An older offices desktop computer can be upgraded quit a bit! if it has like an Intel Core2 CPU,, for like 17$ you can get an Quad Core Q6600, and with a small piece of tape you can even get 23,4% extra out of it. Charting it to use a 1333MHz FSB instead of the 1066MHz FSB that it is meant to run with.
Link to the Intel Core 2 Q6600 : amzn.to/2fNL8Bl

My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

Q6600 was my first gaming rig (lent to me by a friend), some can overclock really well, my mates was clocked @3.8G under water cooling but only managed 3.4G on a air cooler (got too hot otherwise). Nice vid, shame the QX didn't work in your board those cpu's were well expensive new.

The E6500 and E6550 and others you wanted to improve performance on, are I believe 1333 fsb cpu's hence no increase in performance. I believe they crashed when the pin wa taped is because they are coded to use the pin you taped to get the 1333 FSB. The hack on the Q6600 is a great one,as they are cheap and are compatible with most 775 socket motherboards. I have upgraded many computers using the Q6600 CPU. Now using your hack, I can get much higher performance too! THANKS!

what I would add - I did the 771-775 hack and went from a 3ghz Dual core to a Xeon quad core at 3ghz. I retained the original cooler - passive aluminium only and it ran fine but was hot - 80'c + under load. I stumbled on a Dell OEM heat pipe cooler - Dell recommend it for the Quad core. it has a copper base and heat pipe design. £3 on eBay and it dropped temps by 12'c under load ! Another point to note is that my board has an alleged max ram of 4gb....which is wrong - 8gb is fine :) Thanks Morten. All in I spent about £80 UK and have a quiet quad core :)

Morten, I got an HP SFF 8000 (similar to the one you have but with a different power button and usb ports) and got the chip replaced by HP, they changed the broken Q8400 3ghz and replaced it with a QX9650 3ghz 4 core 12gb mem 1333fsb and it works like a charm without having to tape masking it.

I wonder if the 2nd cpu was having an effect on memory access speeds, windows will bluescreen for many reasons, faster memory might help. With the very old systems there was jumpers for all the cpu program pins, bloody shame that everything is automatic now ;-(. Like your ninja mod :-D, very clever :-D

You may want to toy around with the LGA 771 to 775 mod, it's very easy to do and this Ninja Trick allows you to install Xeon's in LGA 775 Sockets. You will have to cut the two CPU aligning Tabs from the socket, basically the most difficult part of this mod as you can easily brick your MB if you bend pins in the process. Some folks cut the tabs away with a CPU in the socket to keep the debris from getting on the pin or keeping the bed of pin safe. Once the hold down bracket is out of the way you can easily cut the tabs with a utility knife and CPU installed. Then add the MOD Tape to the bottom of the CPU and you are golden. Not sure if both Mods would work together, but most LGA 771 already use the 1,333 FSB anyways. I used this 771 Ninja Trick on a Dell T3400 and installed the Xeon X3363, highest CPU for the T3400, with no bios update or anything. Needless to say this is one Rocking T3400. I think it does almost 400 or like 389ish in Cinebench R15, I forget as it's been a few weeks since last I've tested it. The LGA 771 and 775 are the same DIE size but the 771 has the CPU Socket alignment different but the Gold Corner Marker are the same; just line it up in the modded socket and you should be fine. Some LGA 775 MB's are Compatible with 3XXX Xeon's Series CPU's while others can use the faster 5XXX Series Xeon's. A very common 5XXX Xeon is the X5460 3.16 GHz and costs like 20 US now, give or take. It was cheaper until the MOD caught on, I paid 15 for mine and it's gone up in price since Mar 2016. Some MB require a bios update to work with the 771 Mod so maybe that might be the case for your mod as well. If you mentioned if you've updated the BIOS I missed it. It's worth a try to update the BIOS and see if it will accept the higher CPU's.

The Q6600 is a very common processor. This should be good enough as long as you have decent ram. A good way to get another year or so out of your Q6600 based machines for desktop / internet use. Its plenty fast enough for office use if you dont keep updating to the latest bloatware that is MS office, and stick with open / libre office or abiword. Hell I still have a pentium 3 that i use when i need 16 bit backwards compatibility and a real RS-232 port, that thing is "ninja hacked" too , it had an adaptor plate so i can put the later Tualatin P3 in a none Tualatin Board, i cries about microcode but that thing runs like a beast considering its age.

I know this is an old video, but have you tried using software such as Throttlestop to set the voltage to stay at your max VID? I use that when I do this mod sometimes, and that usually helps quite a bit. If you look at CPU-z, the voltage will fluctuate with your clock speed, and sometimes, if you can boot into Windows at least, setting it to max VID with Throttlestop will usually make it stable. If not, you can also use Throttlestop to control the multiplier and set it down a notch or two until you can run the test stable. My bet is the Q6700 would get a little bit more than the Q6600, but not by much. This stuff is all hit or miss though, of course, but 9.5x333 1.325V with Throttlestop would be my settings if I wanted to try the Q6700/qx6700 again.

You misinformed like hundreds of users in last 3 years asking this in comments, just because you don't know to find this information , while it was total logical, there will be similiar mods. Those SFF PCs had a very low power PSU inside. It could easily be that the Q6700 overclocked just simpli caused a too high PSU voltage breakdown. Or only the VRM was not capable enough. A slight voltage increase most likely solves such problems. (Usually, if you check the original datasheet of these type of machines, you will find, that the Desktop, or Midi tower versions support quad core CPU-s while the SFF ones do not. I have Dell Optiplexes at home)
@MyPlayHouse
@MyPlayHouse 4 жыл бұрын
The Q6600 and the Q6700 is kind of raded as using about the same power.
@gyulamasa6512
@gyulamasa6512 4 жыл бұрын
@@MyPlayHouse Well, the TDP of them are the same. However this does not mean, that their ACTUAL power draw is the same. TDP value is a worst case guideline for Motherboard manufacturers to show, which power rating the should design their VRM systems, and for CPU cooler manufacturers the same. In general, power dissipation is linearry proportional to the clock speed, and exponentially proportional to supply voltage. BUT! CPU stability is decreasing as clock frequency is increased. (you need higher current to flip the logic transistors quick enough, which needs higher supply voltage by Ohm's law. However, semiconductors are non--linear devices, so this is not 100% accurate.) That's why usually you need to increase CPU supply voltage, as you increase clock frequency. This means, that the original ratio between the two CPUs is 2666/2400= approx. 11% more for Q6700. So, if the voltage is not changed (which you cannot really do on this kind of PCs) the ACTUAL power draw will be proportionally, 11% more. But you have to change the voltage too, as you increase clock speeds. Since these motherboard BIOS does not provide any overclocking potential, you cannot run your Q6700 CPU on higher clock speeds (of course, hogy can increase the CPU voltage by actually messing with the HW, but that needs a different kind of set of skills) :-) So, if you have access to an O.C. friendly MoBo (like the Asus P5k series), you can repeat the test and I tell you, that you have a better chance to be successful.

Can you do a VID mod on the Q6700 in addition to the BSEL mod? Maybe the voltage drop with the BSEL mod is insufficient to operate the q6700. Note, the Q6700 is a 10x multiplier...so if you were to go to 1333Mhz that chip would go to 3.3 Ghz! Too bad if this is not possible. I can get my Q6700 to 2.83 Ghz using SoftFSB on a Dell XPS 420. However, I can get to 3.1Ghz with the BSEL mod plus SoftFSB with the venerable Q6600. Of course, new thermal paste is a must. Also, I bought the XPS 720 cooler and modded the XPS420 shroud to accommodate the third extra cooling loop of the XPS 720. (bought the fan, cooler, shroud of the XPS 720 for $10 on ebay!!!). Fun stuff with a a PC I've owned since 2008. Always monitor the temps and I keep the internal clean from dust every 6 months or so. Use two vacuum cleaners. One reversed to blow air and the other running to suck the dusty air as it is agitated away by the reversed vacuum cleaner.
