I am a Civil War Enthusiast and would love to do this someday. I love your passion for finding these shells. It reminds me of the 10 tornadoes I chased in one day and one of those I used for my profile picture. Behind storm chasing, anything to do with the Civil War is tops for me. I feel your passion and would scream for joy if I found a shell in a river.

This was one of those incredible days people would call you a liar, but you've got the proof. That's what's so sweet about it.Your shells were in a very low- oxygen environment, and were perfectly preserved. And if the water's not salt or brackish, they'll age well. Just awesome. Hope you found someone competent to deactivate them (drill 'em slow and drill 'em wet).

Aquachigger- I'm caught up on your recent videos and enjoy them so much, I thought I would look back again at some of your older videos. This one is so great! Your enthusiasm is catching and I got caught up in this one for sure. Your rig with the magnet on the end of the pole I have always thought was a brilliant build.Did you make it? Your extensive knowledge of history and specifically on the Civil War is another reason I watch you. I'm always learning something new and if I should be so lucky as to find something from the Civil war era, I hope I'd be able to identify it. Though living in CT. I doubt I'd find much of that. I did grow up in Guilford where one of the oldest stone houses in New England resides as a museum. I wish I could detect the grounds of that place! I would of course donate whatever I found, back to the museum. I don't mean to make this so long,I just want you to know that watching one of your video's on whatever the subject is, it always is a learning experience be it a type of button or a buckle from a saddle. That goes for your bottle digs too. That is something I have been doing since I was a child and you can never stop learning enough about that subject as well.I think I'm going to have to do some traveling this summer after I get my license to carry a gun. And for the states I don't qualify to carry,I'll have some mace or pepper spray, as a single woman, you can never be protected enough when traveling alone. Thanks again for another steller video!!~Dolly

With the wagon wheel, numerous horse shoes and shells, I'd bet that a "caisson stopped rolling along" at that point of the river.

Far out finds, Beau. I'm sure you didn't expect the load...lode? To me, "live" means a spill or a stash. The cartwheel rims remaining while the wood has naturally gone, might more strongly suggest a spill during flight, though. They would have recovered them if they'd had the time. How many packed in a case? You might find the box hardware next time and then, there's the cobs. It would be interesting to know if they used corn cobs for cushioning and separation when packing the shells together in wooden boxes for transport, too. Unlike shell containers today, the empty box would have made for a dandy campfire and the cobs...well, maybe kindling or TP for the bunghole? I don't know for sure, but unused Civil War cobs time capsuled with the shells in the mud could be pretty rare. Cornholio would know. :))

You're real close on the wagon wheel guess , Beau. That stuff,-- if it has holes intermittently with two chamfered edges and two not chamfered,-- is the strap iron from the top edge of a wooden wagon box to reinforce the top edge of the sideboards. It's probably between 5/8 and 3/4 wide, and 1/8 thick. The holes are to nail it onto the edge of the sideboards. It was probably folded up when they discarded it.. That tree where you found that artillery - was it a SHELLbark Hickory? Ba- dum- bum!!! Great big day for you, Bud!! Continued Good Luck, Beau. 57

I have watched this video with great interest, and wondered why so many shells were found in creeks or water in general. My thoughts are the following. After hostilities ceased land owners or people in general who found unused ordinance gathered them up and threw them in the water, as a safety precaution. This might not be true in all cases but un fired in water must hold some merit.

The story one could write about what you found is endless, I mean to me it looks like a company of men from the civil war period marching along the river break a wheel from the artillery wagon the melted lead you found could of been extra material leftover from them fixing the wagon wheel with what they had available which would of been tons of lead. And then the practice target you found says the men got bored waiting on the wheel to get fixed and let off some steam. Or just so many more different stories that those objects could tell pretty amazing
