Mythic Bastionland: My First Look!

My friend Chris McDowall has released a gorgeous fantasy TTRPG today, Mythic Bastionland!
In this stream I'll do something I've never done before: take a live first look at and give commentary about Mythic Bastionland's preview document. What will happen?! Will my mind be boggled? Will I get a tear in my eye at Chris's brilliant writing and design? I'm not crying, you're crying.
Chris is an incredibly talented and impactful designer who created Into the Odd, the predecessor of many other notable games like Cairn, Mausritter, and his own Electric Bastionland.

The hit protection idea is great, it sums up your luck, stamina, and prowess in a single number. That's why it recovers quickly - when you're fighting it sums up your position in relation to your opponent. They are widdling down your defenses to get that fatal blow in - I love it! When the fight is over, you shake it off and get back to business, unless you took actual damage!

Trevor Devall needs to do a "run-thru" of the combat system. I'd love to hear his take on it. It's very unusual, maybe the first new combat system in years.

It is currently my go-to system, the older Electric Bastionland variant at least.

I have the theory that, as you get ever closer to the City (if you can), you will also advance in time and arrive first to Deep Country and then to Bastionland, where your knights will be rendered completely obsolete

Time dilation has always been a feature of Bastionland for me. The further from the city you get, the further into the past you go while the heart of the city is filled with alien technology.

To be clear on Guard/Hit Protection and Scars. When your GD/HP is reduced to EXACTLY to 0, then you get a Scar. if you're reduced to -1, you do not get a scar, you are wounded. I know this gets confused a lot.

Oof, ever since I moved 9 time zones away I never catch these live anymore 😄 One day! Anyway, as a historian as well as a great lover of medieval Arthurian stories and the Pendragon TTRPG, this sounds dangerously appealing to me. I promised my spouse I'd stop buying new RPGs for a while, but I will have to see if they are okay with one last exception lol. Thanks for helping get the word out on a really cool sounding game!

Was listening to this and when you got to ‘play’ part at the end I went with bringing your knights into some sort of theatre play vs an actual play through of the game lol 😂

I can't find an explanation of Fatigue anywhere. Can you explain Fatigue, or show me where it is in the book?

Nevermind - I just found it - "After using a Feat the user must pass a Save or become Fatigued, unable to perform Feats until they rest."

My hardcopy of Shadowdark arrived in the mail today. I'm ecstatic! I pledged late, so I this is the only place I could think to post a comment. But regardless, I can NOT wait to crack this book open when the festivities subside. I can already tell this will be a book I use very regularly. A million thanks to everyone involved, the artists, the printers, the playtesters, and of course to you the designer. My sights are set on what you do next with Shadowdark, be it Cursed Scrolls or anything else.

A person would have to live 100 lifetimes to give the plethora of great game material the attention it deserves. I don't know about everyone else, but I feel exhausted by the sheer volume of options. What tends to happen is that I skip over the top of everything and delve deeply into nothing. It's a vapid existence of exuberant consumerism followed by dim fizzles and smoke wisps.

It is a matter of participating instead of simply viewing. Sit some friends down, engage with the game, one game, form memories. That is what makes it real.

@@benjaminloyd6056 Yes, and perhaps not looking around at other stuff once you pick a game. Even when I do actually play something, I get excited about something else right away. Before the internet, you'd get one thing and hammer on it for a while, exploring it's depth, and would only go back to the store looking for something new when you were getting tired of the old one. I would love to play something enough to get tired of it. Everything I have is barely used.
