Does your 2014-2018 Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, Suburban, or Tahoe radiator fan keep running? Here are the symptoms: Fans keep running, air conditioner stops working, temperature gauge stops working or reads 160 degrees. The fix for me was NOT the temperature sensor, it was actually the thermostat. This video explains what may be the cause of the issue. Good luck!

I was about to ask for an update. Glad you’re ok but kinda bunmed because I have the same issue. I changed the sensor and had identical results. Gave up and took it to the dealer. Said I had a crack in my radiator. Swapped. Paid a lot. Then it happened about a yr or so later. (Now) But the exact same issue. Temp gauge drops. Tops out at 180. Few times it went to 210. If I’m driving and see the temp stay at 180 I think “it’s about to happen again.” Then as I’m driving I see the temp gauge at 160 and sure enough, fans are on and they stay on after I turn off the truck. If I disconnect the battery and reconnect, they’ll stay off for a week or so. I notice it happens when I go on long trips on the highway. Constant fear of it happening because I know I’ll have to disconnect the battery again. I’ll try the thermostat this time. Sorry for the long comment 😅

Excellent video, issue has been resolved. This was the 2nd time my Radiators Fans felt like flying. Also, since the fans were rev'd up, that also killed my battery. The first time, I took it to the dealership, and they could not recreate the problem. Several months later, the issue came back. Just replaced the thermostat and I noticed my gauge finally start working properly, THANKS!!

Thumbs up for the video. My 2014 Silverado did all of this yesterday and I bought a thermostat and coolant temperature sensor. $67 for the thermostat and $17 for the temperature sensor at Auto Zone. Took about an hour to fix it this morning with the majority of the time wrestling with the hose clamps. Temperature is at 210F and all is well. Don't know which part was the culprit, but for the price of them it made sense to just replace each one while I was right there.

This worked perfectly for my 2015 Yukon with 111k miles. I had replaced the temp sensor 6 months prior and it stopped the fan issue, but it had recently come back once the weather got cold. I would recommend replacing both the temp sensor and the thermostat while you are in... biggest issue I had was finding my 10mm socket. I am NOT mechanically inclined... anyone can do this if you follow these steps. Thanks for posting.

My 2015 Silverado was doing this exact same thing. I took your advice and replaced both coolant temperature sensor and thermostat as they were both very simple to do and this fixed everything. I also bought a diagnostic tool and it showed the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) error but said it was permanent and I could not reset it with the scan tool. However, after driving around the block the temperature came back up to 210F and it cleared the code and engine light - Thanks much!

Thank you for this video. Also I am glad that you and yours were able to walk away from that accident. Glad you are all OK and as the say the rest is just metal.. I just came across your video while searching for cause for the fans running. I have a 2014 Suburban and plan on swapping the thermostat to start. I'll let you and your viewers know how it turns out.

Thank you so much, I replaced the Temp Sensor first, but found that the temp only moved to 1/4, so I then replaced the Thermostat and the temp then reached 210. :)

This is my 2014 to a T. It's been riding at that mark between 160 and 210 for quite some time. I thought I heard my fans running hard a few days ago and it stopped. Today it happened again. Gonna give this a whirl in the morning. Great vid..will reply w/ results!

Worked like a champ. I too changed the sensor first because it was "easier". Made no change. Once a new thermostat was on it worked like a charm. I however did run into a small hiccup. When hooking my overflow hose back up as i slid the clamp down the hose the stem on the thermostat broke completely off. I had to dig it out of the hose and then return it for a new one. Guy at the counter said he'd seen it a few times over the years. Glad it happened when i was fiddling w it and not while cruising down the road. Thanks again for the vid!

I've always tried to do basic repairs on cars over the years. My Wife's 2015 Suburban had this exact issue. Temp wouldn't come up, the fans would stay on after shutting the truck off until the battery died. I ordered the parts from Rockauto, the thermostat and temp sensor. The fans stopped blaring away, I also bought a code reader and was able to reset the codes. My only snag was that I didn't seat the wire into the thermostat well enough, I had to re-seat it and the truck works great. Your video was clear, concise and well videoed. Thank you for this post, everything I read about this - you saved me a ton. I've seen average costs for the thermostat start at $240 alone. I'm sure the temp sensor was going to be another $300+. Thanks!!

Mine literaly just got stuck on for the first time about an hour ago after i.pulled into the driveway. My temp gauge was at 160, and fan was running wide open. I live in southern ky, and its pretty chilly outside. I have a 2016 chevy 1500 model. Glad i found this video. Also my temp gauge rarely ever gets up to 210. Its usually around 180, so tomorrow im replacing the thermostat.

I had already replaced the temp sensor, no luck. Watched this excellent video, went and bought the thermostat. But I decided to scan for codes(I did not have a check engine light), cleared the P0128 (Error code P0128 indicates that your engine coolant temperature is below the thermostat regulating temperature. This means that your Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has recognized that your engine is running cooler than it's supposed to). After clearing the code, started the truck and went for a ride- no fans and temp started rising up normally. I may still replace the t-stat, truck has 117K so a new tstat couldn't hurt. But before you replace either of these parts, clear your codes...you might save yourself a little time and money. This all started after we replaced the radiator and power flushed the cooling system. I wasn't having any issues other than a very minor radiator leak. When I got my truck back I noticed the temp wouldn't climb and the fans were roaring on high- cleared the codes as mentioned above and fans stop coming on, temp rose to 210...back to normal.

Thanks for your input. Counting cleanup and putting my tools away was just under an hour. I didn’t have to clear any codes because nothing popped up. The only indication was the temperature flatlined and the fan continued to run after the engine was turned off for about 5 minutes. Thanks again!
