BEHRINGER DEEPMIND 12 ELECTRIC PIANO SOUND DESIGN TUTORIAL ~ Synthesize This! Ep.14

Making an electric piano patch from scratch on the Behringer Deepmind 12. We're not emulating any specific electric piano (like a rhodes, wurly, dx7, etc), instead we'll be creating a generic electric piano patch which can serve as a foundation for building new and unique electric piano type sounds. With the right combination of filter, envelopes and playing style we can get surprisingly close even on an analog subtractive synth like the Deepmind 12. Demo starts at 14:18.

Anyone saying the deepmind doesn’t sound good is a deaf, stuck-up, short-sighted person. I have a Sequential Prophet rev2 over this mostly because I didn’t want to do so much menu-diving. But one day I’ll probably pick one of these up. Good job on this video👌🏼

Thank you so much for this vid and the B3 Hammond patch creation vid. I play base n keys. My main keyboard is a Nord stage. I bought a deepmind 6 (because its small and sounds amazing) to have it beside me so I can alternate instruments. I will rip some solos, add rich sound thickening pads and other creative stuff. The most heavily used instruments for me on my Nord are the E pianos and B3. I’m a raw beginner in ‘reductive synthesis’ and it will take a while to develop skills such as yours with tailoring patches. So straight away I’m using your patches as I’m writing new songs. I will be using the deepmind 6 on stage soon using the suggested tone adjustments to get the tone balance I’m happy with in the mix. Ive learnt heaps in the process. I hope Behringer are paying you WELL. (If not they should be!) 🤘 My band are moving in the prog metal direction. I’m ………. excited. The deepmind 6 is the instrument I hoped it would be for me. A robust reliable stage instrument. Some control lighting would be nice thou. PS, PEOPLE…. STOP MOANING ABOUT THE FAN. On stage it gets hot. Most pro amps use FANS for this reason. I’m thankful the fan is there as the instrument will much less likely to S#@T itself onstage. So Behringer, thanks for the fan. 😈🤘

@@onceuponasynth could you perhaps do a tutorial on how to create a sound similar to Tony Banks' ARP Pro Soloist sound in "In the Cage" by Genesis? (Or any of the Pro Soloist leads for that matter)? It's my dream sound and I own a DM12 but can't seem to get close to emulating that one :/ another suggestion would be Rick Wakeman's minimoog lead from songs like Heart of the Sunrise by Yes.. or any of these great 70s prog leads :) I'm sure you'll get many views for that one :) thanks in advance!

Liked and subscribed, nicely made video, just what I needed answered and confirmed. One question I had is, although I assume an acoustic piano is much harder to emulate, can you even get "in the ballpark"?
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 6 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the sub, welcome! An acoustic piano would be much more challenging yeah. You can probably in the ballpark but it will likely sound like one of those 80s keyboard emulations of a piano rather than a real piano. A ROMpler is a much better choice for acoustic pianos.

Hi, this is the best electric piano on an analog synth I've seen! It seems that (hard) sync is essential here. Do you think this sound could be made on a JD08/JD800 ? There are 4 layers and tones of wavetables but I don't know if there is the sync function. Thanks for your help!
@CarillonAudioVid

Sounds good. Will the DM12 allow key tracking to change the envelope times, so the higher keys sustain shorter? Also, can you assign the extra envelope to OSC2 level so the "tines" have a different decay?
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 жыл бұрын
Yes you should be able to do both those things (keyboard note and env 3 are possible mod sources and OSC 2 level and Envelope sustain are possible mod destinations). Good suggestions!

Thanks for the great tutorials. On the fence about a DM12. Are the envelopes snappy? Can it get quick percussive types sounds? Thanks.
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 жыл бұрын
The envelopes can can pretty snappy, at least judging by some percussive arp sounds I've heard. I haven't done any kind of comparison or detailed analysis of the attack time however. I've been using the DM12 mainly for pads so my experience with snappier sounds is a little limited. Sorry I can't be of more help!

at 15:30. do the jumps in the faders from the edit, accurately capture the changes you made (aside from effects) to get that tone. I've been trying to make a "debarge - all this love" like tone with synths and this is the closest. Planning on getting a dm12 soon also, is why I ask. Great work overall!

Are these synthesize this tutorials applicable to other synths besides the deepmind 12? Try to practice synthesis on a used Prophet '08 i picked up
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 жыл бұрын
For the most part they should be pretty universal. The DM12 is a pretty standard subtractive synth so most of the techniques should apply to other similar subtractive synths. The main unique thing of the DM12 are the effects, so you may need to compensate for that with external effects with the P08. And of course the filters will sound different so you might not get identical tones.

Hi. Love your videos man! ;) I bought a Deepmind 12 recently (not even a week) but I am having a little problem with it. While using headphones (ath m40x) through the phones stereo output, there is a constant noise if the fan level is above 35 (range from 0 to 255). The noise increases as the fan level increases.. and at value 35 is already at an impractical volume. It is as if the noise from the fan is going directly to my headphones. Connecting the L/R line outputs to my computer (UMC202HD sound card) and DAW, this does not occur. Does anyone has the same problem..
@graxjpg
@graxjpg 4 жыл бұрын
Miguel Carvalho the synth can be safely run without the fan on for a couple days. That being said, i have not experienced this issue (but others) with my DM12. I keep mine and other analog stuff on 24/7, with the fan on relatively low with no noise problems.
