Relocating Hornets is super important! I make it a point of relocating at least 10 wasp nests a season, and this is the very first nest relocation of 2023! This species is "Bald Faced Hornet - Dolichovespula maculata (Not really a Hornet, they are actually Yellow Jackets). Stay tuned for updates on this colony!
If you would like to support the Hornet King channel financially (though not at all necessary, but very much appreciated!), donations can be recieved through my paypal:

If you would like to send me or the animals something, send them to:
PO BOX 174

Animals Names:
Rhea: Rhea-the-Rhea
Emus: Sweetie, Baby, and Doris
Squirrel: Princess Peaches

Hey Bret, I have a relocation proposal. If you do another EU hornet relocation, what do you think about adding a transparent rubber or plastic tube between the outside hole and the nest enclosure? I think it will be cool to film all that the hornets are bringing in and out of the nest.

Have you ever tried strength testing envelope/ comb Brett? Id love to see a video on tensile vs compression strength etc. Envelope looks brittle and easy to tear, but surprisingly strong we used to drum on them with sticks as kids (empty of course!).

Oh man.. poor lil squirrel.. The moment you mentioned the issue with her bones, my ears perked up. When you mentioned Spinach, I had to comment this. Spinach might be high in calcium but it is also very high in Oxalate. Oxalate interferes, blocks calcium absorption. I didnt know this until I had a Red Eared Slider as a pet. I kind of go hyperbolic when I research things. And I did this to be able to give my RES the best life possible. Its mentioned in all turtle guides. I never left my Finches have it either. I dont recall if that was in any bird guides, I didnt want to risk it. With this knowledge, I often think about how it would effect old people. You hear all about falls and broken bones. Apologies if you already knew this about Spinach.
@HornetKingOfficial
@HornetKingOfficial Жыл бұрын
That's excellent info! There are also oxalates in almonds too, but are already bound to the calcium. So free calcium in her diet will still be absorbed. But you are totally right about too much spinach having a reverse effect if it's a dominant staple in her diet. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on the subject! I, like you, go super deep into these types of things too, so any info I can get from other people is ALWAYS welcomed! So thank you for sharing!

That’s cool. Last spring, I had a queen start a nest under the overhang right outside my bedroom window. Because I’m a regular viewer of this channel, I wanted to let it go, and watch it grow throughout the year, but I just couldn’t do it. It was in a location where a lot of people would be walking under it, and I like to open my window when the weather gets nice. I just couldn’t imagine having a full sized “hornets” nest hanging there.
@heatherkohlwey8379

That is so cool. I watched a nest grow from just a tube to something quite sizeable. It was not in a good location. Once I got stung, the truce was over. I had to think about the poor person coming to read our electric meter and had no choice but to eliminate the hazard. I do leave them when I can. Thank you for saving this one. Stay safe, and God bless.

The bunny was very difficult to rehab being so young, she is at a great home now though! Love the idea of the larva being a staple in their diet. Idk why I never considered that an option! So excited to see a new video from you. I was worried that you were gone from YT. Your birds are absolutely beautiful and have gotten so big! The new birdyard is great. I didn’t see this discussed in any of the other comments but I’m wondering how does this queen hornet get more workers? Wasn’t she was the only one in the nest when you relocated it? I know you said something about some larva from the nest becoming adult hornets; if those larvae hadn’t made it in the relocation would the queen just have laid more? Thanks, and good to see you back!

Thanks for sharing Bret! A question has been haunting me for a while. Are all black and white wasps the same species - Dolichovespula maculata? Depending on where I am in North America, I have noticed that they can look different, based on the size/proportions of their body parts and their black vs. white coloration and/or stripe pattern. I have also noticed differences within the same geographical area, at times. Are they all different varations, or perhaps subspecies, of dolichovespula maculata, or could some be their own species? To give you more details, I live in Northwest Territories, Canada (northern Canada). The black and white wasps which I have seen here are all 'textbook looking' dolichovespula maculata. In Ontario, I have seen the 'textbook looking' ones, but have also seen ones which deviated considerably. Some were smaller. Some had more white around the face. Some had extra stripes around the abdomen, more similar to the black and yellow variations of 'yellowjackets'. I once came across a ground nest of ones that were smaller and had more stripes on their abdomens. the latter seems very strange indeed! I am not talking about 'paper wasps'. I can clearly tell the difference of those based on their body shape and proportions. Although my memory is somewhat hazy, I may have seen some paper wasps which were black and white, but that is not what I am referring to.
