Let's make a shimmer reverb effect and apply it to a pad sound on the Behringer Deepmind 12 synth. The shimmer effect was created by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. It involves a placing a pitch shifter in the feedback chain of a reverb. The important thing is setting a high decay time on the reverb and a +1 octave pitch shift on the pitch shifter. The result is a high pitched sustained tone that rings out as you hold notes which creates this lovely texture.

I just received my Deepmind 12 today and I’ve already made an amazing pad with some sample and hold on the pitch of OSC 2 with sync on, results in a modem like sound. I also added some shimmer reverb, thanks for the tutorial :) I’ll be sure to upload a video of it as soon as I get the proper connections to my DAW.

What also comes to mind is AphexTwin, Autechre...love it, really! The real advantage is: that just one sound can sound like a thousand sounds. I used to play like this, especially with KORG, since they started to take over Sequential Circuits...the KARMA-effects...these sounds seem to lead a life on their own...it's beautiful. Pressing the keys and immediately you have this appealing endless padsound...great! Seems like it grabs you by the throat and does its work...

THANX MY MAN !!! It was really Awesome to watch ! These kind of tutorials are GOLD for me ! I just bought the Grandmother AND the DeepMind 12 - which put my synthgear to a FANTASTIC sounding AKAI sx73 - a Microkorg, a Mikrokorg xl , a Roland JD-XI - and my two new synth´s , the Grandma, and the DeepMind 12 ! Youre playing here , makes me so elated ,- EVEN i have to get my sx 73 tuned up - its SERIOUS out of tune , after i lend it to a punkrocker musician friend of mine , who probably did unspeakeble act of violence to my Akai SX 73 of old renown - but it warms to know that the box in front of me just need to be opened , and ....THERES the DeepMind ! 👍

Nice work. You should do a pad bank .... once I get the deepmind I will be looking for libraries. I have played synths for 25 years or more and your programming tips remind me to take attention to detail, like keyoard amount. THis demonstration also shows the Deepmind in a good light. Reminds me of my old Juno 60 but more evolved.

Thanks for some great instruction with a combination of new ideas and traditional techniques. It's like a train - a programmer studying this video can jump off at any number of 'station stops' and have a really useful sound. At first I thought you were pushing it too far near the end, but no, the end result is staggering - with a touch of metal, a lot of variety (the subtlety of which the user can tailor to their taste) and your original shimmer reverb that takes on the character of whatever stage in the program's evolution one chooses to 'disembark' at. :)

You don't need to use a mod-slot for the lfo2 - tone mod I think. You can just go to the edit-menu for the oscillators and assign the tone mod source to lfo2. Don't have mine in front of me right now but I think you could do that, more modslots for other stuff! :)

Just ordered the DM12, I'm gonna be watching your video's to figure it out as it's my first synth! Great work man, you're awesome. I'm wondering if it's possible to play multiple patches over one another with the DM12 and edit one patch while keeping another playing the background? Or would I need to record into a DAW using an audio interface? Forgive me if i sound like I have no idea what i'm talking about because that's exactly what I am, haha

thx! The DM12 is not multi-timbral, so unfortunately you can't play more than 2 patches at once, so you have to bounce things down if you want to multi-track different presets.

Deepmind sounds always so thin IMHO. It maybe lacks a warm side (triangle or a sub, I don't know), it's never deep despite its name. You have such good sound design skills, explain very clearly all passages, and surely get out of this synth the very best it can do. Compliments!!

T.I.N Mateus - Deep editing, you're absolutely right, yet it has only 1+1/2 oscillator, which is limiting anyway. I understand Behringer has done a great job to keep the cost as low as possibile, I guess that's why they had to sacrifice a second oscillator (and/or different wave shapes).

Is it possible to make a patch that is 100% SHIMMER with no original signal sound?
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting question. I think you need some source sound because the shimmer is just a delay and pitch shifter so it doesn't produce a tone on its own. But you might be able to get the effect you want by making the effect 100% wet and maybe playing with the settings to try and reduce the delay between initial sound and shimmer (since the harmonizer is in the feedback loop it naturally will lag a bit). I haven't tried this myself but that's the general approach I'd go for. Good luck and let me know if you get it to work.
