I’m not car guy and have never fixed my own vehicle before. However, pep boys wanted to charge me $800 to get the fan to turn off so I decided to man up and fix it myself. I followed your video and decided to replace the thermostat (not the sensor). The fans works properly now, the gage sits at 210, and the check engine light is off. Been driving my tahoe for a 2 weeks and no problems at all. I appreciate you sharing the video and saving me some money.

Just had the same issue with my truck, replaced it at autozone. Part only costed $60. CRITICAL: the fan and temperature are still going to have the same problems unless you reset the codes as he said, if you can’t do that, simply remove the negative terminal from the battery for 15 seconds and then put it back on. Fixed the entire issue for me! Thanks for all the help!

So my son drove his Tahoe home for Thanksgiving break from college and it of course did fine until late Saturday night when he drove home from his girlfriend’s house. He called me from the driveway saying that the fan would not stop running. The next day was today, Sunday when he is supposed to drive 2 1/2 hours back to college. He and I had to skip church. I told my wife and my daughter to say prayers. I had watched this video the night before. We changed both the sensor and the thermostat. Work like a charm! He’s back on the road to school right now and I think everything is going fine! Thx sir for taking the time and effort to put this video out! Tell your dog “Chachiko” (sp?) we all said hello!

Very similar issue I'm having today. My family and I stayed with some friends this weekend out of town. We had a 2 hour drive from there to get to church this morning. When we got to church and turned the (suburban) off the fans continued to run. I cranked it back up and noticed the temp gauge was only reading 160 degrees. Now I'm here missing church searching videos on what the source of the problem could be. I suppose changing both the thermostat and the temp sensor will hopefully be the remedy.

This worked perfectly for my 2015 Yukon with 111k miles. I had replaced the temp sensor 6 months prior and it stopped the fan issue, but it had recently come back once the weather got cold. I would recommend replacing both the temp sensor and the thermostat while you are in... biggest issue I had was finding my 10mm socket. I am NOT mechanically inclined... anyone can do this if you follow these steps. Thanks for posting.

Thumbs up for the video. My 2014 Silverado did all of this yesterday and I bought a thermostat and coolant temperature sensor. $67 for the thermostat and $17 for the temperature sensor at Auto Zone. Took about an hour to fix it this morning with the majority of the time wrestling with the hose clamps. Temperature is at 210F and all is well. Don't know which part was the culprit, but for the price of them it made sense to just replace each one while I was right there.

I had already replaced the temp sensor, no luck. Watched this excellent video, went and bought the thermostat. But I decided to scan for codes(I did not have a check engine light), cleared the P0128 (Error code P0128 indicates that your engine coolant temperature is below the thermostat regulating temperature. This means that your Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has recognized that your engine is running cooler than it's supposed to). After clearing the code, started the truck and went for a ride- no fans and temp started rising up normally. I may still replace the t-stat, truck has 117K so a new tstat couldn't hurt. But before you replace either of these parts, clear your codes...you might save yourself a little time and money. This all started after we replaced the radiator and power flushed the cooling system. I wasn't having any issues other than a very minor radiator leak. When I got my truck back I noticed the temp wouldn't climb and the fans were roaring on high- cleared the codes as mentioned above and fans stop coming on, temp rose to 210...back to normal.

Thanks for the informative video! I had the "demonic possesed fan" problem in a 2017. Scan tool showed the coolant temp rarely getting over 140F. I replaced both the TStat and sensor at the same time, about a 15 minute job. After, I realized my truck had been running cooler and cooler for a while and my mileage was dropping! 😉 I always had good heat, so I attributed it to winter weather and mostly short trips. I'm pretty sure the real problem was the TStat, but the sensor was cheap and easy enough to replace while I was there. Now the temp gauge reaches straight up and down and the fuel mileage has improved.
@MyClutteredGarage10 ай бұрын
Nice! Oddly I was noticing a fuel economy issue too. These new-fangled computerized machines :)
@nimrod275Ай бұрын
What was the fuel mileage difference you mentioned?
@misterbalsa9676Ай бұрын
When the engine runs too cold, the ECU will make the mixture overly rich, just like an old school manual choke. This can kill the fuel mileage and possibly foul plugs if allowed to continue too long.

I've always tried to do basic repairs on cars over the years. My Wife's 2015 Suburban had this exact issue. Temp wouldn't come up, the fans would stay on after shutting the truck off until the battery died. I ordered the parts from Rockauto, the thermostat and temp sensor. The fans stopped blaring away, I also bought a code reader and was able to reset the codes. My only snag was that I didn't seat the wire into the thermostat well enough, I had to re-seat it and the truck works great. Your video was clear, concise and well videoed. Thank you for this post, everything I read about this - you saved me a ton. I've seen average costs for the thermostat start at $240 alone. I'm sure the temp sensor was going to be another $300+. Worked for my 2015 Yukon XL with the 5.3 v8. If you replace the temp sensor and you're struggling to get it out like i was: 1. There's a gray sliding tab that covers the squeeze point to remove the electrical connector. You have to pull up on the sliding tab, which will expose the squeeze tab under it and then push on the now exposed tab on the to release the connector. 2. You'll need a 19MM socket wrench to unscrew the coolant temp sensor (use a long barreled socket as the normal short barrel one seems to be just a bit too short). The above steps should save you about 45 minutes of frustration.

I had the very same problem. replaced the temp. sensor and worked great for about a week. Then followed your advice and replaced the thermostat. Now working fine and warms up to 210 F just like new. So far so good we will see over time. I am suspect of the connector that engages the sensor, so I have on hand a new connector just in case I need it. Original connector may not be staying in locked position. Thanks for you help!!

Perfect video to explain and show repair. Seems best to replace both because of location and they work together. Seems if the gauge stays at 160 it would be a sensor issue, mine doesnt even do the gauge scan at start up.
@MyClutteredGarage8 ай бұрын
Interesting about the gauge scan. Did you read the codes?
8 ай бұрын
@@MyClutteredGarage no, nothing showing on dash and do not have a reader. I just figured, as with any computer stuff, reset and try again. Sometimes my factory radio needs reset and then its fine for months. I will see if it works over a period of time, if not I will let you know, but ya, all the gauges at start up do a fan scan and settle where current readings are. But when this was happening the temp Guage does not move during start up, so to me its all electrical, not mechanical. Ghosts in the machine
7 ай бұрын
@@MyClutteredGarage For a 3 week update. Working perfectly by just the reset. Still does the gauge scan "sweep" at startup as it should for all gauges. One way to see is put a manual temp gauge in for test and see if the thermostat, a manual mechanical feature that does not send a signal to a computer or gauge, only the sensor or wiring or computer or gauge itself would be to blame if the thermostat is opening and closing as it should. If the thermostat is stuck open or closed the gauge should reflect overheating or too cold it the other parts mentioned are working properly. On a Duramax we were reading low oil pressure,the gauge and sent a code. But engine sounded fine.....of course a "mechanic" wanted $2500 to replace the oil pump......I suggested putting on a mechanical oil pressure gauge and viola, we had correct oil pressure, we flashed the computer and it work for awhile.....same issue again......beings its all trial and error anymore beyond mechanical parts when it intermittent,we then replaced sensor......6 months no issue yet. It seems sensors and computers to tell you if the mechanical item is working fail more often than the mechanical item. Fun Fun.
