I believe some countries have some kind of permanent residency permit allowing non nationals to live there without having to continually re-apply for a visa. I assume nothing like this is available in Thailand.
@semansco4 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. I spent 14 years in Japan as a foreigner and in the beginning there was some concern about my visa status. Thankfully there were stated guidelines for qualifying for a permanent visa for foreigners. Once you satisfy those requirements it is hassle-free for as long as you care to stay. You are allowed to work, buy land, open bank accounts, establish credit, leave and re-enter as many times as you choose without having to notify anyone. You are required to pay for national health insurance with a monthly premium based on your income. You are also required to fill out a form, pay a small fee and spend 30 minutes in a line once every 7 years. This "keeps the bad guys out" while allowing those that can contribute and have a desire to stay feeling welcome (sort of). This from a country (Japan) that is very xenophobic and below the surface very foreigner unfriendly. Not sure why Thailand would purposefully block useful individuals from spending money, creating jobs and working in professions that would help Thailand keep pace with the rest of the world. Thailand has everything to gain by allowing some foreigners to stay without endless hurdles to jump over. After many years of being here I will probably be leaving. I'll miss Thailand but there are other places that will treat me and others better. Thumbs up for this video :)

How do you comply with the new retirement visa requirements? ...I do have in excess of the insurance amount Bt40,000 out patience plus Bt400,000 in patience cover should I need it in my bank account in Aus if required but at 78 y/old I'll just self insure. Usually medical insurance is not available to 78 Y/old people. There does not appear to be any travel insurance available from any companies that will provide this bare minimum requirement to satisfy Thailand medical requirements, they do provide cover far in excess of the required amount with the corresponding additional premiums and usually exclude any pre-existing medical issues Travel insurance may include hospitals and medical cover as well as other things like volcanos erupting, being beaten up, your plane crashing or falling of a horse but not usually for pre-existing medical matters. For Australians and others where medical services are free In most cases, the travel insurer is only required to patch you up enough to get you on a plane back to your home country (USA is different). If upon arrival in Aus you will be entitled to free extensive medical attention all paid by the Aus Govt. Your travel insurance company's obligations conclude the minute you arrive back in Aus. They will make you go home if you can travel or your treatment will stop and no refunds. Medicare and Centrelink are linked to Aus Immigration, they will be advised. Travel insurers will not allow ongoing medical treatment in Thailand or other countries if you can be repatriated back to Australia or your country to continue treatment there, some times they will provide ongoing medical treatment short time if this is cheaper for them...read the fine print in your travel policy, all the travel insurers are the same for Australians... yes, no refunds. In concluding travel insurance is not much good for anyone wanting to get a retirement visa in Thailand and stay long term perhaps with ongoing Thai hospital treatment. Treatment for all accidents and illnesses is what is required. Have an accident or get sick and can travel this type of insurance will stop when you arrive back in your home country and can be very costly on an ongoing basis. It seems Travel Insurance is the only insurance cover that is acceptable in Thailand presently, it has lots of glitches. It is not much good if you wish to live in retirement long term in Thailand and receive ongoing medical or hospital treatment.

Even for a Thai entering the USA immigration will ask many questions and might not let them in. Don't understand why people complain about the Thai visa? and all the issue I hear about health insurance this is just normal or not? In Europe you need health insurance by law or they will put you in jail.

True. On the heavier side, it's THAT much MORE difficult to get citizenship in Thailand as a 'foreigner', especially if you AREN'T married. I wish other countries would exercise the same flex that Thailand does when it comes to citizenship. America is way too generous with citizenship.

THERE ARE NO HEALTH INSURANCE PROVIDERS IN THAILAND OFFERING THE BASIC COVER REQUIRED BY THAI IMMIGRATION TO OBTAIN A RETIREMENT VISA...it would appear to me that the present requirement to obtain a retirement visa in Thailand is that you must provide Bt40,000 outpatients and Bt4000,000 in patients. If this not so then I stand corrected. I am only interested if I can obtain the minimum insurance cover that will satisfy the Thai Immigration requirements. They indicate that is i.e. Bt40,000 outpatients and Bt400,000 in patients cover...that is all that is required to qualify for a Thai Retirement Visa. Plus of the Bt 800,000 visa fee. I am very much frustrated that even blind Freddie would know that this means exactly what has been said/stated. There is nothing I can see that suggests that you provide anything other than what is stated in the new regulations and this is the only way you can get a retirement visa. These pages are full of many offers from many insurance companies that clearly fall short of the requirements. Like too old, cover not provided, too sick not covered, pre-existing of all sorts of ailments not covered. Additional premiums with age etc. It may be for older applicants that the policies may only provide partial cover or not at all. (most likely). The objective is to compensate Thai hospitals if you are a patient or if you die they still get paid. It seems the Thai Government has chosen a path that is unachievable. Thailand requires that intending retirement visa applicants provide "Universal Health Care Insurance" for hospitals for in house treatment by an insurer up to the amounts stated where the premium is paid by the insured and the cover is comprehensive and all hospital debts incurred by Farangs are paid. Having been in the insurance industry in my younger days I believe most claims would fall within the Bt400.000 limit with a few over the required cover limit. We used to call this type of insurance "Personal Accident and All risks" or shortened to "All risks". I processed claims. Thailand's objective are, yes, unachievable and in view of all the exclusions contained in the 13 Insurance companies' travel insurance policies of medical cover provided it is significantly short of the objectives of the Thai Government. The requirements are Bt40,000 and Bt400,000. (yes, I keep repeating myself). Many of the policies on offer are for 5/10/20/30/50/100/million baht cover with a premium to match, we only require 0.4 million Bht to comply (Bt400,000). The offers presented by these companies far exceed the Thai government's basic requirements. sometimes by a hundred times. That sounds good but these amounts are unrequired to comply. All we have to do is comply? Universal health care is mostly only provided by Governments in a lot of countries. The USA has a sort of Universal Health Care offers provided by private enterprise, ( that's an oxymoron) the cost is often 10 times what similar treatment might cost in many Government administered health care funds in other countries and is a dog's dinner with a 100 million in the US with no cover whatsoever. (a few slow learners there). The premiums are too high. The health care providers there have money coming out of their ears. It's championed as "Free Enterprise"...wow. Even Mr. Trump. in a very recent speech castigated advocates of Universal Health Cover and stated that universal health cover was the objective of socialist and communists. Completely ignoring the fact that nearly all advanced first and second world countries worldwide with the exception of USA have very effective socialized health care and usually free to their citizens. Evan Thailand does for its own people. They now just want farangs to pay their hospital bill, and they have every right to insist on this, most farangs have never paid tax in Thailand and probably none ever will pay anything in the future...OK. I believe Universal health is the only way to go in Thailand's objective I believe presently is unachievable, if it's for farangs only, it's just too hard. Insurance for Medical cover in Thailand offered by existing Medical Insurance offers is very much short of what Thailand requires and what the customer needs are. Thailand and the medical insurers appear to be heading in different directions. Perhaps the only workable alternative is that Farangs will need to lodge part of the Bt800,000 visa application fee as a financial bond Bt400,000 or similar against incurring outstanding unpaid hospital bills. I'd be OK with that. If you don't require medical services in Thailand you pay nothing. Sounds good to me. If the existing insurance companies can't do the job well like the old saying goes " if you don't know how to cook the broth get out of the kitchen"

These fires here in Aus have been devastating. Lives, homes, livestock and wildlife have been impacted to the point where it is comparable to a war zone. If you are able to assist with a donation than please do so through a recognised charity or organisation.

Chuck, great video, as always. You got retirement nailed. I'll be retired in 3 years in the US. I hope that I have as much fun and peace as you are having in your retirement. BTW, the help you provide for those poor school kids, that is wonderful to see.

You will no problem with your extension. I am on a marriage extension which is a bit more complicated. I would like all your Subscripters to pray for rain in Australia. Cheers
