If you’re on a road trip and the plastic tee on the medusa hose cracks and pisses out all the coolant while you’re driving, the visual inspection I did 100 miles ago doesn’t mean shit when my engine shuts off. A low coolant warning would have at least given me a chance to save the engine.

The only good thing with having a 1.6D Drive E except for the great fuel economy, is that the Fuel filter is super easy to get to and located in the engine bay, this is a good thing as fuel filters on diesels need to be replaced more often then fuel filters on petrol powered cars. The oil filter how ever is a b*tch to get to as you have to remove the intake hose between the air box and turbo to get to it (also on the Peugeot engine the intake and exhaust sides are flipped compared to the Ford and Volvo engines) you have to put in the new oil filter perfectly or the oil filter cap won’t go on right and you will have a nice engine oil fountain under your hood. Changing the cabin filter isn’t that hard if you changed a couple of them, i was able to do it for my first time on a P1 with out any significant changes, keep in mind the fact the i have worked as an apprentice at a Volvo and Renault Authorized dealer/shop. So i have changed a lot of Y2/P3 and SPA cabin filters. Renault are much worse when it comes to changing cabin filters believe me.

Indeed the oil filter placement is the most stupid thing i have ever seen, and has annoyed me for as long as I have had my C30 R-design 1.6d. But at least the engine comes to life with a remap as it pushes around 140hp and it actually pulls all the way to redline at 4500, which most diesels don't do.

100% the temperamental wires that lead to the boot latch and rear number plate lights. They are so thin that the use of the book alone will cause them to break resulting in you being unable to open your boot. Door pocket size on pre-facelift models, the clutch slave cylinder is fitted inside the bell housing with the release bearing, a full-size spare wheel doesn't fit into the trunk, and not every model came with a spare wheel, mine only got the compressor-fluid combo instead, the door carpets are glued very poorly, it's also true for the roof liner. I personally don't find the lack of the coolant level sensor a problem, none of my previous cars had one, but of course for the US market it's maybe a bigger sin :)

When my C70 battery died, it locked up the car like Fort Knox.. mechanical key would not work, key fob wold not work, inflatable wedge kit to pry open to pull handles from inside was a big fail as the locks were in a 'dead lock' mode and pulling the handles once or twice would NOT work. Had to crawl under, jump start the battery via the starter just to get into the car.. Love our car, but this issue is not intuitive.

Most of your gripes are with the quirks of the C30, 2,5 turbo, sunroof and needing new keys. Everyone who owns an S40 or V50 with other engines and no sunroof still being able to hold on to both factory keys are exempt from your complaints. And most of your general technical gripes with the P1 are most likely identical with the Ford Focus and Mazda 3 of the same lineage. So you're down to maybe 3 relevant gripes for most Volvo P1 owners. And those gripes aren't exclusive to Volvo's. But still annoying though.😅
@morpheus3190
@morpheus3190 8 ай бұрын
I have owned 3 P1s. I agree with everything you said. The other gripe is on my 05 s40 t5. No way to access transmission dipstick without getting underneath the car and removing two clamps that hold the ECU wiring harness. They routed this harness to sit right on top of the transmission dipstick and since it is held on with a clamp no way to get to the dipstick . Everytime I want to change the trans fluid or even check it, it is a major pita. Just pure stupidity. Volvo engineers are not very smart when it comes to ease of repair.

I used a GROM Audio kit in my 04 XC90. Adds Bluetooth, USB, and aux via the CD players optical sensor. Makes a little *snap* noise when connecting but otherwise works better than my buddys new Ford Raptor 😁
@VanillaLibrarian
@VanillaLibrarian 5 ай бұрын
Yep! There's the GROM MST4 and the Mr12Volt P600 which will work on a lot of P1s, but they are quite expensive, and they don't work on some of the 2004 models that don't have a CD changer. However, there is another beautiful piece of kit that should (almost?) always work... The bluetooth and aux modules sold by JustTech on Tindie. They are installed inside of the radio itself (a little bit of technical confidence but no soldering required), and they hijack the signal going from the disc reader to the radio motherboard. Two drawbacks: they do not display the track name on the infotainment display, and although the bluetooth module supports steering wheel controls in theory, the add-on board required for that is perpetually out of stock. However, an FM transmitter doesn't have those features either, and the sound quality is a MAJOR improvement. I have one of the earliest 2004 V50s that I considered a total loss when it comes to modern audio compatability, and this module is an absolute blessing.

@@ghostwrench2292 The green LED on the button can't be seen easily when you are driving... it's not easy to tell whether the fog lights are on or off... Why did volvo put a symbol for the rear fog lights on the dashboard, but not the front fog lights?.... Very strange!

These are FORD era ,P1 volvo obviously design with parts sharing with Focus and Mazda 3 . What would you expect from these Volvos design under Ford era ? Even the car designer left Ford for Electrolux The first generation P1 ,S40 and V40 sharing with Mitsubishi Carisma platform were excellent Volvo easy to maintain and very reliable indeed till today . Worn parts are easily remove and replace easily . Anything made or share with Ford technology or part bins are all useless junks lacking attention to details ,durability and functuality , Furthermore Ford does not give enough support to engineering freedom, funding and resources to produce good cars . Ford only provide big fat salary to CEO like the previous Alan Mullaly . Luckily I did not buy or touch any of these Volvos design and built during Ford era. What more can I say ? Nowadays new Volvos under new ownership looks so premium and high quality even the gear box come from Aisin ( Toyota) with bulletproof reliability for years to come. USA big three until today still cannot produce good quality ,reliable and good design cars. It is such a shame and sad to know that FORD houses incompetent designers , automotive engineers and production managers .

My biggest gripe is parts availability in Northeastern United States. If it’s not an archaic vehicle made by the big 3, then parts have to be shipped in from all over the US, Poland, Switzerland, Lithuania, etc. Very time consuming when you’re trying to perform repairs or preventative maintenance on these vehicles.

Not on US T5 P1 Volvos. No sensors and no warning messages. I’ve seen over a dozen of these driven dry and never having a warning message come up. Both earlier and later model Volvos gave warnings though.

Your a llar or the biggest f**l if you really work for Volvo and dont know this. No P1 5 cylinder worldwide market has a low coolant sensor due to it being a Ford Tank that did not have one. ( design fault) .They also tend to blow expansion tanks (Ford Unit) and blow hoses mainly the large radiator Octopus hose or the heater hoses on the firewall. The temp gauge will not move when this happens and you cook your motor.( design fault) due to it NOT BEING a CHT sensor in the head ,Volvo stuffed up and used normal temp sensor inside the thermostat housing that will read air temp and not coolant temp from a air pocket that forms when coolant lose happens, hence your gauge will not move.

I will say check the wires once in a while , they get toasted with heat inside the engine ,and cause unknown problems that a mechanic can screw you with different story . i think is time for timing belt replacement for me , and I'll be on the road again . cheers !!

The B-pillar / door length issue comes with a car being 2 or 3 door version. Any car that needs rear passengers to use the front door needs the longer door, it's that simple. Nothing to do with Volvo design.

I am not the original owner of my C30. The inside driver's side cv boot failed before 60,000 miles. The inside boot on the right side axle is showing the same signs of splitting open soon. Also, the coolant overflow tank will start to crack over time. I have replaced mine already.

I bought this s40 totaled in 2008 with 35k on it. When I started to put it back together I found that even the steering column is serialized to the car. The sunroof drains are junk. The cem has always been a pain. Left side of car doesn't unlock randomly. I gave it to my daughter and she replaced a dead battery while the key was locked in and probably on. Now there is a whine inside of the intake and nothing else. Not sure if the cem or ecu is at fault. My scantool gets no connection. I'm betting that cloning either one requires Vida software and an interface that I don't own. This car may be headed to the scrap yard.

Number 2 : The greatest idea to put only screen without radio on dashboard but the whole radio is somewhere else, so u cannot swap radio ( without pay around 300 $ ) with some preaty good and not much expensive radio. :/ Ooooo i will forgot, few days ago my fuel gauge just stoped glowing so i thinked that mby i will be able to just take it apart and replace bulb, BUT it takes me around hour just to take it from car and when i took it apart i saw that it wasnt bulb but led so i need to take it to somebody who can solder perfectly or just diagnose it...

I will also say, the location for the Turbo Control Valve..... On P2 Volvos, it's literally clipped to the airbox and is immediately accessible... But on P1 T5?? It's right on the turbo, and you have to remove a wheel, or go in from underneath the car to change it.

Oh, the interior filter isn't that bad. At least compared with the old V40. Yes, it seems easier, but it's a hell to get it back behind the dash and over the tunnel. Plus, getting the 4 screws of the interior panel out are a breeze. Getting 3 of them back in also. But that fourth one is a bitch-on-a-broomstick to get done.
