I'm a 64 year old Disabled Veteran ... and I'd like to tell you how PROUD I am of you ... (and the other young Soldiers, Airmen, and Marines) who are taking your military experience SERIOUSLY. I don't need to tell you... but it saddens me to see so many young people who... don't want to work. HOW can anyone NOT want a job?? Then I somehow pull this up.... any my heart sings. One caution though.... 1. Remember I mentioned that I'm a ... "64 year OLD VETERAN"? 2. And that I'm a "DISABLED" vet? Yeah. Real talk. All that emotionalism? Please ... I know you're in the prime of your life and having fun and you're witty .... but that stuff takes a toll on our nervous system over time. If you can balance your work ethic, your pride, beauty, and all around ...'awesomeness" ... with some meditation and yoga or simply doing more CALMING activities like going camping ... etc... it will benefit you GREATLY over time. There's too much Borderline Personality ("EMOTIONALISM") in the culture these days. If you get some time, I highly advise viewing a couple of videos by Dr. Gabor Mate. Excellent stuff on early childhood development, veterans issues, attachment issues, women's health, families, etc... Just FYI stuff. Again... I'm highly impressed. I just don't want to run into you at the VA all stressed out. ((LoL))

I prayed that you would go to boards and do great. I didn't know you went through all that. As bad as it felt to you it's going to make you a great soldier. We as subbies feel like family when you allow us along on your journey through life. I'm going to give you the same advice I gave my daughter who is also in the army. Your built for anything the army throws at you because of who and what you are. They think they know you but they have no idea. Show them. Oh a little advice. If you haven't been to PLC aka PLDC bka N.C.O. Academy. Be prepared for that. If the standard is still like it was when I was in. N.C.O Academy will send you right back to your unit in a heartbeat if not prepared properly and squared away. An you will have to answer to your Battalion Sgt Major and 1st Sergeant on why you couldn't make it. They pride themselves on sending their soldiers to School and completing it. Not a good look to them if you don't. Good luck!!

My CSM made all the SPCs go to the board even if they were getting out. It was not a pretty sight. They shouldn't make Soldiers go to boards if they don't want it takes away from the quality of the board.

Sweets, your my hero! My friend got 3 general courts Marshalls, got out with honorable! My other friend wanted out after re-upping and just put out a rumor he was gay, 3 months later , out. Honorable. Of course this was 1984. But they had a thing called Project Upgrade and we're kicking out all the slackers. Of coarse these were the party days as no one messed with Ronald Reagon. So it was hard to not get a captainsmast, 3 days bread and water. I loved restriction though, made slot of $ taking people's watches. You could get takeout brought to the ship, and other unmentionables. And was on Cinderella Liberty more than once. I loved those days, all the country we went to ,not being sober for a

Yeah The promotion board can be nerve racking. But it's really nothing to it. I finally went to the board for E-5 in March of 1984. I guess I had a little advantage. I was really cool with the 1st Sgt in my Battery. (Bravo Battery). I also was cool with the Battalion Sgt Major. But the 1st Sgt from Alpha Battery in the Battalion. He was from the same hometown as my youngest daughter mother. He knew my ex and her mother, grandmother and use to hang with one of my ex uncles. What a small word it was. I remember when I was in the Army active from 1976 to 1986. It was good to know certain people that you may need later. Cooks, Supply Clerks, certain Maintenance people in the Motor Pool, Medics and people who worked in S2 & S4. Trust me. I was no ass kisser either. I made Spec 4 in October 1977. After just 14 months in the Army. After 18 months of being a Spec 4. In 1979 I was suppose to go to the E-5 board. But I got in trouble and caught a Field Grade AR-15. Suspended bust though. So I remained a Spec 4 for another 10 months. Then I left Germany in June 1980 to be stationed here in the states. By now I'm senior in grade as an E-4. So now in my stateside unit. I was stationed at (Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland). The E-4s I would ended up working with. Had no field experience and I out ranked them in grade and time in service. But I had to prove myself. In 1981 my supervisors were talking E-5 board to me. But wouldn't you know it. I get in trouble again. This time company level AR-15 busted back down to PFC for 6 months. I would make Spec 4 again in March 1982. Then go back to Germany in May 1983. Now I'm going on 7 years in the Army. I should've been an E-6 by then. But then I started to calm down and stop being so street and gangsta doing shit. I started taking my soldiering a little more seriously. It's not that I didn't soldier when the uniform was on. It was when I took it off. An that (Bed-Stuy) Brooklyn, New York City attitude flared up. I'd finally make E-5 (Spec 5) in August 1984. But what you today soldiers probably don't know. Back in the late 70s and 80s. Buck Sergeants and Staff Sergeants would constantly clash with Specialist Sixes & Fives . As well as hard striped Corporals E-4s and Spec 4s. I mean literally fights behind the woodshed. Take that rank off the collar. An get your knuckle game going. Because hard striped E-4s, 5s & 6s out ranked Specialists 4s, 5s & 6s. So finally in 1984, DoD decided to do away with the Specialist ranks. But in 1985 they modified their decision. To keep Specialist 4s, but do away with Specialist 5s and 6s. That's why today all Spec 4s, will become hard striped Buck Sergeants, E-5s, when promoted no matter what the job field. But young sista you keep your head up. Congratulations on being P-status. If you stay in as long as I did. Get that rank and earn it. Army life gets a little easier with rank on your collar. #PEACE

Reply 2: sober for months. I feel for you guys now, in the political grinder non ended. My Grandpa went from a E-1 to E-6 in I- hour on Omaha beach, still got his Eisenhower uniform. Thank you all for your service! Remember, you don't need a uniform to be honorable.

Tarez Davis you don’t need a degree. It helps with points to get promoted. If you don’t make SGT after 8 years U get kicked out. Some people’s MOS require super low points and can get by with super good PT score and Marksmanship.
