This whole video was very simply explained, but I specifically learned about the concept of project controlling highlights their crucial role in keeping us aligned with the original plan. It emphasizes monitoring progress, managing resources, and mitigating risks to ensure successful project execution. I've learned that effective project controls are the compass that guides us through the complexities of project management, helping us achieve our goals with precision and confidence. Thank you for helping us.

You are very welcome. The 'how' of project management always comes down to two things: plans and controls.

Hello, thank you for the video. Do you have any suggestions or a video on how to charge project manager time on a project? Clients #1 complaint is PM costs being too high. Appreciate any feedback.

I don't really address this - although, Lindsay Scott touches on it in her guest article on my website: How to Start a Successful Career in Project Management Contracting - onlinepmcourses.com/how-to-start-a-successful-career-in-project-management-contracting/ The argument I would seek to make is for pricing on value - that is, the project should pay according to the value the PM delivers. Quantifying that, however - and agreeing the figure - is non-trivial! Maybe look at the cost of over-runs as a measure for the value a PM delivers in avoiding them. From the perspective of a former Big-4 PM consultant, we looked at the level of PM that was appropriate to the scale of the project and the politics of the client-side and then started from their standard fee. But, I do understand that smaller operations struggle with selling that level of simplicity! I am also tempted to say that the client who does not understand the value of PM services needs educating. The client who WILL NOT understand the value of PM services is one to avoid.

Well done! I thought you’d include leadership or interpersonal skills as those as critical for PM. But I guess they’re not exclusively PM concepts. As always, thanks!

Bruce, thank you. You are spot on. While leadership, communication, and other interpersonal skills are crucial for successful project management, they aren't really PM concepts. They stand on their own. Here I was trying to identify concepts from PM.

Thanks, Mike. A bit off topic of this video, sorry, but what can you say about the belief on the part of stakeholders that the project manager must be an expert in the project subject matter or content? As skilled project managers using project methodology shouldn't we be capable of managing any project? In my industry (Media and Entertainment Systems Integration) the project manager often ends up being a subject matter expert (SME) who has no emphasis on PM concepts that has simply been saddled with being accountable for things going well.

I have written about this a couple of times and I agree with you. Our specialism is Project management. Part of that skillset is making alliances with the experts we need to rely upon. We learn the basics so we can deploy the right expert at the right time. I should make a video on this!
