Please read! I make a ton of rules mistakes in this video. What you get from mixing tons of systems. I’m sorry.

Wanted to hop in here cuz it sounds like your wizard player might be pulling a fast one on ya. The 2nd level wizard feature 'Magic Sense' works like free detect magic--it allows you to tell if items in a room are magic, but it does NOT let you auto learn the exact nature or properties of a magic item---in the scenario you described, the wizard would still have needed to cast a spell like identity to learn the true nature of the chair. ;)

You all pulled off a great, clean, approachable redesign of the 5E core. My players and I love the Heritage system for adding nuance to character identity and some fun, but not overly complex boosts, to their capabilities. We just had our session zero/character creation meetup and it went well. Can’t wait to run our first full session as a first time DM. Thank you to you and the team at KBP for all your hard work.

Came in here to see if that's the feature he was talking about too. A colon would have been nice in the text to show that it was only talking about location. It also lets you know the location of magic things within 30 feet, so also can tell if there's things behind a secret door or illusion.

If it's a one off item like it sounds like it is you would probably need legend lore to tell you much more than the school of magic and maybe if you crit an arcane roll maybe planar teleportation since you are clearly a nice DM.

So I've only run three sessions, but I found no one was tracking luck. When I asked why at the end of the second session, it was mostly that when it overflows it resets to 1d4. In the third session, we house-ruled that luck just maxes out at 5, not that it resets when you get your 6th. This seemed to help a lot, and I feel good about it because it still means that you are wasting luck by not using it after that point, but it feels less punishing and lets you hold onto it for a bit longer to wait for an impactful moment. Makes it feel a lot more like a more common replacement for inspiration, and I think it goes better in our games since I don't ask for that many hard fail/succeed checks (I like the older 4E style with progressive rewards at certain DCs/WoD style where more successes an mean succeeding more), and I've been trying to reduce the number of casual skill checks overall.

Thanks for sharing this! I had simular experiences and I don’t think we are alone. That said, my players have now embraced the luck mechanic and like it.

Very much agree. I'm running a ToV campaign and it feels no different from "classic" 5e, in a good way. Great quality-of-life improvements, great presentation, no complaints.

In D&D 5e a 1st level wizard can cast Identify and know what an item does, there is nothing in the spell about level restrictions. It takes 1 minute or 10 minutes as a ritual if you don't want to use a spell slot. Any D&D character can examine a magic item during a short rest and know what it does. The only thing you don't find out is if it's cursed or not.

I've just begun running my own ToV game and I'm using the Tal'dorei Reborn setting. Session 1 is already played but the next one will only be in Sept due to RL stuff. I've had to adapt a few things, such as Lineages, Backgrounds and some subclasses from 5e to ToV, but it was easy enough.

This system definitely looks more and more interesting. My table is very invested in 3rd party 5e stuff so any expansion that still allows us to use it is amazing.

I think you'll enjoy the Monster Vault creatures... The creatures, on average, have less health then their 5E counterparts, but they have beefer stats, and they have more unique abilities to utilise in scenarios... So, you have tactical options with alot of creatures in ToV... Rather then 5E's "HP sponges", that think "difficulty" means more hitpoints or higher AC...

I think the biggest issue with Luck is that it's kinda just not super fun to use? Like yeah it helps buffer from failure to success and some players that mainly just play dnd will find it a passable system compared to inspiration, but I think it could really use more compelling systems that interact with it. Daggerheart gave each Class a unique way to go super saiyan or perform a super move by spending half the maximum of their resource (Hope), and Kids on Bikes uses determination just like Luck, but it has degrees of success so you can push from successful or mixed to a stronger version of success. Even Pathfinder 2E lets you spend Hero Points to say "I don't die". I can see a version where if you spend 5 you get to re-use a Long Rest feature or turn a hit into a crit or something. Like the rest of ToV, it all *works* but it could use *spice* to compare to all the other faster heroic fantasy TTRPGs right now

LUCK System: Did you give them a special colored d4 so they can track their luck and if they get to 4 points they know they have to use it?

One thing I don't understand is the spear having the pull option when its range is only 5 ft. Am I missing something here or is that a typo?
@mattlazer9025 ай бұрын
Just learned the answer. The spear in ToV is supposed to have Reach INSTEAD of Thrown. It will be errata later. This means Pull will in fact work with a spear. Very exciting for spear users to have reach! haha

While I haven't played TotV , as a DM, I kinda find your critique about wizard instantly knowing what a magic item does ridiculous. What do you mean "you can't say no to your player" ,you're the DM, you absolutely can say no to your player, or impose limitation "you can only know what a magic item does if the magic item is under your level" (I don't know if magic items have a level in this) Alternatively , in my opinion : in a world where Wizard can just see a magic item and know what it does : obscuring techniques would've 100% been created. Either by blind sighting other wizards by hiding magic under more magic : like "It's a chair that makes you sparkly if you sit on it" , or simply by creating magic that can block identification until said blocking magic is removed.

My group have loved using the Luck system. The one change Ive made to it is to cap it at 5 and not have them roll to drop it down if they would gain more....that just seemed a bit overly fiddly so we dont bother.
@TheWayOfTheWott4 ай бұрын
the drop down system doesn't even work anyway. you can avoid the cap by just spending 1 point before you would gain one over the cap, so you can never overcap... well, unless the GM tries to reward you. then you can overcap and lose Luck. ...yeah, that system was NOT well thought out at all. I'm surprised how many people universally love it as written. have they not played long enough to have someone get overcapped by the GM?
@matthewroy81165 ай бұрын
My players LOVE the luck system. They do need reminders every now and then to accrue points but generally it’s very little work for me and a lot of fun for them. It especially helps on the nights when someone is rolling really crummy😊

Not sure you have read the Luck rules. It is incredibly simple, fail an attack or save, gain a luck point (once per turn). You have a +1 point pool, or cash in 3 for a reroll. It is easy, and requires reminding by the GM, and it is a positive spin, does a 15 hit, no but you get a luck point.
@MrTarrasque5 ай бұрын
I did, still we keep forgetting about it.

Ok, well if you don't enjoy something don't use it. Though, the statement here comes across as if nobody at any table uses it rather than yours. Plenty of tables find it a great addition to the game.hopefully you will get used to it.
@MrTarrasque4 ай бұрын
@MrBrianofarrell That was never my intention as I tried to being it a bit goofy and explain it further after I say it. It’s a ‘my table’ problem for sure and I think the system will eventually find a place in my games.
