Of course not always, but at times, when you go into a somewhat expensive store, I notice that the sales associate tends to act a bit snobby. Like what is up with this attitude. You're just there to help the customers pick out what they need. You're not there flaunting your personal collection of high end brand items. What part of the sales associate job makes you think you're better than everyone else?

EXACTLY and the fact that she's a potential customer too! Like shouldn't you be wanting to be as nice as possible and as helpful as possible to a potential buyer so that they'll keep coming back? It absolutely blows my mind how rude they were

They spend thousands of hours designing and making the clothes, they spend thousands of dollars making this videos, photo-shoots, runway shows so that at the end of the day the SALES PERSON can ruin your whole experience at the store.

Right? The designer does all the hard work and impeccable craftsmanship until some sales associate ruins it for you. Some of them are so snobbish. Like I’m sorry, not to be rude but I probably make more money than you to be shopping in this store than working in it. On top of that I would like to have some premium customer service when I’m paying so much for something. Unbelievable

I was 38 when I got married, and yes, I'm quite large. When I went shopping for a wedding dress, the first sales person I spoke with asked if I was shopping for my daughter. I told her no, I'm shopping for a dress for myself, and she gave me a look like, "someone's actually going to marry YOU?!?" After a moment of looking me up and down, she said "We don't have ANYTHING your size." Got the feeling she couldn't imagine anyone my size even wanting a wedding dress. But I did eventually find a beautiful dress, MY size, and looked like a very buxom princess on my day! :)

I've gone into shops for a handbag and employees have looked at the size of me. I'm tall. Really tall. Their clothes are not going to fit me. I am well aware their clothes won't fit. I know they're biting their tongue but want to tell me that I won't fit their clothes. It's enough to put me off and ditch plans. Keep your flipping handbag, I'm done with you.

I dont get why sales associates in expensive stores would feel like they are better. I mean reality is that the customer can actually own and buy expencsive pieces of clothing while sales assistant cant afford it with his/her monthly wage. I would be depressed to sell clothes that cost more than my salary.
@LeksiW
@LeksiW 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe that's what it is. These people are depressed and fed up with the situation as you describe it. Working for the wealthy to sell things that cost more than their rent while they struggle to make ends meet has to be depressing.

These luxury stores products literally come off the runway so unless you're anorexic or a size 0 then you go into these stores you're gonna have that happen because the industry is bitchy and the worst industry to be in why do you think you never see models on the run way that have meat on them because if you're not starving yourself and anorexic you can't be in the industry it's always been that way and it isnt going to change anytime soon and the only time you see anyone that isn't a bag of skin and bones or even if they're plus size is in catalogues where no one ever really looks it's the way its been for decades

Fausta I can't believe your comment received so many thumbs up. It's sad really. One's value is not based on the amount of money they make despite what society says. When people look at it that way it suddenly makes sense as to why some commit suicide. I guess you must make a lot of money to have such a view. Just remember that life has no mercy and you can lose your money tomorrow.
@hannahb.375

Fausta all of the comments defending the sales associates are so dumb. I work at a brooks brothers retail store and the average pairs of pants for women is $400-$700 and lots of dresses are $1000 so the people shopping there are usually very wealthy and I don’t ever feel resentment or contempt for them and if you do you shouldn’t be working that job

I used to work at a jewellery store next to a Tiffany. I have to say, I got a fair amount of large ticket sales from just showing genuine kindness and treating everyone the same. The number of customers I had come in who had been at Tiffany, were treated like shit and so changed their mind and walked into my store was ridiculous. The sincere thanks I received was disgraceful, because it shows how poorly they were treated elsewhere. I made dozens of 12-30k sales in that store, which Tiffany could have easily snapped up before I even got a chance, had they not judged a book by it's cover.

it's really sad how people are still profiling the possible customers as if it were 80s and we lived in a "Pretty woman" movie. I've had bad experiences with shop assistants glaring me down and following me, I had the opposite reaction even if i was dressed the same. I guess some people can see you're determined to buy and will provide you with help, in most times, though, i got cut replies and were ignored even if i wanted to spend quite a sum. The thing with sales is it's moving mostly online and having bad sales person might cost the business much more than one can imagine.

Do not play the basic sales woman game. Always act confident and unbothered even if you're in "jeans t shirt" shopping at Hermes. I am from Paris and I can assure you we are full of those. Most of them actually want you to feel embarassed because they are kind of bored and get a high off of working in luxury. You don't want an opinion you want to try that damn blazer so next time just ask her with a smile to do her job or leave immediately.

Miss Management I have heard that in Paris..or in France in general maybe, you must not be too nice to salespeople. You should be a bit dismissive (but not rude or uncivil) and treat them like they're just objects of service. That way they'll try their hardest to offer you good service. If you're too nice to them they'll look down on you and walk all over you. Oui?

I was told by a sales assistant that none of the clothes would fit me. I grabbed my size put it on, walked to the counter, gave her the finger and said she can shove her commission up her arse. I went another day when those two weren't working and I had GREAT service. So I bought it and asked if I could talk to the manager for great service. I then slipped in the name of the two other ladies and was told that it was their last day and the were already fired for "unprofessionalism". Slightly happy.

I went into a newly opened "high end" gym with the intention of joining. When I spoke with the sales associate she looked me up and down then with a smug look she said that I would not fit in with the clientele that worked out in the facility. Without missing a beat I told her that I certainly "fit in" and that she was quite rude and that my medical colleagues will hear of this incident and would not be joining as well. I then asked to speak to management. Furthermore, I called the owners of the gym and relayed what transpired. The gym was apologetic and offered me 1 year free membership.

Everytime i go there to buy something for me or my girlfriend they are so lazy and give you this cocky attitude. I'm middle eastern so im brown in my skin but this is just another experience. I go inside the Gucci store, looking for a shirt and a jacket i really wanted and looked around for a bit. The sales assistants were literally only watching me and following me around... I asked them why they were following me when there were other people in there, and they literally fucking said "Oh its to prevent thieves, we do that to everyone"...

That kind of attitude won't get you anything. Moaning about an issue and then doing nothing about it will only perpetuate a broken system. If there's an issue complain, move up the chain of command if you have to. It never hurts to complain (about serious issues). In my experience if you really want something done about an issue turn to social media. I have gotten many problems resolved with companies simply by posting my issues on their Facebook, Twitter or Yelp pages. You just need to know how to word the issue, taking care to use wording that will trigger the correct response. Overly emotional posts will get you labeled as a crazy and they won't pay attention to them.

Many decades ago my grandfather got the ultimate revenge on a rude sales staff. He was in NYC and went into a Rolls Royce dealership to buy my grandmother a car. He was dressed very casually (he hated suits) and was ignored by the staff. At some point he was approached but only to be asked rudely what he thought he was doing there. Offended by the rude treatment, he left.....Then, to make a statement to the sales associates who first ignored and were subsequently rude to him, he bought the entire dealership, fired the sales associates involved, and later sold the dealership (minus a car for my grandmother.) I guess those people got the message “don’t judge a book by its cover” loud and clear!

@Luci K Yes they can, we (employees) get 30% off all year long sometimes even more. Balmain salary is around 3k + around 800$ monthly bonus if you reach the 100% target, even more if you reach 120% and I'm only talking about collective target not indivual target which also adds some money (depends of the brand, where I work I get 600$ if I reach my personal target) . Also you get plenty of stuff from the brand you work for like free uniform and free pressing (some brands like Dior even offer free hairdresser and free nail care once every month) so you don't spend too much money. If you do the maths they definitely can afford them. For exemple at a certain brand (can't name it but I'm pretty sure you'll figure it out easily, it starts with a L) we get 2% whenever we sell an exotic leather bag, I'll let you calculate how much we can win off a 15k$+ bag especially if we sell quite a few in the month.

It kind of sounds to me like they actually did know your size, but wanted to trick you into buying a much bigger blazer so that you would end up having to spend even more money for them to alter it for you. And yeah, on top of that they probably were just snobby and jealous that you could afford a Balmain blazer and that you're thin.

@@marieanne7569 I think they were flabbergasted at Sophie's attractiveness and her slimness plus breast size. I happen to be naturally slim and rather big breasted for my size, naturally. This people cannot cope with. My work colleagues in a job actually placed bets on whether they were natural or not. When I refused to answer, they assumed: NOT. It was outrageous and very very nasty. Another woman in a workplace was always looking me up and down and spoke with me in a very patronising way. She kept going on about the size of my feet. Well, they are big but then again I'm tall. What of it? She was always banging on about 'my husband' very pointedly as I was single at the time. I feel sorry for those people whose only way of feeling good about themselves is to try and bring someone else down. They're sad people.

I find women who work in designer shops are extremely stuck up. I had an experience in a shop where i had gone in to buy some specific items of clothing i had my eye on. Well the two assistants are talking loud enough for me to hear that i clearly don't have the money to shop there. I'm not their type of customer etc. Unfortunately for them they had a job vacancy up on window where it clearly states the wage is £7.00 an hour. I did point out to them if i'm poor to shop there then they really, really can't afford to shop there. At the end of the day, you're still a shop assistant whether you work at Primark or Balmain.

They looked rather embarrassed and i think they got into a bit of trouble as their manager and other customers had heard this exchange. The manager apologized and I did get 30% off my purchases so i was pretty happy with that. I still never shopped in there again though. If my custom isn't good enough for them then fine i'll go elsewhere. I don't know how places like that expect to make money when they want to chase people away, it's silly.

My surgeon once told me a story. He is quite small and doesn’t wear obviously expensive stuff. He went to Hermès to buy a handbag for his wife. He had decided to spend a maximum of $40’000 (Mind you, the man has 6 vintage Ferrari). The sales assistant wasn’t willing to give proper support and even told him, he shouldn’t look at a specific handbag because it was very expensive, not even talking to him about the budget he had in mind. He left and ordered the bag in a boutique in St. Moritz. That scene from Pretty Woman comes to mind, when Julia Roberts goes back to the boutique with all the shopping bags, telling the staff they had made a stupid mistake.

My father has a friend who is really rich, he just isn't the type to show his wealth. So he went to a showroom to get a car, we're talking top of the line, fresh out of the factory to the point where the paint hadn't even dried on it new. The dealer looked him up and down and tried talking him out of buying it, even suggested payment in monthly installments. He pointed at the most expensive model and said he'd pay in cash as he opened his little bag of money that he had brought him. Needless to say, he was treated like a king after that.

A little personal experience from me-When i was a teen i had the opportunity to work in a very expensive boutique with mostly clients of high class and even celebrities from time to time so i can say i have a little experience in this field . I always treated my clients with respect and kindness no matter how they looked and if they bought or not. One of the biggest mistakes in retail is to treat someone bad purely based on how they are dressed , their size and YOUR views about how much they are worth and be rude just because you are not i a good mood, this just shows bad skills , bad manners and non professionalism. My clients were gods and they were treated as such , thats why i made many regular customers and my boss was pleased and my customers were please to shop in a friendly environment . Not everyone is meant to work in retail and no matter if you are working for Balmain or the pound store you need to do your job right ,dont be fucking rude and dont insult people just because you have a bad day this is non of the client’s concern and at the end of the day your salary depends on them and this is what you were paid to do in the first place.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment Jonathan! 🙏🏽I totally get what you mean, and it’s annoying that people are quick to judge. I actually really like that edgy/polished look when you mix tattoos and piercings with a high fashion look. A friend of mine is HEAD TO TOE in tattoos, there’s not a place on her body she hasn’t tattooed....and then people hear her speak.. she has the POSHEST British accent. Like, you weren’t expecting that somehow! So many people when we’re out and about get taken aback. I think it’s cool though, I got a whole bunch of ear piercings last year and I’m already planning more and (maybe) a tattoo 😁 Keep doing you my friend and enjoy your shopping xx😘😘

The reality is that whether the store is high-end luxury or H&M, it's the job of the sales crew to get you to spend your money on their product. Ergo, you as the customer is the one with the power - even if you are in Hermes but have a Walmart budget. Snobbery on their part is completely counter-productive. Never ever spend your money in a store where the sales crew make you feel uncomfortable. They'll soon learn.

I always find it a horrible experience when I have to tell a customer that we can't go a size up, so I apologise that our store couldn't fit their need. When I give a customer a size that's too big for her or him I apologise for judging poorly, not bloody congratulate them ( unless they were dieting and working out to get into that certain size and they told me sure.) You should have called customer service.
@dexthepurpleduck238

That's the most backward-ass way to make a commission that I've ever heard. You try to convince the customer they look good in an item so they'll buy it; making fun of or mocking them is a good way to make them walk out without buying anything. She must not like money very much because if she had been helpful, kind, pleasant, etc. she could have made a sale.

I managed a lingerie boutique in Dallas, TX. A woman called me in tears one afternoon because a sales person in the lingerie department at Neiman Marcus, North Park handed her a plastic surgeon's business card. I sold her one of everything I had in her size...and we had fun! Just a note to those of you not in the know: back in the day (even as late as the early 2000's) commissions in retail could make one a very solid hourly wage of more than $20/hour on a 10a-6p schedule, which wasn't bad for a "starving" college student. Some people made over $100k/year selling stuff like china, haute couture, and women's shoes. Doubt if it's like that any more. Thanks for posting. People like this need to be removed from their comfort zones.

Not to offend anyone, but if this happened in the UK I wouldn't expect anything less. My mom is from the UK and we live in Canada (my dad and I were born and raised in Canada). Anyways, sales associates in the UK are rude af compared to Canada and the US. Whenever I shop in the UK I am appalled at the customer service and such. I have shopped at Burberry, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton and no one has ever told me I'm fat and I am bigger than you... Went shopping in London and experienced similar shit.

Hmm, I live in London & I really can't say it's common to be treated this way by any assistant born & raised here {& you can tell by their accent!} but there are A LOT of Brazilian/Portugese/Spanish {basically, immagrants} working over here in London, as assistance, who I find to be INCREDIBLY rude. It's so frustrating because you can almost always be dead sure they're going to treat you like shit, & it just makes me wonder why they even bother. Sigh... who knows. But if you ever find yourself being treated like shit, you should definitely report it, or speak up.

I went into Victoria's Secret once and had a saleslady run after me shouting "Ma'am, I don't think we have anything in your size here!" I let her catch up to me and I said "Does your perfume come in sizes now?" She laughed, somewhat self-consciously and said "Well, of course not." I told her "I'm here to get a bottle of perfume for my sister's birthday. And I didn't appreciate you yelling across the store that I'm too fat to shop here. I know that perfectly well." I have never been back to VS ever again. As a plus size person, I know the pitfalls of SWF (shopping while fat).

It's a nouveau riche thing. Nouveau riche wear their wealth as they are insecure that people don't know they have money. They therefore spend it on crap to show off. They effectively waste money on flash. Cover themselves with logos. Old money preserves the fortune and usually dresses down; buys quality garments but makes them last for years if not decades. No conspicuous consumption. Wouldn't be seen dead with a logo plastered across their chest or arse screaming at the world 'Look at meeeeeeee! I have money!" The little scrunts that work in these stores would know that appearance is not always an indicator of wealth if they weren't from the gutter themselves and had a wider view of the world.

This feels very typical for expensive stores. If you don't look like a millionaire they will try to make you leave instead of actually helping you. As soon as you walk in to those stores and you're not dressed from top to toe with expensive clothes, they WILL judge you - unfortunately. Maybe because they feel like you will not buy anything or are afraid that you might scare away the rich customers hahaha My dad and I were in Milan and we were looking for stuff to buy in those expensive shops, we're Bulgarian so we talked in Bulgarian to each other. In every single store, the staff followed us around and spoke Russian to us. We were so offended by that, especially my dad because he kind of hates Russia (because of communism you know) - and the staff were not Russian themselves (some were from Slovakia, some from Ukraine) so they COULD tell the difference between Bulgarian and Russian but nooooo they didn't care about that. They just spoke Russian to us, I don't speak Russian at all and my dad used it in school 40 years ago because he had to. I thought it was very strange that they basically had orders to speak Russian to any East European person walking in to the store. We did not like that at all. But we actually found a Bulgarian working in Bottega Venetta so that was nice, he spoke english FIRST and then he asked us if we were Bulgarian. Like a normal person would. I don't mind that people speak Russian, and I would like to learn it myself but it's really in your face when they do it in expensive stores - especially when they can hear clearly that you are not Russian. And Russia is a very sensitive subject in East Europe and the balkans. So these people should know this and not try to offend their customers.

My sister had an awful experience in H&M recently where she actually called me in tears afterwards she was so upset. A skirt she had bought had started to fray in the fabric but (important note) not at the seam. The actual fabric itself was fraying which is quite clearly a sign of poor quality. She went to return it to get a refund and the sales assistant refused to give her a refund because she said "she shouldn't have tried to squeeze into a skirt that was too small for her". I find it absolutely appalling that a representative of a fashion outlet would have the gall to suggest something like that when a) there was quite clearly a fault in the material and b) who the fuck says that anyways! It was so awful. Fortunately my sis is a strong woman and didn't let it get to her too much. Fuck you H&M 😡

This happened to me in, of all places, Victoria Secret. I walked into one of their retail stores and one of the sales people approached me and said "I'm sorry but we don't have your size." I've shopped in VS retail stores and online for YEARS so I do know they have my size but I was actually there to get some items for my college age daughter. I said, "I'm shopping for my daughter" and the salesgirl goes "Oh, Ok" like she was the gatekeeper and giving me permission to shop there. I have never stepped foot in their retail store or made an online purchase since then. I stopped all catalogs and cancelled my VS card. I'm certain they have not missed my patronage but whoever is the head of sales training of their staff has no clue what they're doing. One pet peeve is the sales staff chit chatting and ignoring the customer. What you've described is the worst of the worst. They are there to serve you and make you feel good about your visit. Period. As someone who was a retail manager then a buyer for a well known retailer, if I had walked into a store and found a group of my staff "congregating" the sh** would have hit the fan. I'm sorry you had that experience. Unfortunately the cluelessly cruel sales staff has no ideal how toxic their actions are to their brand's business and its reputation.

I've had a similarly unethical, yet opposite issue at VS. I'm a 30DDD and for years they would put me in a 32DD even though the band (which is the main support for a bra) was very clearly too big. Sister sizes are BS, and the bras would never last long. Now I have a few Third Love bras and I'll NEVER go back. The fit is still perfect (with the normal strap and band tightening) nearly 2 years in. Well worth the investment, and I'm about to buy a few more.

"You're congratulations is much appreciated. I've always wanted to be congratulated on my size by a sales associate who cannot even afford the clothes she's selling to me. Thank you." Then I'd have smiled, walked off, tried to find someone nicer who deserves the commission or just left. You should put snobby people like that in their place. They need a reality check and bringing back into the real world, especially when they're being snobby at people who can afford the clothes that they sell, that they can't afford.

+JayyRod Why do you want to know? Is my clothing preference important to you? Do you just want to make me look stupid for some reason. Sweet, it doesn't matter. Sales people do not get given free clothing just because they work in that store and as most people who work in these stores make nation minimum wage, the only way they can afford the expensive clothes they sell is if they live with their parents and pay no bills. Also, I've been Balmain and walked straight back out, same with Chanel. I've shopped in these places and been give a similar treatment.

+JayyRod End of the day,I don't care what people can afford, just be a nice person. I couldn't care if you're wearing primark or Chanel, don't be rude, don't think you're better than other people. This person is very rude and I've met a lot of sales people who are just as rude, if not worse. I hope you were one of the respectful salespeople. End of the day, is someone is rude and stuck up to me, I'll give it them back and see how they like the way they've been treated. Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.

Cece Cheung You're acting as if more money means you deserve more respect. So what if they can't afford certain things? What does that have to do with anything?

Don't worry about it.. The workers themselves can't afford a single Balmain piece and they act like they own the store 😂lol they are freaking helpers who are working for the few bucks they can make per hour! Let alone afford a Balmain Blazer.. The worker was down right rude and she should be reported to the brand for her ugly behavior and to chase away loyal customers!

I had a coworker who was very much like the 1st assistant in "the devil wears prada" and oh my god she worshiped the professor we worked for. funny think is, i was honest and no ass kisser so the professor valued my opinion better, took me to shop and to her home to help her with some work instead of her. Some people imagine that fake flattery will get them far and wide, the rich know how to spot them though.

That's kind of snobby. The point is that every customer should be treated decently. It wouldn't be OK for the saleswoman to shoo away a hobo with a broom just because he earns less than she.

I don’t know why people feel intimidated by shop clerks, or allow them to bully them with their snobbery... They can’t even afford the clothes they are selling. You are the customer, you are the prize!!! I walk into a store and if a store clerk had even a slight of attitude.... I will immediately look them up and down like trash, ask for the manager, and then cease all communication with the store clerk.... Explain to the manager the problem. Then finish business, and make sure to put the store clerk in his:her place before leaving

one time I was in in store trying on a very expensive underwear (bra) . So when I realized the cup was a little small I asked a girl who worked in there to bring me another size. she looked at me and said "you know, this size would fit you perfect if you'd loose a couple of pounds". My brain in that moment just freaking stopped functioning...))) I was shocked. I said something like "I think you should go buy a new brain somewhere bc yours definitely too small" omg ppl....who would say such a thing to anyone? I didn't buy anything and I actually went to manager and complained about rude service. I never went back to the store. So knowing now I need a bigger cup, I just ordered bra online and it fits perfect. end of story.

I had something even worse than that, I went to buy a party dress and I was literally kicked out of the store because I was too fat... Like the women literally opened the door and is like "We don't have your size bye." In your case you are not fat but in my case it was terribly uncomfortable and embarassing xD

+Sophie Shohet | Fashion Beauty Lifestyle why do you keep ignoring when people ask you which store this happened in? It clearly didn't happen in the flagship Mayfair boutique because they don't have curtains in their fitting rooms and have only been open for a year so the person couldn't have worked there for "years".

+Alonica Abad I don't see how it's harsh or rude. Many people have asked to know which store this happened in. It's not the flagship store which means it's a department store and therefore not Balmain.

I worked in a competition based sales thing once concerning tours and such. I remember a family from China who had tickets for the competition wanting some info but their ticket already expired. They were treated horrible by the company whose expired tickets they had so I helped them out. Turned out they wanted every attraction ticket under the sun so I sold hundreds of pounds worth of tickets and tours. They also waited for me the next day at my stop bringing bags of food with them (they owned a company) telling me they would come back with their entire family the following year lol. Such sweet people.
