My Secret Hobby that I'm not very good at - Airfix

I'm posting More Shed videos while I wait to get back out and about. This time, I'm showing you my secret hobby, which I try and do for fun. I am not a professional model maker.

Never give up your Hobbies. Just revisit them from time to time. I'm in my late 50s. Started building them when I was in grade school. Took some serious time off from them in the last 20 years or so. But picked up playing instruments. Guitar/banjo/fiddle & saxophone. Hopefully retired in the next 5 years? Will have time to do all my hobbies. Keep up the good work.

In the same boat myself mate - coming up to having more free time & will be getting back into scale modeling after a break of over forty years. On the subject of quality - one scale modeling KZbin channel host, I forget which one, said that unless you are planning to put your models into competition the only person you have to satisfy with your build is you, no-one else's opinion matters - & who ever tries to tell you any different has their head up their arse. Progress at your own pace & every day is a school day. Best of luck.

Thank you for those words, yes I agree on that. As I am a bit older now my hands are not so still and arthritis in my thumb joint is not helpful, but I am doing better than I thought I would, lol.. Cheers for this comment and watch... :)

So long as you enjoy it, it doesn't matter. Like anything you do repeatedly, you get better the more you do. BTW, the airfix model is the Hawker Fury, an older kit so well done with that..

I got back to model-making about 10 years ago because I can no longer walk without pain. Actually, I am rubbish at it, but I'm getting better. The only way to become better is PRACTICE, man, PRACTICE.

You are 100% right, practice always makes perfect. Once I get my teeth into making models I'm hoping I will get better, but I enjoy making them when I can find the time, I'm thinking the Mosquito will be my biggest challenge to date though... Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment...

I'm 69 and been modelling for years, still rubbish but it's so relaxing. A guy at a model show pointed out that for most of us hardly anyone sees the completed kits so who cares. Enjoy your hobby mate.

Built models in my early school days. Took it up again in the late 90s, abandoned it mid 20s and now im trying to finish kits off half built 20 years ago. I have however discovered all the aftermarket PE, barrels and figures I bought at the time. Its my planned retirement hobby now. Do the best I can and nobody in my house will be able to tell one sherman mantlet from another!.

Same here, it must be 40 plus years since I made my last Airfix model, I find the new acrylic painnts these days a lot easier to work with than enamel paints...Thanks for watching mate...

Same here. Last model I made was in 1995. After retiring last year, I FINALLY set up my hobby room in the basement last January, and am working on my fourth kit. Interestingly, my first project was finishing a Pz 38t that I started somewhere around 1990! It was 3/4 done when I packed it up because I got mad about something that was wrong with it. 34 years later I did some on-line research, fixed the issue, and finished it.

@@bobd5197 Yes, I find KZbin is good when I'm struggling. Going to be semi-retiring this December rather than full on, but the way things are at work I might change my mind on that... A 34 year build!! Lol, that must go in the record books... ;)

Great video! I grew up with Meccano, Lego and Airfix kits too. I think the silver bi-plane is an Airfix Hawker Demon. I managed to rescue several of my kits and my brother's when our parents house was sold. These are now tucked away for restoration and repair, which amounts to one or two a year however it's still fun and the memories come straight back. Cheers!

Thank you. I made a few back in the 1970s when I had enough pocket money to buy them. I mostly stuck everything with glue rather than the model, lol. But now I am enjoying the challenge of getting the glue in the right place using the right amount, ;) Thank you for watching.

Made dozens of kits between about five and fifteen. So many great hours of enjoyment. While my mates were sniffing Evostick in the bushes, I was in the kitchen inhaling polystyrene cement with the blessing of my mum. Happy days.

Hi mate…got back into modelling after probably 40 years…I really enjoy it. There’s a lot of material available to us now that wasn’t around when I was younger and also the kits are so much better. I watch lots of KZbin clips for advice and tips and have learned a lot from it.keep at it and you’ll get there. Just a tip..don’t use stretched sprue for aerial wire, it’s out of scale and usually sags and looks bad..use fine sewing cotton , thin fishing line or you can get stuff online called micro line which stretches and is very easy to use. You glue it on with super glue.

I'm 56 and have built plastic models most of my life. I wish i had a shed to work in. I live out of a cargo van 99% of the time. I do build in the van and have a small traveling stash.

I have a model shop a half hour walk away that sells different brands of models including Airfix. I got my dad a model from there for my dad's birthday in July. I also collect policeman and army men figurines, currencies, retro games and consoles, and flags!!!!

The biplane model looks like an Airfix Bristol Bulldog. The plane itself dates from the 1930's. Nice model, I think Airfix tooled it in the 60's or 70's, in 1:72 scale.

LOL, I remember sending that Airfix. I never had Lego or Meccano when I was a kid. Did get a few Airfix but being a kid once I had made them, I played with them and broke them. I've been building kits (Mostly Airfix) since the late 1960's. I've never claimed to be any good at it, but who cares. As hobbies go. It's cheap and it's fun. You also get to learn about what you're building and engineering in general. It's Edutainment!

I've recently retired and got more time so i have got a handful of kits in the pipeline. I'm average too, no scratch building or specialist tools but its a good alternative to pass some time. Airfix is bottom of my list of manufacturers due to a problematic Spitfire build, ill fitting and missing a crucial part, emailing Airfix didnt help either. It was an old sprue pressing, so i now look for the age of the sprue tooling for after year 2000 on all future kits.

@@MOS6510Models Thankyou for the offer, very kind, but I have now finished the spit and don't need to do another one. I had to cut the pilots boots off to fit him in the cockpit and even add a cushion before doing that just so he could see out of the canopy. I have a Revell Typhoon and a few vehicles lined up - one is an Airfix truck tbh. Maybe offer a lucky dip to win the spit for one of your subscribers for xmas. I'm 47 and never stopped making model aircraft (making one now) but I did get back into Games Workshop/Warhammer Fantasy Battles about 3 years ago after not playing/painting miniatures for about a decade.

I believe those games are quite addictive, I also play games when I'm in the mood, my favorite was The Witcher 3. You get more satisfaction though from your models I suspect, I know I do, even though they are not that well built, I enjoy the making... Thanks for watching... :)

I think you can still get it, some parts have been replaced with plastic, but the company is still going, but like Lego, they come with parts partly made for building a specific model... Cheers mate for watching... ;)

good shout @peregrintokes2919 i think they rushed it out to market way to fast back in the day.. but they have kept the price very low on this kit.. mine is collecting dust but i will build it one day
