Vader telling Luke that he’s his father is the greatest plot twist in cinema history. It made people in the theater gasp in horror because Luke’s father and Darth Vader were thought of to be two different characters. At the time, there was no social media or spoilers so no one knew what to expect. Lucas kept it heavily under wraps where he’d intentionally write different lines in the script for every actor in order to keep it a secret. Only Mark Hamill and James Earl Jones knew it. Star Wars was the greatest thing about my childhood and seeing people’s reactions to this always brings me joy.

I saw this film on the first day of release in the theater, I was supposed to go to the first showing with a friend, but I didn't make it until the second showing. On the way in to the second showing of the film, my friend, on his way out of the first showing, saw me waiting in line and yelled out to EVERYONE "Darth Vader is Luke's Father!" Totally ruined it for me.

The great scene about the Yoda introduction, is that when you saw it in the theater you didn't know who Yoda was and actually thought he was just some crazy little character. But then he turns serious, and you realize he was testing Luke with the crazy creature act.

Every time you see someone new watch it the first time, you wonder if this is the time the effect is just not gonna hold up anymore and they won't be able to take him seriously. Then Yoda does his clown act and you get REALLY worried as they think "gosh Yoda is a lot goofier than I was expecting." Then....."I cannot teach him." The mood shift. A completely different character is revealed in an instant. I'm so glad Steph was yet another success for the legendary puppetry, voice acting and directing work in that scene :)

I love that there's basically four parties participating in the reveal at different speeds. There's Yoda who just makes a decision and drops the act. There's Obi-Wan who has been presumably "watching" silently this whole time responding to him a second later, agreeing it's time to put all the cards on the table. There's Luke, utterly bewildered, slowly putting it together. Then there's the audience who, if they were originals truly blind to the universe, might be figuring it out just before or just after Luke clarifies it, but in a pop culture world where they've probably seen Yoda before, are probably reorienting themselves to the "real Yoda" a little faster than Luke got there :)

My favorite movie of all time. Everything in this film is magical. The settings, the characters, the dialog, the music, the battles, the chases, the revelations… just great front to back. Liam, you do a great job answering Steph’s questions without revealing too much. And Steph, it was such a joy to see somebody experiencing my favorite movie for the first time. Hats off to you both. I 100% understand your skepticism. One of the reasons I wanted to start a channel was because I HATE fake reactions. I can’t convince you, but she didn’t know. Steph had a very different upbringing to most and she’s not a nerd like me. There are people in the world that don’t follow the geeky sh*t we love….which is why I’m showing them to her. I will never forget the day I cut school to see the initial screening of Empire on the day it came out. I remember the gasps in the audience at the reveal and my jaw literally hanging open. I remember walking out of the theater after it ended and the line of people that went all the way down the block and around, all of them looking at me asking how it was, and explaining to them "It was Star Wars times 1,000. Your head will explode" and the looks of anticipation on all of their faces.

Oh yeah, keeping from saying too much, too soon is heart wrenching! I saw this in theaters in 1980, and the reveal still gives me chills! No matter how many times I watch. Mark Hamill (Luke) looks different here, because he had a car crash before filming this. He needed some plastic surgery on his face and you can see some scars. Then they used the yeti plot to make sense of it.

ESB has always been my favorite. They’re all great but there’s something about the way ESB expands the story, creating this larger galaxy with more planets and creatures and it has that epic cliffhanger with the incredible reveal. It has the best quotes, the confrontation between Vader and Luke, training with Yoda. It’s just movie perfection.

It might even be fun to give your wife (who I'm guessing is an internal processor) time to process things and then come back to filming her reaction later and include that as the ending of your video. Or she could give a recap of what she's been thinking about when you start your next reaction. Or maybe not! 30:40 - So, the point of the torture machine that Han was just put through without asking him any questions etc, was purely just to cause Han pain, in order for Luke to sense it through the Force that his friends were in great pain. Vader was just setting the trap.

Ian, so you guys are British? You should watch Highlander the Series!! From the 90s!! I used to watch that every week in high school, it was the highlight of my week! It's the same premise as the movie, except in the series it is the cousin of the character from the movie, who was born later but is also immortal. Duncan MacLeod, he was born in the highlands of Scotland in 1592 and is still alive in 1992. He can't die unless someone cuts off his head! And when you cut off the head of an immortal, you gain all of their knowledge and skill. The series gets into all kinds of stuff that can happen to immortals....Duncan sleeps with lots of women, and learns lots of martial arts, and sees mortal friends grow old and pass away...each episode is about his life in Seattle or Paris or London, and he runs into another immortal and they show a flashback from hundreds of years ago when he first met the guy, and it usually turns out that the guy is doing bad things, so Duncan has to kill him, and an awesome sword fight ensues! You guys would love it. Duncan is played by Adrian Paul, who is a Londoner, but he tries to make his accent sound more Scottish when he is playing Duncan of the past. The character has a friend named Amanda, who was born in 800 AD so in 1992 she's over 1000 years old. She has an English accent when he first meets her, but in the modern day, her accent is American. 🙂

If you want a fun fact, according to Mark Hamill in some of his interviews, they didn't want the big reveal to get leaked before the film was released, so they actually made up a dummy reveal. During filming, Darth Vader was scripted to say "Obi-Wan killed your father," which is a pretty dang good fake. It then got dubbed over with the real line "I am your father" in post. In the meantime, only the writer, the director, and later Mark Hamill himself knew (and they straight-up told Hamill that he was the only one they were gonna tell that to, so if it got out, they'd know it was him).

In 1977, we had questions. In 1980, with the big reveal, we had even more questions! Keep in mind you started in the middle with episode 4, episode 5 is almost the end, episode 6 is the end of the story, kind of a backwards way to tell a story, George Lucas was a genius! Episodes 1-3 will fill in the blanks in learning the characters' backstories! When you get to episode 1, there is a very important blood test, I'll say no more. It should help you understand a very important part of the story. Star Wars was a big part of my childhood, it's fun rewatching it with people who haven't seen them!

Keep it in mind that we didn't have the Internet back then or any type of knowing if or when the next film was going to come out. We had to wait 3 years for the next one. I was with my brother playing with our toys on the living room floor with the T.v. on in the background when the trailer for the next one came on. It took us 2 weeks to get it on and recorded on our VCR. We watched it so many times before it was released in theaters that May. I share a birthday with George Lucas May 14th. These movies mean so much me and to so many people around the world. Love watching first time watchers because it truly brings back those feelings we had when it was our first time. It answers the burning question of how Anakin fell to became Vader, while also letting RoTJ complete Vader's arc. I'm sure I'm number 432 to write this but Luke didn't use the Force to get into that ventilation shaft after he jumped. Those little pipes in the side of the big drop were debris extractors. They constantly suck in air with sufficient strength to suck all substantial "trash" out that might be falling down the huge hole from somewhere. Luke got luck- strike that, "the Force was with him"!;) Also, I really enjoyed watching you both reacting to this, awesome! And, on the side, for me RotJ was always my favorite one too, when I was growing up.

RotJ as a kid for me too - I especially LOVE that lightsaber duel, even though I now acknowledge the three stage duel of Empire is equally good and sometimes better depending on your mood. (It helps to be an adult now and see Vader, increasingly inclined to obliterate Luke, as the ultimate punishment for uppity ungrateful children haha.) I just can't do much with Ewoks anymore though - out of everything in the OT it's the most blatantly and extensively "for the kids". It's not done BADLY it's just a tone I don't need in my reexperience of the story; Empire is all dramatic notes and no dissonance.

Liam, I really like Steph's reactions! As her being a first time viewer, she didn't know what was coming, and you as you have seen them as I have. I'm glad you didn't say too much so she could see for herself what was happening in the story. She had no idea that Vader is Luke's dad! I've know that fact since I was a kid when I watched Episodes 4, 5, and 6 on VHS as kid in the 80's(Yes, I'm old compared to you two) I digress, watching someone react to watching a Star Wars movie for the first time was cool, and she likes it! I like the scenes with Luke and Yoda on Dagobah. Yoda imparts onto Luke how easy and "seductive" the Dark Side is, when he in on Luke's back and has him doing doing the physical training. The Light Side is all about selflessness and helping others. She knows the difference now. I will definately watch you the video you make for Return Of The Jedi watch through/reaction.

Takes me back it does... This came out in 1980 when I turned 12, and I remember my family going to see it in a drive in movie theater, Dad backing the station wagon into the parking spot so we could put the tailgate down and sit or lie down in the back to watch the movie. We had pillows and cushions and blankets to sit or lie on for full comfort (and for my little sister, who was only 7 at the time, to eventually fall asleep on), and we brought a picnic basket of snacks and iced tea too. It was glorious. 😀 The twist at the end shocked us all, even my genius dad who was great at figuring things out (he was a mechanical engineer and loved learning how things were done and teaching me about it too). I remember lunchroom discussions at school for the next year or so about whether or not Vader was lying. Of course he was lying because the dark side wants to corrupt people and so the best way to do that is shake the foundations of their beliefs. Of course he wasn't lying because the truth of Vader being his father would be more devastating to Luke than a lie. Lots of things like that back and forth for months and they started up again when we heard the next movie was coming out. 😀 Having to wait three years between these with that cliffhanger doing the Sword of Damocles over our heads the whole time was BRUTAL! 😀 But so awesome. 🙂

Yoda explaining the Force, is the heart of Star Wars. Using the Force is all about belief. Belief in something greater than you, belief in yourself, belief that even one person can make a difference. That's why Yoda looked so disappointed when Luke stomped off. Yoda didn't want _prove_ that the ship could be lifted. He wanted Luke to believe.

Man, watching that with you and your wife who has never seen it before...so awesome. I remember watching Empire for the first time as a kid in the cinema with my mum and back then I was too young to get the intricacies of what I was watching but even then, what an amazing film. Return of the Jedi was my favourite. It's still a toss up between the two. When she asked if Leia was using the force...I had to smirk...she too is a force wielder and as a Skywalker, a powerful one. Later in life I realised that in Empire, Darth tries to appeal to Luke using his family ties to manipulate him towards the dark side, I guess in a way to save him from being killed, but in ROTJ Luke has learned a lot and does the exact same but in reverse, to bring his father back into the light. So epic.

I was 9 when Empire came out and loved it even more than the first one; Empire is still my personal favorite of all the films. I still have fond memories of seeing the original in 1977. My six-year-old self was amazed. My mom took me to see it more than once. Remembering the recently passed away James Earl Jones, who gave us the voice of Darth Vader. I also love the music, especially the Imperial March, what I just refer to as Darth Vader's theme. I love all the different variations of the theme in this movie. Little bit of trivia: The actor who played Admiral Ozzel(the one Vader kills even though they are not in the same room) played Adolf in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I saw that one in the theaters on my 18th birthday as a special Memorial Day matinee.

This has been said countless times but for good reason the Vader father reveal is the best twist in movie history because It completely changes how you view everything going forward for the rest of the Star Wars movies no other twist has impacted an ENTIRE franchise on this level at least in my opinion.

Great reaction. Edit was good. Quality good. Commentary - Excellent (I will not touch on the information/spoiler debate because that has been substantially discussed already). I enjoyed it immensely - definitely in top 10 of Star Wars reactions mostly because she obviously hasn't seen these and was nearly immediately hooked and vested. His doing his best to hold his lounge (or not in a few cases) was entertaining as well. I will just say, do the reactions how you want, you may lose viewers, but you cannot please everyone and as soon as you try to please everyone, your reactions become inauthentic. That was the word I was looking for - you guys are authentic that is what I like most of the first two star wars reactions. Stay that way.
