Back in high school, I always wanted to take an honors course like my twin brother, and when i finally got the chance after my teachers aproval, my own mother pulled me out after 3 days because she "didnt think I could do it" I also learned later that year that they kept me on a learning disability program that my teachers tried to take me off of, because they beleived I didnt need it anymore. (I have ADHD. Back then, it was undiagnosed. They probably thought i was just wasnt trying hard enough) While this expierence is nowhere near as damaging as OP in story 2, I kinda get it when it comes to trouble with parental favoritism in this kind of light, and his sister WILL find out about this one day, and honestly, it might break her. It just sucks to know how little faith parents can have in you, I guess.
@thomasjoseph58762 ай бұрын
In story 2 the parents are really not doing the sister any favors. They KNOW her life won't really end well so they are lavishing all of these "extras" on her knowing her life will most likely end in some sort of failure whether that is a broken or unhappy marriage or worse. I have seen this type of scenario before with a friend of mine who was a Test Pilot for Top Secret Military Projects. The Air Force and the Private Company who built the test vehicles (planes), bought him and his family a $2 million dollar home. They bought them a couple of new vehicles. They created a college fund for his 2 children and they paid for 3 different massive Life Insurance Policies above the extended benefits his family would receive upon his death. Notice they didn't say IF he died. They said UPON his death. He was preparing for a piloting test that he could not even talk about what the vehicle was that he would be flying. The day came, he did his thing and later that day his wife was visited by Air Force Officials. He had died during the flight. That's all they would say. There was no body to bury so they simply had to have a memorial service for him. One of his and my friend in "The Program" who knew what happened couldn't tell his wife or any of his friends what actually did happen. He did say the result was "expected" but they had hoped it would have succeeded. When I asked him what happened to his body and why the ejection system didn't function all he would say is there was nothing left. No body, no body parts, no wreckage. He and the vehicle simply blinked out of existence. Officially he is considered deceased, unofficially, he is considered MIA. So, like the parents in this story, the Air Force and the Private Company who built the test vehicles planned for and expected a failure but hoped for success.

I left a longer comment above explaining why they did it that way, but it is all because they are Indian (south asia), and this is all based in their cultural norms that the daughter must be financially protected by the husband, or the brother if she is still single. If they were to leave her the money, she would be tarnished socially. As a result they indulge her while she is single and they are alive.
@KnightMan162 ай бұрын
You have to remember, OP said they are brown people. Chances are they are probably south asian but either way, that's part of their culture. The son inherits and the daughter marries well to do. From the original post, I could tell this was the case. Even if you disagree with it, that's what they do and they are doing just that. They are preparing her by helping her build connections at the private school and live a life that matches her peers. Once she is beautiful enough, she'll find a rich husband (likely someone who will inherit too). The parents are well off so the offers will come.

Why not? They do it with everything else so why not this one too? Pulling one's self up by the bootstraps is supposed to mean an impossible task as you cannot bend over & pick yourself off the ground without help. A few bad apples was supposed to signify the need to get those apples out immediately before they cause the barrel of apples to rot but somehow they think it's an excuse that means only a few people did bad things. The bottom of the totem pole is supposed to be a place of honor as they are trusted to carry everyone else but in this utterly cuckoo land it means the worst spot. It's wild how little Americans understand these things.

The entire saying and correct saying is, "Blood of the brethren is stronger than the water of the womb." This saying comes from medieval times, and what it means is, that the bond of brotherhood of those who spilled blood together in battle is stronger than the brotherhood bond who came from the same womb. This saying is also where "Blood Brothers" came from. Basically, the bonds one makes with their chosen family are stronger than the blood-born familial bonds.

I think most would leave then to their own devices once they become adults, but I feel like this has to be a sore spot for a lot of parents. You try to teach them right, try to give them what they need, try to teach them right from wrong, yet they just make it their life's mission to be their worst possible selves. It's gotta feel like being between a rock and hard place and a hydraulic press all at once

Sis and fiance suck. BUT instead of she knew how much I love him or how much marrying him means to me. No how much getting married means to me. She just wants to be married doesn't necessarily love her ex fiancé. Only judging from the little info we have

Is anyone else annoyed by how little cultural competency Reddit has. Like people come from different cultures and backgrounds. Not everything has to be how Americans expect it

Story 2: Are OP’s parents really soulless for offering him money when the majority of complaints about his sister were centered about her receiving material things at an earlier age than he did? He apparently has accepted getting that money as well. He admitted being ‘somewhat’ of a troublemaker, so would giving him material things early have encouraged him into becoming entitled? There always more than one side to a post. I think his parents may have had good reasons for making him earn what he received.

Story 1: Sorry, no, that was too low, even if it was only "slightly". OP couldn't have chosen something else? The sister sucks the most, but kids and pets (especially deceased pets) are off limits.

Story 2: wow Op's parents aren't homophobic but somehow still misogynistic? Damn that's impressive
@hilaryc32032 ай бұрын

@hilaryc3203 oh I know about the misogynistic culture in Asia, I live in an African country that doesn't have it worse than them but there are still some sexist beliefs here and there, I'm just surprised that they're not ALSO homophobic since that's also pretty common in those countries
@hilaryc32032 ай бұрын
@@miirax393 It depends on which community they live and what the political tone is. I'm in Canada, where most people don't care about sexuality, unlike the USA where there is a ton of homophobia. The parents still have the son they think will take care of them in their old age, and a daughter to give them grand babies, so in the grand scheme of things, it's all covered for them.

Story 1 Op is a gross person. You got cheated feeling hurt is valid what's not valid is destroying your sister stuff especially something sentimental that's vandalism. I hope the sister presses charges. Throwing the fiances stuff in the garbage is also unnecessary. The only retaliation to cheating should be what you get in a divorce, or if you SO is in the millitary you can get them there. In the millitary cheating isn't allowed that's low class pedestrian behavior and they hold themselves to a higher standard.

What OP doesn't get is he's actually the golden child, probably due to sexism. His parents expect nothing from his sister. They actually expect OP to be successful and achieve. That's why they push him so much harder.
