Definitely a giant suck. Moonswatch itself. It paints wrists. It's the worst of all s*, what changes? It may have finished the Swatch Group./ To simplify creativity turning into factory design is something else, a true sign of time, smth about AP, Casio, cheaper Swatch, Aliexpress parts. Not Moonswatch. Forget about it, it's an utter shame.

One of the first watch I bought with my own money was a Swatch irony, it was aluminum and I was impressed by the lightness of it, my dad had a good laugh: "200$ for that" (still laughing in his grave probably) I got a citizen Eco drive titanium a couple of years later and it was kinda proper, it was the spark I needed.

Thing is, traditional watchmaking is a technology long past it's usefulness. Quartz saw to that, so the industry had to reinvent itself as something else - no longer a need, but a luxury. As a result, prices went up to reflect this new position, which was fine as long as those prices stayed relatively attainable but in recent years they've soared. Rolex is no longer something to save up for to celebrate a milestone. AP, Vacheron and Patek are pipedream watches. Even entry-level Omegas have crept up and up. But with the 2008 credit crunch, the aftermath of the pandemic, the current conflict in Europe and what looks a major recession on the way, most people are struggling to afford life's necessities like food and housing. Watches are nonexistent on the radar for the vast majority - and it's this vast majority that the watchmaking companies need to attract if they want to sell enough product to remain in business. In the meantime, quartz watches have been replaced by smartphones that do pretty much everything. Walkmans used to be everywhere; now people have smartphones. The same goes for digital cameras, pocket calculators and handheld gaming consoles. So if they no longer have any technological relevance, and having repositioned themselves as a luxury item fewer and fewer people can afford, how can the industry now reinvent itself again? Moreover, is it even possible for most of them to do that without sacrificing the gains they made post-quartz?

@@garyboyle695 agreed, although the same argument regards being disposable and environmentally unfriendly could be applied to quartz watches. But the overall issue for traditional watchmaking still stands. There are more independent brands coming out than ever, and collectors are often looking to diversify their collections - but the industry as a whole, and especially the bigger brands and conglomerates, can't rely on the largesse of wealthy collectors because there's not enough money there to sustain everyone. The overwhelming majority of watch sales are to ordinary people buying their first (and often, only) watch. If those buyers aren't there, then the industry faces a genuine extinction event that would make the "quartz crisis" look like a minor blip.

In a survival environment or even war wrist watches are a must since you don't know if you can even charge your phone. Also I don't like pulling my phone from the pocket to just checl the time and it's easier to look at a wristwatch. A watch is a man's jewelry too and I love wearing something that is basically a tiny machine on my wrist

I am writing this wearing my moonswatch, and I can say that I am thankful for this because it opened my eyes to the wonderful world of mechanical and fancy watches. First I bought it just following the trend. Then I started checking reviews on this watch. So I learned that it's based on a popular omega speedmaster. And that led me to learn more about the speedmaster and other models and brands. Two weeks later, I bought my first mechanical watch. A Hamilton khaki field, and I am loving it.

I think Rolex's current situation (restricted supply, long wait times, absurd secondary prices) will put a lot of new watch fans off. To me, Rolex was the brand that you bought yourself when you achieved a milestone, and the blanket advertising motorsport, tennis etc wont let you forget it. Yet the reality of the experience is deflating; walking in to a dealer only to be told there's nothing to even try on, let alone buy, and you'll have to wait months or longer. That's where many people will just walk away completely, or others (like me) find another brand that actually sells beautiful watches and begin a relationship with that brand.

As for Omega’s Moon Swatch or AP’s latest call; it’s healthy to be open to new experiences, so long as the experience itself does not carry away the quality won by the hard work of time (no pun intended, of-course). Or, put in the way you would describe it: When Gordon Ramsay offers to bring hamburgers over for dinner, you trust that he is not thinking about stopping of at McDonalds on the way…

The MoonSwatch to me is a genuine breath of fresh air. Something fun and unique. What is not fun is Tag just sticking Mario icons on a watch or Seiko's Street Fighter editions. Swatch and Omega did more than sticking icons on a face. I hope this sparks a trend of more fun stuff from the industry but I'm not holding my breath.

Ultimately it's down to what people are prepared to buy at a price point. Moon swatch was a big brand logo and design in a fun housing, at a small cost. If it had been $1000 plus just how many people would have been waiting in the line to buy it, one wonders. The more the cost of the watch, the more we expect a serious watch! What kids (with money) like these days are... watches you can freaking get at MSRP without having to beg and/or wait for years! THAT'S what we want (not being a rich kid, but a watch enthusiast). I want a Rolex, AP and PP without the stupid way it's being handled right now. Give me a proper way of a waiting list by putting down 10-25% of the MSRP and in exchange getting a guaranteed spot on the production list. EXACTLY that's what me and thousands of others want. Not some BS nonsense talk and new models of watches made from unobtainium... EASY.

For me Bremont have pushed their prices up over the last 2 years to where they are too expensive for what you get and I feel they are not competitive against the likes of Tudor, Longines, Breitling and even Omega. They make all very similar looking models. With the Moonswatch the initial look was appealing until you actually felt and handled the watch and realise they are rubbish. I wish Omega would build on that hype and make some of their own moonwatch models, quartz with the funky colours I think they would be big hitters especially if the price was in the £1000-£2000 mark.

Well I don’t mind a little fun and quirk in a watch, but at the same time there is a thin line to keep it classy and timeless. I think we are going to see a trend of watches in general getting way cheaper and be even more divided into tiers than now, every brand will have a cheap alternative for their expensive aspiration watches just to keep the cashflow in these troubling times. I’m no market expert but that’s my thoughts on the future, unfortunately I think a lot of newer brands or resurrected brands will fall off

On a separate note, I hated the MoonSwatch but I otherwise don't mind this trend. Because that's what it is, a trend. At some point the pendulum will swing back to more conservative, comfortable and, dare I say it, stuffy watch designs. All that being said, the date window on the that sectorish dial on the Bremont Supernova is pretty unattractive. Why would I want pay that much money for what amounts to an homage to the worst design element of the Citizen Promaster Tough.

I think luxury brands are paying a smart game at the moment (not one I like though). They are all following the “hype” model that the youth are into at the moment, like you get with sneakers or Crypto assets etc. Perfect example is moonswatch or rolex which you pretty much cannot buy and sell above retail. However only the cool successful people in the world gets them so if you want to be cool and successful you better do your best to try get one. My personal opinion is that it totally puts me off and I think how can this be sustainable, but it seems to work for RM and fashion items like Jordan’s and Yeezys.

I think the moonswatch differs because they provide a similar aesthetic (arguably) to the heritage brand, it's kept at arm's length in terms of features and quality. It's a well executed PR move. The AP and Mario Kart examples come much closer to risking dilution of the brand's image and show a much clearer lack of direction from upper management. For decades, the watches have sold themselves. Now, forced to innovate outside of the mechanics of a watch, they're struggling. I do have faith that it'll all level out though. I also don't own a watch so my opinion is less than worthless.

The video raises a very interesting question. I am by all accounts a Millennial, barely but I still am. This places me not as a young professional, but in the middle of my career. Having loved watches my whole life, I could not afford them, a thought that stuck with me from my ramen eating days as a young working man. This all changed when I saw the Openback Moonwatch in Saphire, and fell in love. A love doomed as by default the price was too high without even seeing it. Then I saw the same watch, with a price advertised that made me do double take, the Moonswatch. The cheap bastard love child of the beautiful Professional edition. Sadly it can’t be bought, as there is no stock. So with my eyes opened I went shopping, and got a beautiful Longines, witch is now my pride and joy. Something to be said for going and seeing all the watches in hand at a reputable dealer, massive difference between staring at them on screen. That being said, without that Moonswatch, I would have always just remained an fan, observing and appreciating from a distance.

I think uniqueness will be a valuable commodity. So the future of watch making might be in two directions relating to customisation of watches. One approach is ordering a bespoke, high-end watch to your exact specification, and they build it for you. The other is to order a kit and assemble it yourself. You could get a watch movement, a case back, sapphire crystal, and a USB stick containing a variety of files to enable you to 3d-print different shapes and sizes of watch case. Imagine you may only need one movement, and you can fit it to different cases to suit your needs.

Majority of younger people I work with wear Apple watches with many functions, I had a conversation the other day that my watch only has one function and what's the point in that. I guess there is an attempt to reach the Apple watch wearer's with the watches you mentioned. Personally I share your opinion.

Concerning the $3k and $20k Mario watches or the Black Panther watch. The problem (if you want to call it a problem) is that we've become a society of man-children. People don't grow up and mature the way they did in previous generations. I'm in my early 50's. My office is loaded with collectable crap made of colorful plastic. Shelves of action figures, die-cast cars, sports memorabilia and so-on. When I was growing up in the 1970s, my old man had no interest toys. Today, I have friends that go crazy for Legos, while their small children are playing video games on the TV. Men collected adult stuff, like coins and stamps way back then. The few nerdier guys back then played with trains. So the $3k Mario watch is just a product of our times. Yup. They're targeting adults. A perfect example. Kevin O'leary of Shark Tank's favorite watch is a Speedmaster with Snoopy on the dial. My father would never wear something with a Snoopy on it.

(late 50s here) Yeah they did, and they were generally very miserable, pent up people who were terrified of not being seen as "manly" enough, (or feminine enough) few had any emotional bond with their family, men and women were handed a list of "acceptable" hobbies, and if you broke from that list or transgressed its gender lines you were considered eccentric if you were rich, or just nuts if you were poor. I'm still doing the same stuff I was doing in the 80s, but I just bought a PlayStation 4 for Japanese rhythm games. We have game systems, anime stuff, we go to amusement parks conventions, retro game shopping. None of these are "mature adult" activities. But I remember the "mature adults" of my childhood., they came home had a few "highballs" watched TV till Carson went off the air and went to bed. I'm into Hatsune Miku right now, the few friends my age don't get it, but I'm running out of time to have fun. Being "mature" is overrated, and usually a euphemism for too old and tired to have fun.

New watcher here (sorry). I want to make an observation about asking the customers what they want/make their own designs. It’s now a few years since I was pondering what would appeal to consumers in the field in which I make my living (which is tv but that’s not important to the conclusion I came to). I watch tv and go to movies and theatre and rock/pop gigs and what I realised that I want is the experience which makes me go “fuck me, that’s brilliant, I would never have thought of that”. As a consumer, I couldn’t possibly tell the producers/actors/writers/musicians what they could do to provide me with that experience, so don’t waste your time asking the audience. Incidentally, I have a Junghans Max Bill on my wrist at this moment, but a couple of weeks ago I was at the Frieze art fair and Breguet had a stand. I was very moved by how exquisite their watches are. So now that is what I want. I cannot afford what I want right now but I’m sure that one day I will be spending a lot of money so that I can own such a beautiful device.

All we want are top quality ( or what is considered luxury grade ) products at an affordable price Before Apple ( not a fan ) it was Nokia who dared to ask for 2000 usd on a phone made from glass and steel ( Nokia Art ) or even more, like Vertu line. Then the iPhone 4 came out at 400 usd and Nokia vanished. Now people stay in line for a copy of a speedmaster. I hope AP will release a superb timepiece for roughly 1000 usd. I'm part of the younger generation and honestly.. the watch makers should give a damn what this generation thinks. Old values getting more precious than ever before and the attitude of some youngsters can easily be thrown into the garbage bin.

My concern...to whom I will be inheriting my watches? The Apple Watch and the watch displayed by an IPhone are killing the need for having something different. IPhone killed the camera industry and is killing the need for spending in a watch rather than giving that money to charity...(that is what this generation believes in) so, bioceramic, cheap manufacturing, mass behaviour, fashion and overall hype and purchase experience is what new generations are looking for. My Rolex, my Tudors and my Omegas will probably be sold on ebay at the price I told my wife I bought them....

It's about hype and limited release, just like the shoe market. Scalpers seal the deal. Other swatch limited releases are the same...they sell out fast. It's just that people who never bought swatch never noticed.

I think that old and elegant brands should remain true to themselves and not have identity issues . I know that things change and culture changes as well .. I thought that the Omega Moonswatch venture was brilliant and fun...initially. I have since been changed by how the availability and mode of purchase issues . This on top of the Rolex mystery is too much.

I kinda disagree. The moonswatch success is the proof that young buyers are actually very much into buying luxury watches but when I was younger (am 50), an Royal Oak cost 8k, a sub 5k, you could go to Patek and buy whatever you wanted. Now, luxury watches are like unaffordable dream but are still dreams for one day. The moonswatch is a shortcut and often a first step for many. Time will tell

i think it is not about new generation. It's about global ecinomic crisis , which already strated and will develop hugely during time. When we are in crisis, brands should think how to stay relevant , how to compete between each orher for very limited paying ability of audience.

The luxury watchmakers are actually selling more watches than they ever have, so economically they are fine. It’s just those sales are coming from an aging audience, and the increasing prices aren’t helping appeal to younger audiences either!

The problem with the “luxury” watch world nowadays is that, Luxury, 50 years ago a rolex or an omega wouldn’t cost 1/4 of a normal wage earners income for the year , people could actually buy even the “luxury” watches with a bit of saving , I think what the moonswatch shows us is that there are alot of people who want to participate in the watch collecting and hobby but simply can’t so they have to settle for the cheap plastic speedmaster because that’s what they can have, definitely that’s not the case for everyone but I think the pricing of the whole watch market nowadays compared to what people earn is a reason to why the interest in watches generally is down and people rather get an apple-watch or a bracelet even to wear on their hand than a watch.

If you think about it, the first time your average next Gen kids looked at a watch, Daniel Wellington (yuck) was shoving itself all over their social feed. That DW is going to be their nostalgia. The watch that makes them say "Oh I saved up for one of those". An experience Omega/Swatch nailed on the head. I don't think slapping pop culture onto five figure watches will sell watches to the next gen. It's the watches that can create an actual relationship with younger people with a price they can actually afford thats gonna be remembered.

Demand is strong but new watches cant sell because they become too expensive amid supply chain issue and inflation. Brands decided to reach those customers who are left out by offering cheaper alternatives...like PRX and defy skyline to fill the void left by Royal Oak, moonswatch to fill the void left by the speedy, new superocean decided not to upgrade its movement to keep cost low, chronomaster sport to fill the void left by daytona, grand seiko to fill the void left by datejust... and even Rolex joined the game by offering the flash bezel on Pelagos 39 to fill the void left by the modern sub.

Watch brands pretty much became their worst enemies. They've jacked up the prices so they can drain old money. But now the prices are so high that new money has a hard time justifying the purchase when it's not even relevant to do so. Brands don't need to reinvent the watch. They need to reevaluate their prices. Otherwise, time becomes all brand's enemy.

With the price of luxury watches just going up and up ( RRP - wise, not grey), how many young people can afford them anyway?
