Some people (like me) take off a lot of intake ducting for their cold air intake. However, most of the time you'll find that a lot of intake tuning has been done by engineers to improve resonances and flow velocity to your throttle body. This will result in a smoother power band which might be more benificial than simply getting a little bit colder air.
@stevenfarrington23617 жыл бұрын
Exactly right. I wouldn't mess with intake piping until extra boost or replacement cams take your flow requirements outside the capability of the OEM intake. Very few cold air systems actually work because they are often based on guesswork and assumptions not science and testing.

Might not be so useless to say that temps here can go down to -25°C (-13F) quite easily. Are you REALLY sure you need a "COLD air intake" LOL :-) On the other hand they contribute for a steady flow of income. So let then mess as much as they can. ;-)

@@crpth1 what mod do you recommend and guarantee will boost my car?
@mikedenkinger9570 Жыл бұрын
After modding multiple M3's, heres my list to do AFTER YOU PAY OFF YOUR CAR NOTE!!! 1) Driver goes to high performance driving school. This will make you faster than anything you can bolt onto a car. 2) Better tires. I highly recommend Michelin 4S....especially if there is a "star spec" model for your car. Tires are literally the most important part of the car. Ask any real racer. 3) Good brakes and proper braking technique. If you dont think this more important than more power, youre probably a drag racer. 4) A tuneup: all fluids, filters, plugs and any suspension bushings. 5) A suspension that actually works for your street car vs a track car. They are different and believe me, you dont want a super stiff race suspension on a street car (I've done this. Learn from my mistake!). And lower doesnt always equate to better handling. Know this. 6) Cold air intake 7) Exhaust 8) Forged rims 9) Stickers that make you think that others think you made a race car out of whatever you're driving.

Only thing i would exclude are cold air intakes. Most newer cars from 2000+ already have a cold air intake stock. The airbox will have plumbing either into the fender or front bumper to pull cooler air. Yes if youre doing a turbo, supercharger, cams, etc then yes you will need a less restrictive intake. But for people who only buy cool rimz for their cars, a cheap muffler and stickers they should leave the intake alone

Fuel Delivery (Carb/SPFI to EFI/MPFI, Direct injection; upgrade from mechanical to electric fuel pumps too) 3. Exhaust (full custom exhaust; long tube headers, true dual flow, high flow cats, low baffle muffler if adding one) 4. Internal/External performance (stroke length, size of piston, intake/exhaust head work, camshaft, intake manifold for better airflow, material, etc...) 5. ECM tuning There is certainly a lot more that you can add that is more on the back burner but I include it because it does all tie in together. You forgot to mention flushing the blinker fluid every year, especially on used vehicles. Over time the pressure release valves will gunk up, causing engine damage and possibly engine failure. After changing your blinker and 710 fluid, you will immediately increase the longevity of your vehicle, and gain a possible 20-50 horsepower. Horsepower varies depending on engine size and toaster. If its a quad intake, usually they run around 30-50 horsepower.

Normally my first mods are gasket-march proting the head and manifolds, polishing where possible, porting and polishing the throttle body, making a bigger flap for it, a thinner head gasket... and then checking the air - fuel ratio making sure that there's no knock and the mixture is good with the extra air... if I'm really invested in the project I'd put in bigger valves a nice air intake and a straight pipe exhaust... ususally that gives me good gains for not much money, since I do everything by myself.

THANK YOU! I'm already working on the suspension. From your list in the video, seems I just need the headers and a ECU tune then. This information was very helpful and easy to understand and it's gonna make my decision making moving forward a bit more confident. Thanks again!

Hollis Page perhaps your fan clutch is engaged all the time, hence the horsepower loss. If it was working properly, there wouldnt be any difference from electric.

@alexvillalobos71377 жыл бұрын
DigitalYojimbo that depends on the car you have if you have a mini that shit could make good power with exhaust and chip tune. Subarus are known for getting 50whp by just using e85 the 335i could make 420 with a chip tune and exhaust
@reyperez34247 жыл бұрын
Alex Villalobos 335i don't make 420hp with stock turbos get your facts right
@alexvillalobos71377 жыл бұрын
Rey Perez yeah they don't make 420 lol they make 480rwhp and about 540tq but for sure not safe
@stevenfarrington23617 жыл бұрын
Depends on the car. Best starting place for a NA engine would be exhaust, but with a turbo engine would be ECU tuning of boost and fuel.
@patrickmorrissey22717 жыл бұрын
Really good video. Really good explanation. My only slight nitpick would be at the end.... You MIGHT have pointed out, that, if you do a cold air intake and a catback exhaust, (just for example), and THEN take it to a Tuner, they can load in a more aggressive tune, now that you have opened things up, and the car can breathe.... The tune they could do on a stock car would help the car, yes, but the tune on a car with CAI and Catback, would be a stronger higher performing tune.... So, some of the things on the list, work TOGETHER to get your car running the way you want.... Also, if you take the stock car in, get a tune... And then later, you throw a catback on it, you really should go back and retune it.... the tuner is going to optimize the car they have sitting there. So if you're thinking about a catback, you should really do the catback, and THEN take it to the tuner...
@lolzlarkin30597 жыл бұрын
You might as well just go full on stage 1, then if you want more power later, go stage 2. And so on. An ecu tune would be part of each of them.
@DENicholsAutoBravado7 жыл бұрын
Lolz, I'd rather go straight to the desired outcome. Some Stage 1 and Stage 2 lists involve replacing the same parts a bit more upgraded. Get the balance between power and economy that you want and go straight for it.
@DENicholsAutoBravado7 жыл бұрын
Patrick, I was thinking he could talk more about how different parts of the list harmonize as well, but honestly, it sounds like you and me are two peas from at least a similar pod. We have TONS to say on the subject. I even have a series on KZbin for "Port and Airflow Theory" for one of the subjects he covered. I only disagree with him on one point. Check it out. I have videos on my, "My Cold Air Intake and when I Heat Things Up", and a series on getting the most out of your spark. Come check it out.

The first mod of a modern car should be a way to flash the ECU with your own tuning data. After that, you can flash the ECU to support the air fuel requirements of the engine mods you make.

If you replaces the cams do you have to get the car tuned
@DENicholsAutoBravado7 жыл бұрын
Stage 1 cams? On my project car? No. Ideally yes. Stage 2 cams? You could get away with it, but you could have idling issues without a tune. Stage 3? Forget about it unless it's a race machine. It's only good for high revs and your car better not be made for the street anymore. Goodbye fuel economy (even in racing the idle consumption of fuel is important) and you MUST have the ECU tuned. I bet you'd like my take in intakes. Check this out, "My Cold Air Intake and when I Heat Things Up".

Cold stickers are better than cold air intake
@andrewbartleman91697 жыл бұрын
Ali Ben Ashour a true cold air intake that has simple path without many bends will be better than some stock air boxes with rubber corregated bellow elbows. intake baffles or cones in the tube and a pleated paper filter because the factory intake is an after thought . They use what room is left after they put the engine in and make it work not for performance but for cleaning the air and muffling the sound . But of course if you buy a newer car that is sporty /performance car it will have a pretty restriction less intake capable of the power it is putting down or even up to 100hp more. So buying a cheap cone filter and short ram intake kit will not gain power (hot air intake). True cold air intake that rake the air from in the fender or from another source is what we are talking about, they have their place and the stock box I had in my fox body obviously held my car back because when I got the aem it woke it up nicely. But of course it wasn't a modern car , still was a performance car of the 90s though.

Wouldn't polishing the cylinder head ports hurt the atomization of the air and fuel running into the combistion chamber?
@StaryWymiatacz7 жыл бұрын
fuel probably not , and definietly not in direct injection engines. Air... Is there even such thing as atomization of air?
@z33tanner7 жыл бұрын
Maciej Bator The fuel and air must atomize correctly (mix) in order to combust. Yes air & fuel atomizes.

Not if it's fuel injected only if it has a carburetor

I have a series of port and airflow theory videos on my channel. Check them out. I renamed one of the videos to something like port and don't polish to try to get it more attention, because while an illustrious shine sells, anything better than a 60 grit finish actually impedes air flow. The roughness literally makes tiny roller bearings of air that makes the rest of the air's velocity faster. Something that may not be in the videos, is that most 4 cylinder engines actually come factory with intakes which are too big, that's right, I said too big. So the correct porting job may include smoothing flow, but ADDING material for maximum power. the 2.0 Mitsubishi engine was an example of this in David Vizard's books - I've studied him a lot to make the videos I made, basically as a showing of what I learned from him and other engine builders.
@rushking197 жыл бұрын
DE Nichols exactly what I was about to say polishing the intake port actually hurts it, polishing the exhaust port is fine, also too big of a port is bad for velocity
