My New Video Monitor For GoPro Camera

The weather hasn't been ideal, so today I am exploring the potential of a new gadget bought for me by one of my patrons and supporters; a 5" 4K TV video monitor to connect with my Gopro action camera for vlogging purposes.
One of the problems I have when out filming is relying on many of the auto features on the Gopro camera. They do a great job, but occasionally, the auto-exposure gets it wrong for me. But I have a fix.

Thanks for this behind-the-scenes video Richard. I am just on the point of setting up my own channel and the technical info is of great interest. As you say, no one should expect an amateur video KZbinr to produce films that are perfect and, for me, I think " real life" quality of you tubers is part of the charm. The background story of the technical issues now and then would be very interesting. It might encourage others to have a go.

Do you know that you can use the GoPro app and a iphone as a monitor for a GoPro? That’s what I use. It’s a little smaller than the monitor that you have just brought. The iphone connects to the GoPro via Bluetooth,so no cables.

I am not an iphone user and prefer not to use my phone and its battery for a monitor.

Neat! I think you will have a lot if good reaction to this. A follow up review after a couple of months of use would be interesting too. I notice there is quite a surprisingly long lag from the GoPro ...

Yes there is a lag. The up side of that is, you can look at the camera, flick eyes to monitor and see yourself looking down lens briefly to see how the shot really looks.

New go pro’s have the problem when you connect your phone with the app, that you cannot see a live preview while recording. Maybe this is a solution! So my question is, while recording, do you still see what you are filming on the screen?

Will this work on the 10? It doesnt have an hdmi only usb c. I dont want to use the media mod as I have an Ulanzi cage with 52mm filter thread on front and want to be able to use my gopro with 52mm filters and a monitor. I’ve seen HDMI to usb c adapters out there but dont know if will work with/damage a gopro?

Not too heavy actually - doesn't affect the stabilisation at all.

It looks like something I should hope to find under the Christmas tree this year. Have you tried it on the gimbal? I am learning how to use the gimbal for more than stabilization, such as controlled panning. I did attach my cell phone on the gimbal to use as a monitor, but it feels off center and heavy.

With the GOPRO Hero 7, after 60 seconds,the monitor automatically dims to such a low level that it is not easy to still make out what you are looking at on screen. I understand that it is something that cannot be over-ridden & that GOPRO have set it like that in order to preserve battery life. When you attach the 5" TV video monitor, does the "dimming" issue still happen after 60 seconds?

I haven't noticed the monitor dim. I think you can reset the internal monitor - but I do have mine dimmed to save the battery.

Now all we need is for that to be a gimbal with object tracking and I would sell everything I currently have with DJI and go with GP. I’d rather use Go Pro, they are a US company and have removed all of their Chinese manufacturing for US bound products.

Spitfire picture Richard... my partner and I considered getting one exactly the same only a few days ago from a local charity shop....but I noticed a small box framed pop up picture of a Victorian scene so bought that instead....it was a chap on a chair in an old Victorian street talking to a small gathering of people...and was prior to a general election....and on his coat I noticed a small red rosette and on the streets wall a tiny poster that said Vote Roberts candidate for the people...at first I was miffed over who this could be then the penny dropped....it was George Roberts who became a labour party MP he stood in Norwich so I assume that was where the scene in the picture was....he was the first Labour party Member of Parliament in Norwich and East Anglia in 1906 when keir hardie was the party leader.i was a little surprised to find this and couldn't find where the pop up picture came from...but my partner still has her eye on the Spitfire picture lol....and yes I found your video interesting as I'm considering buying a Gopro and a monitor would be a rather handy little addition I think..so thx for sharing Richard......about George Roberts MP tockify.com/bclp2018/detail/119/1552554000000

The monitor does have a few issues and is good for certain things, but not all I do. The Spitfire picture is great, I love it.

I ve often noticed you when filming or interviewing someone you look back at the camera are checking expose or run times , must be difficult to keep it to a certain time .
