This is actually an excellent idea. I rarely use a whole box of crackers so this is a way to use up the leftovers.

Just made this. TWO actually. My familY of TEN, (eight kids) loved it. The trick is tos add the exact amount of water and definitely add the lemon juice. Then it gives it the apple. Taste! Believe me, I have special needs kids and picky eaters. The LIVED it!

My Mom used to make Mock Apple Pie, but she didn't use real Ritz crackers.... Back then in the early 50s Ritz crackers were much more expensive than their imitation crackers.... So my Mom's pies we called Mock Mock Apple Pie..... True story....:).....

That’s wonderful. My sweet friend Chris is allergic to eggs. I found a eggless chocolate cake recipe from gourmet magazine years ago that was a WW2 recipe no eggs. I make this cake for her every birthday!

My Mawmaw, originally from the Haleyville area, but then The Shoals, used to talk about making this when she was a kid. She also had family over near Sandusky (Pratt/Bham), closer to you. So seeing you do this is extra cool. I want to try it just because some doubted her. She definitely never did it with Ritz, just saltines.

My daughter and I made this tonight. It was a fun recipe to make together. It turned out good! However, next time I would not use as much sugar. It was really sweet!

My Mom loved to make these pies!!! Our neighbor LOVED apple pie and Mom made him a mock pie for his birthday. He said it was the best apple pie he had ever had and when Mom told him there was NO apples in it... well, I won't repeat what he said!!! Mom ended up making one in front of him to convince him and he still couldn't believe it! She left many crackers whole though to look more like apple slices.

Back in the day I taught Home Ec ... made this pie to introduce my pie making unit ... my recipe layered the crackers in a deep dish crust then poured the water sugar lemon juice cinnamon mixture over that ... add a top crust with vents and bake ... because the crackers were layered in the crust they looked like actual apple slices ... when my students ate it they argued with me that is had to be real apple pie because they could see the slices!

I tried this today. My crackers fell apart in pretty small pieces but it was delicious none the less. My mother was very skeptical of it but really enjoyed it too. Now we just need to try it with some chemical based topping.

Always wanted to try this, but too chicken. Recipe I have seen used saltine crackers. Thing I don't like about real apple pies....biting into apple that is crunchy, not tender. Yuck. So I thought this might be good. Thanks so much for sharing this. Now I want to try it, for sure.

My grandmother used to make an eggless, milkless, butterless cake - she never called it a depression-era cake but that’s what I took it to be. She enjoyed using the longer name. 😀 I wish I had the recipe! It was moist and tasted like a spiced cake. I think she might’ve put a simple confectioners sugar icing on it. Just can’t remember! This recipe might be close to it. www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/eggless-milkless-butterless-cake/
