My Ram truck is in the shop AGAIN...

My Ram 3500 needed the rear axle replaced due to the housing being warped from a bad weld job. Shortly before I bought it, the previous owner gave it a little too much horsepower while towing a car on the wheel lift spun the differential in the tubes, which took out the driveline, transfer case, and transmission. All were replaced, but the repair shop decided to weld the tubes to the diff to prevent it from happening again. Unfortunately they did a horrible job at it and bend the housing from an incorrect welding job. The only replacement I was able to find was from a 2008, which is a little different, but Jordan at Elite Fleet Automotive was able to do some mechanic stuff and make it work anyways.

Seeing that Jeep pickup caused me some nostalgic pain. I had one that looked exactly like that ... quadratrac, 403 or 401 engine. It ran like a turpentined cat. 1 ton suspension (rode like a lumber wagon). Burned up the transmission in it twice, the automatic it had was a weak link, even with "enhancements." Was still the newest vehicle I've ever owned. Got laid off, money got tight, I sold it to get the bank note paid off before I defaulted. It's one of a few vehicles I have had that I see in my dreams (owning it again) from time to time.

If you carefully mark the locations of the jack-stands on the floor than you don’t have to worry if the get bumped/moved. Something to consider is adding a set of Trimbren blocks to help out your helper springs. I ran a 93 GMC 3500 with a “sneaky Pete” wheel lift and later a 99 F350 with another Sneaky Pete “wheel lift” along with a “hidden” in-bed fold-out wreck tow-bar setups when I did repo, parking lot, and police call towing when I lived in Baltimore and I had tried mountain sized spring stack that just Road like 💩, Firestone airbags in the read, helper springs like similar to your setup and finally a buddy of mine who also in the tow business suggested I try Timbren blocks. When I finial bought a set I kicked myself in the “donkey” for not buying/installing them sooner because they did not change the ride of the truck unloaded but when I had a car on the wheel lift they stopped most of the rear end squat

One thing I seldom did was let a customer in my service bay. I found more accidents happen when said customer would want to help an then get hurt. Your friendship must be deep as money never made a difference... ten customers waiting to take your place was my attitude and it was right. So glad I am not getting up at four thirty in the morning to go to work and stay till nine or even after midnight at a few times.... the work is easy enough, its the every day, day and night, till the body screams no more.

Good job Jordan!! Because you usually do such a great job explaining things Casey I think you are mistaken on the cause of your rearend failure. Accel torque is applied thru the diff and then the axle shafts. Stopping torque is applied thru brakes to axle housing tubes to chassis. Your trucks original failure is from braking forces as opposed to accelerating forces. So, go ahead and mat the accelerator, just be careful braking with a load on!!! Have a great day!!
