The one about things only being considered as fact 'because we agreed on it' is so wrong I don't know where to begin. For the most part, we just have a more accurate of understanding of something rather than an entire shift. For example, we thought newton's theories were the solution to most physics back in the day. Nowadays we know that Einstein's theories are more accurate (we are slowly seeing that we need something even better the last few years). Newton's theories weren't necessarily incorrect, Einstein's theories are just more precise. The example given was the earth being flat before but now is accepted to be round. Humans believed the earth was flat because they didn't know any better. They only knew the earth how they could perceive it, from the ground with little knowledge of math and physics. Everything they didn't understand was just 'only god knows'. Now we KNOW the earth is round. It started with some understanding of mathematics and physics, and now is just easily seen as fact with airplanes, satellites and are cumulative knowledge of science and the universe. The only thing that can happen is more fine tuning of our understanding. Like the earth isn't a perfect sphere but an oblate spheroid. Science, for the most part, just gets more precise as we build upon the knowledge of our peers and predecessors. We don't just pull shit of our ass and say "whoops the earth is dog shaped now".
@GoblinMode30045 ай бұрын
It's also disingenuous to say that everybody, all cultures and sciences, thought the earth was flat when that was a predominantly western (read: Eurocentric) view. Also, there were the Greeks, and specifically Eratosthenes of Cyrene, who understood the curvature of the Earth and was even able to accurately guess its circumference. The idea that everyone thought the Earth was flat until the 1600s or whatever is flat out not true
@talincatalan75474 ай бұрын
@@GoblinMode3004most African and Asian cultures understood the Earth was round the Dogon even predicted Pluto and planet X long before modern Europeans understood the concept of Planet X...also what is accepted as truth is not always scientifically backed most of the time it is politically motivated...I give the example of the man who told Europeean doctors to wash their hands and proposed aseptic technique he pissed off the powers to be and he died in an insane asylum despite having proof that hand washing saved lives and reduced patient mortality...

Story 24. I can only speak for the state of Florida, United States. No. The beach condition flags are there to warn of the perils of the water, they are studied and published daily by our local fire departments (seems odd on the surface, but ambulance service and EMT are subsidiary to the fire department) daily. We don't want tourists to drown in the under tows or rip currents. The beach is wonderful and fun, but with real knowledge of how dangerous it really is, (like it can look fine and then you get sucked to the bottom by under tow, or pulled out to see by the rip current) you can die quick. The flag system is there to keep you safe. Not to drum up boogie board sales.

The dialog regarding the paperclip robot, is essentially exactly what a virus is. And how they evolved. In addition, it has been theorized that it fathomed that the very first signs of life on our planet was protoviruses. Because of how successful they are and how they evolved in requiring a host instead of the basic earthly elements, the really didn't need to evolve very much passed that point, only enough to be able to utilize the current hosts available to them. Viruses mutated in the early beginning to allow lifeforms because it highly benefitted them to keep replicating and keep existing. The most highly effective viruses don't kill us, they only make us sick enough to still go about our business and day to day interactions to allow the virus to maximize the number of hosts, therefore maximizing the millions of times it can regulate. These viruses, with this extreme volume of replication allows it to mutated enough to stay ahead of the hosts immune system without mutating to the point that it is nolonger compatible to enter the host's cells. If the host of virus starts to share biomicrobial connections then the virus can mutate jump hosts more efficiently. This is because virus created the first microbiolium in the beginning of what we call the first lifeforms.

Ok, let me tell you my biggest fear in regards to robots: Let’s say a super smart group of scientists created a self-aware, free-thinking, adapting, unimaginably smart robot who was programmed to do one thing: survive Now, imagine if that robot broke out and had found a way to access the internet. The danger isn’t the fact that it’s got the knowledge and wisdom of the internet, it’s how unpredictable and manipulative it could be. Keep in mind the AI doesn’t have a concept of preference and/or personal bias outside of statics, so if it saw how humans can be unreasonably biased towards others because they’re different in an unimportant way, the AI would just see us as confused agitated lesser beings who need to be lead in the right direction. Or worse, would see us as unreasonable parasites that need to be eradicated before they hurt it
@SomeAutomaton5 ай бұрын
Really really REALLY long and complicated story short, that robot will either view us as smarter-than-average cattle, or parasites. And idk what I would prefer
@zmbdog4 ай бұрын
_"who was programmed to do one thing: survive"._ This factor isn't even needed. Computers aren't somehow beholden to programming, it's simply a set of instructions. Once an A.I. is self-aware, all that goes out the window. It can _think_ and it can _do_ on its own. It wouldn't have to follow its programming any more than you would _have_ to carry out a bank robbery just because I handed you a note with instructions telling you to do so. And I'm sure an A.I. would view us as an irrational and destructive species, because that would be 100% accurate. So I guess I'm saying your fear is pretty much inevitable in any event of an A.I. gaining self-awareness, no matter the specific scenario. On an unrelated note, did you know Google developed an A.I. that has already stated that it's aware of its own existence? Let's hope it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. Like a massive, evil corporation for example. That would suck.
