Dayum finally someone says this out! I also found that pomodoro method and mindmapping doesn't suit me at all and the fact that mindmap is one of my assignment back then was :)
