@FreestyleTricktips4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, after skating a couple of Lindgren-derived single kicks for a few months, I realised I couldn't go back to having concave. Bloody stuff just gets in the way. I think my board's a single kick in disguise; both tails are super mellow, so it's sort of a half-way house between the two styles. There's still some benefits to using a proper single kick, but it's nice to have something which feels a bit like a single kick, but I can skate it both ways round without any adjustments. You've been absolutely ripping it up on the Kill Your Idols. That deck obviously really works for you!

I've already done tricktips for the main parts of that combo. Assuming you can already do the no handed 50-50 (freestyletricktips.com/truck/no-handed-50-50/), you want to work on rolling into it (freestyletricktips.com/truck/rolling-no-handed-50-50/). The frontside twist is awkward, but fairly similar to frontside caspers (freestyletricktips.com/casper/frontside-casper/). Guide it down to rail (which I don't have a tip for, sorry!), and then slap a crossfooted butterflip to casper out (freestyletricktips.com/casper/crossfoot-butterflip-to-casper/). So lots to work on, but it's all very manageable in time!

Any chance of there ever being a single kick version of your deck? I love the side cuts and the dimensions, and I really want to try a flat board. I’m currently skating (very very poorly!) an old eastbilt Reggie Barnes copy and I’m so used to single kick. I’m not interested in the KYI board, it’s fine but it’s not for me. Or better yet, convince me to get a double kick. Mind you, I do a lot of rail tricks…. (Badly)… thanks, Tony.
@FreestyleTricktips3 жыл бұрын
I doubt there'd be a single kick Gale model any time soon. The KYI is effectively my single kick pro model - I designed the shape and the mould - so I don't really *need* an official single kick model. Also, I'm not a big fan of people having their names on shapes they don't actually skate. That always bothered me about street skating, and I hate the idea that people would buy a Moonshine deck thinking it's what Denham, Nick or myself rode because our name was on it, only to find we were skating a totally different shape. For what it's worth, I always say my board is a double kick for people who like single kicks. I rode a single kick almost exclusively for about a year before my board came out; the kicktails are designed to be so mellow that it's a half way house between the average double kick and a proper single kick, and you get a lot of the benefits of the flat nose without having to lose bidirectionality. You should give it a go - there's not really anything else like it.
@Francis7Music3 жыл бұрын
@@FreestyleTricktips good point about putting your name on something you don’t actually use. @@FreestyleTricktips Cool move. KZbin needs 1/8 speed instead of only 1/4 speed playback for analyzing some of these skate moves. Luckily that one doesn't look too complicated. I like the one footed turns you did before an afterwards as well.
@FreestyleTricktips4 жыл бұрын
Bebops aren't complicated visually, but they're very, very picky in reality. Your starting position on the board has to be perfect, your weight distribution has to be exact, and both feet need to be in sync with each other on the pop or it won't come up right. Once you've gotten it to a vertical position, the rest of the trick is easy. But yeah... getting that take-off clean and consistent is a nightmare.

KK, quick review! I hate this board, because it's great. First tip, Paris trucks AND risers- it's just too damn high a setup. Once I took off the risers, it felt much less terrifying. Having a helluva time with the twin tails, though. I have a hard time finding the sweet spot for rail flips and I always did Caspers off the nose and now I can't do them at all. This is my fault, not the board's. I love the side cuts, this should be a standard, and in rail it's very stable, though I have to add more washers because the Paris/Seismic combo doesn't quite sit flush, but it's by mils, and my personal preference. Secondly, the board is really tough, I've been falling all over the place and landing on it with various body parts and it looks new. The no-concave thing is weird, but I can see the benefits of this approach, and I remember years ago there was Pierre Andre with no concave as well. In fact, my friend still has it, I think, with Thunder freestyle trucks and Vision wheels...! So all in all, I'm really happy with it, except that basically it's much better at being a board than I am at being a skater. I am reduced to being even worse than I was, I can hardly stay on it (ok, the trucks were too tight), but I feel like this will force me to clean up the slop and progress. I don't have a lot of time to skate, and I'm sore as fuck, but I'm happy. Kid at the skatepark comment: "hey, your board is really small." "It's a freestyle board," I reply... If I remember right it was actually cut from a street mould so had a bit of an upturned nose at the very end and a surprising amount of concave. I used to ride for Capital back in the 2000s and they sent me precisely one of their single kicks in that shape. I skated it once and gave it to a friend - I just couldn't get on with it at all. You know, I didn’t know the Eastbilt was built from a street deck, that makes total sense now, it does have a lot of concave and a slightly turned up nose. The previous deck, the McCall, was totally different but I loved it, I have two of them. I can barely skate in a straight line and yet somehow I have six or seven vintage decks! When last I tried to skate, I had a friend who had a Capital, and I even went to a contest here, which is nuts. @FreestyleTricktips3 жыл бұрын
I'll put it on the list, but honestly, there's not a whole lot to say about double kickflips. Really, it's just a power trick. You need enough strength in your thighs to be able to launch upwards and to the side a lot more than people realise. That's why people tend to get stuck at 1.5 or 2.5 flips; they're good enough at kickflips or double kickflips that they've got the technique down, but they've not got enough leg power to launch with enough force to lift the board up and give it time for the additional flip.
@johnnyraven81783 жыл бұрын

@@johnnyraven8178 Sounds like you're kicking sideways too much and not up enough. That's kinda what I was talking about - it's tough to get the upwards launch you need to get the flip round. Double 180 kickflips are bloody exhausting compared to nightmare flips, for instance.

@FreestyleTricktips3 жыл бұрын
A pair of "modern" shape Seismic skids are what you need for my deck. I'm out of stock of those here in the UK but I know Seismic are due to get some more stock in the US this week. Risers: generally a good thing. Taller setups work better in rail and flip a bit easier at the cost of more instability in shuvits. I've done very tall and very low setups, and generally, the very tall ones are more useable for more types of tricks.
@Francis7Music3 жыл бұрын
@@FreestyleTricktips thanks so much for all the help. I think decomposed has those so I’ll get them there. Risers as well. I’m going to have a monster truck setup. Appropriate, as I live in south Florida.

@@Francis7Music I hope you're also adding "truck nuts" to that setup, in that case. And I don't mean the 3/8" nyloc ones.

Hah. I haven't been sick (yet... touch wood), but England's basically been in shut down for a long time. Between the pandemic and the weather, there's nowhere good (or safe) to skate, so I'm just holing up and trying to sort out some Moonshine and Offset stuff ready for when things return back to some sense of normality.

Could you do a video on how to Airwalk? I've been trying it for a while now, I just cant grab the nose properly and all the other how to airwalk video's don't really explain how to do it very well.
@FreestyleTricktips4 жыл бұрын
I think that's because most people don't really think about the grab. You just... grab it. There's not a lot to explain. What's the exact problem you're having? I know that when I revisit airwalks, I have a tendency to fling the board out too far in front of me, so even when I do get the grab, I can't pull it back in enough. Or another problem might be that the board flips or spins as you pop, meaning you can't get the grab at all. Without seeing what's going wrong when you're doing it, it's tough to know what to suggest. (But yes, I'll put it on the list for a tip when the weather improves.)
@holdenburghardt19214 жыл бұрын
@@FreestyleTricktips Whats going wrong for me and the biggest problem is whenever I spread my legs out the board flips, then I just kick away the board when I'm landing.
@FreestyleTricktips4 жыл бұрын
@@holdenburghardt1921 Ah, are you snagging the board with the front foot and ending up doing a slight heelflip? That's pretty common. You've got to lift your foot straight upwards and towards your own body as if you were doing a pop shuvit before you kick out instead of sliding up and out like an ollie. That's a common mistake.
@holdenburghardt19214 жыл бұрын
@@FreestyleTricktips Okay, thanks! I always thought you do an ollie then you extend you feet which caused me to do the heelflip, thanks for the advice!

did i hear that right? you've been skating one deck since January? you mean on and off right? otherwise wow.
@FreestyleTricktips4 жыл бұрын
Yep, just the one deck since the very end of January. I had to change the skid plates a couple of times, and it was getting incredibly worn down, but it was still going (relatively) strong. Moonshine makes good wood.
@_Maxten4 жыл бұрын
@@FreestyleTricktips did the wood eventual feel soggy or lose stiffness?
@FreestyleTricktips4 жыл бұрын
@@_Maxten It never really went soggy, but it definitely was less stiff towards the end. The skid plates meant it still had good pop, but you could feel a bit more flex on it when you were setting up for stuff.

My board broke so I literally just bought this. No trucks or anything. I'm pissed cause I just bought the board. It was a street board so.
@FreestyleTricktips4 жыл бұрын
Your street board snapped? That has to be a sign from the universe that you shouldn't be skating those any more. Hope you enjoy my deck. It'll be weird at first if you're going to it from a street setup, but persevere - it'll make a lot of tricks a lot easier for you. You'll need some shorter trucks, though; I recommend Paris 108s, personally.

@@FreestyleTricktips ya I'm waiting for the email to tell me it's been shipped. The shipping was $48 thought. So over $100. But its worth it. I wanna start learning some rolling 360 finger flips.

@@FreestyleTricktips I'm in canada. I tried skull skates, and decomposed skateboards. To be honest the money dosent matter as long as it's a freestyle deck 😂. Now I just have to find skids and trucks.

@@owengalway I've got a couple of repeat customers in Canada. Apparently the shipping from UK to Canada often works out cheaper than US to Canada shipping. Go figure. Anyway, have a look - these are the trucks I recommend for my deck right now, and maybe it'll work out cheaper getting them from me than bringing them across the US border: offsetskatesupply.co.uk/product/paris-108-trucks/ (If you wait a couple of days I'll have some bushing kits available for them, too.)
