Fun fact! Godzilla’s roar in this was created by exposing dry ice to metal, with the bellow at the end from a potted plant raked across concrete. The roar was tested on The Rolling Stones speakers on WB’s backlot, and could be heard up to 3 miles, startled enough people to call the police despite it being put out that movie sounds were being tested.

Fun fact. Godzilla's screen time in this movie isn't any more or less than any of the other films as it's all about the same within a few seconds or a minute of each other, the whole way up to new empire. In terms of screen time, this is pretty par for the course for a Godzilla movie. He's never just on screen for 2 hours.

The reason why Godzilla was shown very little in this movie is because the director wanted to pay homage to the original 1954 Godzilla, where they concentrated more on the human character and the Godzilla scenes felt more special. This something they fixed on the later monstverse films.

Personally I didn't mind the build up throughout the film to Godzilla, they do a good job of generating hype and raising the stakes of the inevitable confrontation between the Muto and Godzilla, the small moments we get of them leading up to it makes you want to see it all the more. And the human characters, while not particularly interesting and actually kinda boring, were palatable enough that they didn't bother me, and the film plays things straight and takes itself seriously, focusing on the fallout of these monsters and the human attempts to deal with them. Unfortunately I felt the final battle didn't quite live up to all the hype; the editing between the monsters and the human characters felt really clunky and made you feel like you were missing out on the monster action and spending way too much time with the humans, and whenever it cut back to the monsters it felt like it was all too brief or I'd just missed a huge chunk of it, and when the fight's over I was like "it's over already?". You also realise that the time spent focusing on the humans starts to outstay its welcome; I didn't care about Ford and whether or not he got back to his family, or disarming the nuclear warhead etc. I cared about the humans in as much as it gave us a face to put on the effects of the destruction wrought by the monsters, plus watching them try and deal with them was interesting. The Japanese godzilla movies get this balance a lot better; I haven't seen Minus One, but regarding Shin Godzilla, the 1954 Gojira, and some of the earlier Showa era films, the humans are typically always engaged with the monster story, figuring out what they are, why they're here, how we stop them etc, that's what makes the human stuff engaging, it supports the monsters and builds up their presence, making the fights and the action all the better for it. Plus the Japanese know how to deliver on the action when it's time for it, rather than just cutting away as if almost reluctant to indulge in it too much for some reason like the American movies do. They got better at showing the action off in Godzilla vs Kong at least, too bad the human drama just got labotomised along the way to the point that it ranged from inconsequential to straight up annoying.

Exactly but watch people claim 10-15 minutes is too short despite that's the majority of godzilla's screentime in his films. It's not the screentime that's important, it's what godzilla does with it. Godzilla earth in total has the same amount of screentime in his trilogy (15 minutes in total across 3 films) and he does less in those 15 minutes than godzilla did in gojira who had 8 minutes or FW who had 13 minutes.

Jen, for context, Godzilla is an allegory for the nuclear attacks Japan suffered in WWII, it was a way for Japan to come to terms with what happened, in what you could say is a typical Japanese way. The story being that the nuclear tests and attacks created Godzilla. The Godzilla you saw in the 1998 film is actually completely disowned by Toho (Godzilla creators) as it was nothing like Godzilla should be, and is now referred to as Zilla, which also got killed in the next Japanese Godzilla film, just to make the point.

Maybe unpopular opinion but I really enjoyed the perspective from the humans, and the cutaways from the fighting. I think it made for a scarier perspective of how it would feel if you were there to experience the chaos. You wouldn’t be standing around watching with a perfect view; you would be panicking and getting glimpses of these massive monsters dunking it out lol the lack of Godzilla in the movie makes you want more of him, which I think is a better takeaway from a movie, rather than seeing too much pointless fighting (the fighting is cool fan service, but when extended, technically doesn’t add anything to the story and characters) Edit: I just realized, Godzilla Minus One got glowing reviews (from Holden as well), but Godzilla himself only has 10-15 min of screen time in that movie. Google says he’s in Godzilla 2014 for 10 min 30 seconds, so very similar in screen time for Godzilla between both movies…

The new Monarch show ties all of the MonsterVerse movies together in a pretty rad way, it's definitely worth a watch. Godzilla Minus One should be out by summer, Japan still likes to hold movies for 4-6 months after theater release until home release, and unfortunately typically don't release digital early like we tend to do here in the US. I just hope we get Minus Color with it.

You have got to show your wife the 1984 to 1995 Heisei movies! All 7 of them! Shin Godzilla and Minus One are also a must. Thanks for the video.

Godzilla 1998 was the film that introduced me to the character, and years later with Godzilla 2014 I fell in love with him, the film is not perfect, it is a 7/10 movie for me, but it was good enough to make new people like Godzilla, I would only change 2 things about this film, more 10 minutes of Godzilla scenes and I would leave the main character's father alive because for me he was the most interesting human in this film (and the franchise).

You guys should watch the tv show Monarch: legacy of monsters.. It takes place right after the 2014 Godzilla, extends this mosterverse lore more and adds more to it.. Its great imo, It came out recently on apple tv..

It should be mentioned that Gareth Edwards did this one as hist first major film after fun independent movies like end day or monsters. The latter might also be worth a watch! He had the intentional approach of highlöighting the impacts those monsters and fights would have on humans. If you consider it that way, I believe he did a great job. I can't wit for Godzilla 2, which is my favorite one so far. Skull Island will be cool.

Personally I like this movie the most out of all the new Hollywood monsterverse movies. When I first watched this movie I was blown away. It was my first real viewing of a Godzilla movie, having not seen any of the Japanese movies nor the first godzilla attempt. Really interested in what you two will think about the second Godzilla movie as that one is my least favorite by a long shot. Something that I think would be fun for both of you ignoring if it's even possible, is to watch a completely different take on Godzilla with the animated Godzilla trilogy (which is a hit or miss [mostly miss]) and the animated TV series which I thought was phenomenal.

In the first Godzilla movie ever and several after (like Shin Godzilla), Godzilla is a metaphor for something relevant to Japan and things they had experienced. The first was a metaphor for the Atomic Bomb which they weren’t allowed to make a movie about - hence why they created Godzilla to sidestep that rule - and Shin Godzilla was a metaphor for a natural disaster like Fukushima and the government failing to act in a timely manner.

When they did show Godzilla fighting the second time, it was clear that he wasn't doing well, so I had no problem with the cutaways and was fine only seeing some of Godzilla being hurt and then gaining the upper hand.

I remember watching this in theaters. It was pretty early in the day and it'd been out on theaters a while. Whilst I was getting the tickets for the movie, the ticket woman told me "you're the only one watching today", I was like " oh yikes" :I Got the whole place to myself though.

Even though there is little Godzilla shown, i love how they make his scenes feel special and make it seems super scary and intimidating. Love all MUTO scenes and sound effects as well. This scary vibe isnt present in other Monsterverse films which kinda sucks but also not really cause we all wanna see monters fight

I want to suggest again doing a reaction to the Japan-produced "Shin Godzilla" while you're doing this Goji marathon! One of the best iterations of Godzilla and a really unique way to tell the story of an event like Godzilla would be on the world.
