I saw this in the theater when it came out in 2003. My friend and I both took our wives, who neither like Terminator, but they were willing to do a "guy's movie" too. By the end of the film (with a nearly full theater), both of our wives were in stunned silence - as was everyone else - at the realization of how the ending was unrolling. We're trained as movie watchers that the good guys always disarm the bomb and save the day with seconds to spare. This time, none of that happens, and I give the writers, producers, and director a ton of credit for having the guts to make THIS ending. The movie itself was fairly run-of-the-mill, but to me, having the guts to pull off that ending is what elevates this film (IMO) a little higher than most will rate it. I rate it 7.5 out of 10.

I agree, I was kinda meh about the movie the whole way through, especially considering they literally erased Sarah Connor. Until the ending, where they truly did something different and unexpected. You watch the characters try and try and fight to prevent this during the entirety of the story, you expect John Connor and yknow, Schwarzy to win, but at the end, they lose. For a movie dating back to 2003, that's a true dare!

@@MARYWTHER 2005 the fog was a true dare. but this movie gets to much hate. the plot is fitting. The thing was that I kinda expected them to end it this way back in 2003. So my problem was that the execution of the idea wasn't very compelling. And I chalk that up to the fact that John and Kate had no impact on the end result one way or the other. They could've kept on heading in the direction that Arnie was taking them, and things would have played out exactly the same. PERHAPS the ending could've worked better if their arrival at CRS actually caused Kate's father to launch Skynet somehow. That sort of causality loop would give the ending a bit more weight instead of making the heroes into little more than interactive audience members.

The ending is great and elevates the movie. Although in retrospect it somewhat contradicts the theme of T2... In that one, future is what we make of it, thus it is never written and always in Flux... It depends of our choices. This one says that the future *is* set in stone and it will always happen one way even if we fight it. It's even heavily implied that John being the first boy she ever kissed was already destiny at work. So, yeah.

The irony of the time travel in this series is that every time a Terminator goes to the past to change the past, it locks into place a future where that Terminator has to be able to exist in order to come back and change it. Its like self fulfilling proficy..
@changsangma1915
@changsangma1915 Жыл бұрын
The war in the future that lead to destroying the core facility of Skynet is what causes Skynet as a last desperate measure to send a robot agent back in specific time to ensure its existence as a branch in timeline right before it gets conquered by the resistance. Thus the cycle repeats but not necessarily as a single loop rather a branching spiral that never stops.
@SunwardRanger83
@SunwardRanger83 Жыл бұрын
One theory about time travel is that it's impossible to go back in time because of the paradoxes it creates. You can't go back in time because you already weren't there at the time you want to go to. Instead, what you're doing is going to an alternate universe inside of the infinite multiverse, that's nearly identical to our own, except that you actually were at the time you want to travel to. Anything you do won't affect the timeline in your original universe, but if you stay in the new one you can see how events will play out if you change things. When you apply this idea to the Terminator franchise it leads to some interesting ideas. For one, the original John Connor that sends Kyle Reese back in time isn't fathered by Kyle, and his mother never actually dealt with a Terminator. Instead he was likely fathered during a one-night stand that Sarah had when her and Ginger went out, which is what probably would have happened if not for the Terminator and Kyle's interference that night. Another is that it could explain why John Connor is played by a different actor in every movie. They're each a Connor from a different universe so they each look different depending on what is different in that particular universe.
@brianegendorf2023
@brianegendorf2023 Жыл бұрын
@@SunwardRanger83 Yeah, there are several theories about how time travel works. The one that is probably the most annoying is that a different chain of events doesn't necessarily lead to a paradox. Its like someone recorded a movie on VHS, went back to the beginning, and recorded something else over half the movie. And yest SOMEHOW what ever is suppose to happen in the second half of the movie, STILL happens. Like fate is so strong, that you can make changes to the past, and some things might still be different, but things that have to happen, will..no matter what.
@kinagrill
@kinagrill 4 ай бұрын
Details may change, but history/time itself seem to auto-correct the timeline, at least so key-moments are retained. Judgement Day might be delayable but perhaps that's not something you'd want, since Skynet will have a technological development advantage, or perhaps people that should have survived in 1997 when the bombs fell have different lives now and the bombs that fall in 2004 kills people that would otherwise have been alive, etc. etc. A lot of the Dark Horse Comics have 'what if' scenarios of defunct timelines showing what happened if small things were changed, or like if John had been killed in T2... Sarah might have gone full cruel-technophobic and have the arnie-terminator aid her and they lead the resistance as a duo - all of it ending with skynet and the resistance both wiping eachother out.

With all the success that T2 had ('an understatement), the fans still wanted T3. Even after the ending (sad as it was), people were curious to see how the future could play out. It was originally planned as an prequel about the final assault on SKYNET, before Reese was sent back through time after the original T-800 and John knew that Reese was his father retroactively. Arnold was age 55 at the time of filming, earned $25 mil as the biggest check paid to an movie star ever and reshaped his body with the classic workouts that made him an bodybuilding legend. This was the last film he would make before becoming governor of California. A decade later; he was back with The Last Stand and Escape Plan (2013), Sabotage (2014) and Maggie (2015).

It's a good 'alternate timeline' where Judgement Day only can be postponed. I mean each movie can sorta be seen as their own timeline. Pre-T1 timeline has Skynet send back a terminator to try and kill Sarah Connor before John is born. Then T1 Skynet in the future from that timeline learns it's prior attempt with one terminator in 1984 failed, so it sends it's T-1000 prototype to 1991 as well as a contingency. T3 is where both prior attempts were learned to have failed so another TDE facility is used to send back the T-X. It could sorta make sense with it being a change upon change with each successive timeline repeat, so to speak. Compounding changes.

So glad you guys reacted to this one. So many other channels quit after 2. T3 is clearly not as good as the first two films, but that isn't really a fair comparison. Hard to measure up to perfection. I liked the inevitability of judgement day and I thought the ending was unexpected and ballsy. Nick Stahl was great and frankly Edward Furlong just did not grow up into a leading man type so this was a good move. Arnold was great and I thought Kristanna Loken was decent. Again it's hard to top Robert Patrick so think it was smart to just be different and maybe a little funny with the TX but also creepy at times. It's not like there wasn't humor in T2. I especially liked the action sequences and my favorite aspect is how well they convey the weight of the T-800. Definitely the weakest of the first three films, but entertaining and a good set up for salvation which I think is really good. 7/10.

But the tonal feel of every single terminator movie prior was about how there was a destiny of a potential future. even Kyle says 'one POSSIBLE future' when Sarah asks if the 'gunman' is a robot from the future with disbelief. It's like a prophecy that states 'should judgement day happen, John Connor will lead the human resistance to victory'. Not that 'Judgement Day is Inevitable' because about fighting against that predestined horror of a future and have the small successes. Such as the first movie is where Skynet's plot to kill Sarah in the past prior to John's birth is stopped and the future as seen earlier can happen as it should, possibly with an advantage to humanity cuz pre-knowledge and a chance to better prepare... and Skynet also accidentally ending up having the original T-800 leave behind what is needed to ensure that Skynet gets created in the first place, somewhat levelling the playing field to status quo once again. T-2 is all about 'well what if WE take the active role to try and change the future', and they seemingly succeed. I dun mind that Judgement Day is a danger that might happen cuz 'natural technological progress' itself, but that it's inevitable is just not what the core idea of it was or should ever be.

I didn't expect this one to rate very high for you both. I enjoyed it a lot. I think it's fair to say that Kristanna Loken was not quite on par with Robert Patrick. I would agree that no one will really come close to matching his intimidating presense from the 2nd film. I did think she did well though. As for a female terminator, I don't think it really matters if they are male or female. There's reaally no reason there couldn't be female terminators. I personally think that a female terminator doesn't have to only be the flirty infiltration unit. I rather liked the use of a femal terminator in this being much more powerful than the male one, especially one such as Arnold. Also the fact that Judgement Day was only stalled and not prevented,is not a cop out Holden. As the Terminator said, Judgement Day is inevitable. The reason is due to the events of the first movie. I also think you sort touched on this in the first one. John was born because Skynet sent a terminator back to go after Sara Connor to prevent his birth, so a guardian was sent back that would be John's Dad. John couldn't exist without this first action on Skynet's behalf. The question is would Skynet still "be" if he had died prior to when he was to become the hero of the resistance. It's a loop. I personally don't think there was ever any stopping Judgement day. Postponing it sure, but stopped completely. No. Not with how John Connor came to born. I don't think there was any stopping it. And it's funny to think that really, if Skynet hadn't sent back a terminator to go after Sara, John might never have been. However going back to what I said earlier, would Skynet still "be"?

I agree that judgment day is inevitable sortof, but not because of the first movie. But T2 only undid the chip from the first movie. Whatever caused skynet and judgement day originally was never really touched upon. So it would still happend.

Too bad the first female terminator was evil. We had to wait until Terminator: Dark Fate for a good female Terminator. Then again, what if a TX had been reprogrammed by the Resistance and sent back in time? That would’ve given the Resistance an edge against Skynet.

I dont like the fatalistic, nihilistic message of the movie, so yeah it very much feels like a cop out the sense that there is no hope for change of ones predicament actually contradicting T2 Theme and message. Kristiana Loken doesnt come off as intimidating, mostly because of the tone of the movie even Arnold was hard to take it seriously. A female terminator using flirtation as a weapon is what makes sense in the context , otherwise there would be no point to have a hot female terminator in the first place, the reason they look like human beings is to pass incognito long enough to kill their targets after all. I also disliked very much how they portrayed john Connor in this, he was more capable, competent, and with better emotional grip, as a 12 years old, in comparison to this version. Probably very badly miscast, but i also think it was poorly written, maybe to give Claire character the stage and importance instead i guess. Which is another gripe for me considering the overall story of the first two terminator movies.

I never agreed with or understood any of the backlash that T3 got. I always thought the female terminator and explanation of how the defense system became self-aware were quite effective. And the crane chase scene was incredible. But most importantly, the ending with Connor stepping into his role and finally becoming the person he always was meant to be; while judgment day was occurring with missiles raining down on the earth that all of our protagonists had wanted to prevent throughout the entire Terminator story with a huge reveal that it never could have been prevented, was especially moving. The heroes failed their ultimate mission (which is so rare to see in any film, TV, or literature for that matter). But the next chapter was beginning. That the terminator deceived them into safety so they could start that next chapter, under the guise of helping them to stop judgment day, was a great added touch. I did miss Sarah in this movie. But even that made sense and didn't negatively affect the movie much. So was T3 as good as T1 or 2? No. But was it an effective well executed movie in its own right. And a fitting, well done, very memorable closing chapter of the trilogy for me? Absolutely. It's the Return of the Jedi to ANH and ESB of the Terminator franchise. Only overshadowed due to the brilliance of its predecessors. But it didn't make me enjoy, appreciate, and love ROTJ or T3 any less.

If I remember correctly, that crane sequence cost around $12-$15 million to shoot and originally the producers wanted that sequence removed during production. Arnold pushed to keep it in and put up around $1.5 million of his own money to make sure that it was included. Mind you, Arnold received almost $30 million to reprise his role in the film. Also, not long after the movie was released, Arnold became Governor of California and actively began campaigning against violence in video games (not movies, mind you). A week prior to his becoming Governor, the similarly-named Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (the first of three video games based on Terminator 3) was released, where you play as Arnold's Terminator blasting away other Terminators.

The things I liked in this: - John without a purpose, running - the idea of a female terminator - the action scenes - I love that one scene with Dr. Silberman :D - Kate as future wife, and the Terminator who killed John - Judgment day is inevitable - Skynet becomes self-aware - John and Kate realising they were sent to the bunker to survive, not to shut down Skynet - John's ending speech The things I didn't like: - the female terminator was presented to look sexy for the male viewers, but she never took advantage of her appearance and no character ever reacted to her looks - some of the humor was off (although T2 was the first to add humor to the franchise, and I didn't like some of those, too) - the lore and the timeline gets kinda messy All in all, I like this movie even though it's not even close to the previous movies. Same goes for Salvation, by the way. Anyway, I can imagine that some of the problems in this one were the result of several rewrites of the script. I haven't looked into it, but my theory is that they probably had the idea of a female terminator early on and they were planning to use her looks to make her a silent assassin rather than the brute killing machine. But I guess later they realised that "wait... we won't have epic action scenes with that concept! Scratch that! But let's keep the breast enlargement scene in for male viewers. Fans of the Terminator are likely to be mostly men, right?" Also, the fact that T2 was even a bigger financial success than T1 was, and T2 introduced humor to the franchise, they probably thought: "hey, let's add in more funny stuff, the fans loved those in T2, right?" In the end, I think the main takeaway is that without the original creator's input, filmmakers are mostly clueless and they inevitably mess some things up.

Spot on. Honestly if they did a special cut of this movie with a lot of the stuff with the TX removed and replaced with some more eerie scenes of her just being emotionless and the humor overall toned way down I think it would be vastly improved. The only thing missing then would be some sort of Sarah Connor cameo, could even just be while he talks about her at the cemetery. It's a real shame they didn't do the Salvation with the same cast because that also would've elevated this movie.

Personally I think T3 is very underrated. It's sad that this film either gets outright dumped on or the whole "its not as good as 1 or 2 thus deserves no recognition". I think there are 2 main flaws with T3. The first is going too overboard on the comedy which also reduces how intimidating the TX could have been. I really think its the comedy and not the actress to blame on that. They should have made sure every time she appears she is unsettling. The second is killing Sarah Connor off screen. If nothing else they should have had a flashback since a mere cameo with Linda Hamilton would have appeased a lot of fans. As far as it being made just to cash in that's probably true at the time. That said I don't think it does an injustice to T2's ending at all. If you look at how scary fast AI is developing right now then the whole idea that judgement day is inevitable should be very believable to you. You can't stop the march of progress, it makes absolute sense that they only delayed it. I think it was a smart way of doing it and the movie leaves John exactly where he needs to be for the future war.

My favorite is Salvation. Even though salvation mostly takes its beats from T-1 I do like how it encorporates T-3 plot elements to make it an even more cohesive story with John almost dying because of the T-101, because in T-3 we are told John dies from the 101 model, but Marcus sacrfices himself to save him. They also took the part of them slowing judgment day into account and made where John isn't the resistance leader until after salvation ends. Probably because all of his generals he was supposed to be with in the bunker with were killed. Salvation is underated and honestly manages to tie in points from the previous 3 movies making it very concise overall. I cant really see plotholes in the movie and I think people really need to watch T-1 to enjoy it since it has an insane amount of callbacks to T-1 but overall I think it was a great continuation. Top 3 of terminator movies in my opinion.

Honestly, I'm just a Terminator fan boy. Even if yall didn't react to it, they are worth a watch.

20:07 got me off guard when you put the Kindergarten Cop scene about the daddy! 😂😂😂 21:53 there a few videogame about Terminator 3. In the game there's a level where how John died after this scene. There were no cutscene on how did the resistance capture him just the scene where he was being reprogrammed in the start of the story. Only the Third Person game "Terminator 3: The Redemption" did have it but the story goes very different.
