It makes me think of street traffic sounds run through a blender on slow. Excellent sounds now I have to go fiddle with my DM12. Great inspiration!

Hey Toto, I don't think we're in the '80s anymore....your videos are immensely helpful trying to catch up to the modern age. Thanks to this one I finally got the idea behind the control sequencer and mod settings. If you ever have a few spare moments and nothing to do, would love to see how to set DM12 up for some of the "classic" sounds, like Moogie bits, brass, synth strings etc. Yes, I know that's very dated now, but then so am I....hehe. Thanks again!

Hey thanks! Have a look at some of my older Deepmind 12 synthesis videos I did a few classic sound design tutorials (including classic arp sounds and moog bass). But I'll be sure to do more. Here's a playlist of my other DM12 vids: kzbin.info/aero/PLyWVLB2iuZOPOFpxqc2MuTMYqYavw76oI

I really like to create an evolving drone and a percussive/plucked sound on my Prophet 08 utilizing a inverse polarity filter envelope and Envelope 3 to bring in the LFO's that alter the timbre in various ways. You should be able to do this on the Deepmind because of the handy dandy delay on your LFO's. That way depending on how it is played it can sound like more than one instrument, holding the low notes and rapidly playing the upper registers. By using an LFO to affect the resonance in a sample and hold manner, I have been able to achieve a twinkle-ing sound when you let go of the keys! You need to make sure the release of the filter envelope and the release of the amplifier envelope are relatively long and about the same. I really like the fact that the effects are on the Deepmind. This reminds me of the first synth I ever bought, the VA monster the Ultranova! Smaller keyboard, not analog, a teensy bit of menu diving, but at the end of it all, the sound is similar.

Watching this video, I decided that you have the necessary knowledge I was looking on someone to place a sound design request: Can you please make a video on how to replicate the famous "Laser harp" sound from the Synthex, on DM12? I've been trying to do it myself for the last 8 months and I'm as close as, let's say, 80% of what the patch should sound like. Now I'm stuck. And although there are many vids out there that show how to do it on many different synths, there is not a single video in the entire youtube universe that explains how to do that specifically on DM12.. thanks in advance for your time, I always cherish your tutorials.

Hey, must have missed your videos somehow. Now on board, they're awesome. I own many synthesizers both new and vintage. The D12 has become one of my favorites because it is so easy to navigate and adjust. I now own one keyboard controlling 3 desktop D12's rack mounted. I can tell you they all work wonderful together. Your videos are a bonus help setting parameters. Keep the videos coming!! Do you have any music you have written using synths? Thanks Rix

Is it possibile to build a generative patch like modular ambient music with the DM12? maybe linked to a sequencer (beatstep pro) or with its own cntrl sequencer.

excellent tutorial dude. realy apprerciate it. Really helped me get under the hood of this phenomenal synth. I own a few in addition to the Behringer - DSI, Moog, Elektron - but I reckon Behringer will have them all pretty nervous making them so well thought out and at this price point. Behringer is really going to shake up this market now that they own CoolAudio chip manufacturer!

Love your format and depth, just the right amount. 👍👍. BTW I just (somehow) realized the DM12 only has 2 OSC wave shapes and they are for both OSC per voice. This feels really limiting, but the DM12 has great sounds. Can you help us understand how to use/deal with this in a video ? Thanks
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, glad you like the format! I actually sold my DM12 when I moved so I won't be making anymore vids with it unfortunately. OSC 1 is Saw/Square (you can toggle both on), OSC 2 is a square wave, but with a tone mod. So you can get complex waves when you combine and mix the two as well as apply the mod.
@legosteveb
@legosteveb 6 жыл бұрын
I was also thinking that given the subtractive nature it’s best to start with the most complex harmonic waveforms anyway. I guess it’s almost silly to have a sine wave OSC when you have a filter and an 8x modulation matrix. If you don’t mind me asking where did you move?
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly, a sine wave is not very useful in a subtractive synth. I moved back to Montreal in Canada, where I grew up.

I know you hear this all the time, but I wanted to encourage you to continue with your videos. You’ve got a great mannerism, speaking voice, camera setup, and a fantastic working knowledge of synthesizers. It really comes through very positively in the videos. Another funny thing is the picnic style table clothes are awesome. I can always find your videos very quickly visually that way :-) By the way I’m working on a project called The NDLR. And I’m always looking for folks to chat about it with, If you’re interested let’s talk off-line. Thanks again for all your great videos. Steve

Hi, great video!! I want to ask you something. I´m not a very expert in synths and we talk some time ago with you about a polysix that i own. So the thing is i´m doing now a lot of sound like textures, low ends and ambient and organic analog synth sounds in the computer thouth the Kontakt. I´m using my nord stage 2 as a main keyboard and i´m using the wav files that i created in kontakt thougth the Nord Stage. The thing is i´m not really using my polysix becuase i have also the korg legacy colletion and i´m creating the sound from there to the nord sampler. SO my cuestion is; I want to sell the polysix and buy a shytn with a sampler funcion as the nord in order to have moore sampler sound sounding at the same time (the nord only can 2). Mey be even controll these new synth thoug the Nord Stage. The sampler función is basic for me now but if the own synth sound or motor is focus on these dark athmosferic sounds it will be great also to use his own sounds also. Someone recomend me the waldorf blofeld keyboard for this sounds and becuase it have 60 M of sampler. I see your video about BEHRINGER DEEPMIND 12 DRONE and i was thinking is also a good choice. What dou you think? What sampler synth you recomend me? Thanks for your time. Chema

cheers, after 3 years of release, how would you say the deepmind aged? do you still play with it? you like it? is it still reliable and resisting well the test of time (in terms of durability)? and the sound remain consistent with the recent development of gear? thank you!

Hello ! Normally, in the "lfo edit" menu when the key-sync is off, the lfo runs freely in the background without resetting itself each time a key is pressed. However when I press a key we can clearly see on the lfo diode that the lfo oscillation is disturbed, and this can also be heard by ear. It seems that the lfo still restarts at a random phase when I press a key. It shouldn't. Can you help me ?

Hi there!!!, I'm in love with your videos, keep making them :D I always loved synthesizers and my dream is to buy one and make songs with it but I really need some guidance to start playing one. Can you give me some advice on how to start and have a basis to start? I'm learning the piano on my own, but I'm really lost on how and when to start with the synths. Thanks a lot!, sorry for the bad English (not my native language)

I would suggest starting with a simple free/cheap software synthesizer (if you have a computer and DAW). If not then maybe start with a simple monosynth like a korg monologue. Get familiar with the basic concepts of subtractive synthesis. I've also made a couple of synthesizer videos aimed at beginners, you can check those out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWLVqYStZahmppo and here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXmpqaCEfMRggZo . So my main tips are: watch as many tutorials on basic subtractive synthesis as you can and read as many online articles as you can, until the concepts "click". Then get yourself either a simple synth plugin or a simple hardware synth and try to understand what each knob/slider/etc does. Then it will just take lots of practice until you start to "hear" parameter changes before you make them. Overtime you'll develop an ear for how to approach synthesis. It's a long term learning process and I'm still learning as I go and picking up tips here and there. Good luck!

Thanks a lot!!!!, I was researching some synths and was in doubt about saving money for the monologue or the minilogue, which one is best for a beginner in your opinion? Thanks again!
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 жыл бұрын
I think both would be fine. Remember the monologue is monophonic so you can only play one note at a time (that's usually a surprise to new synth players). Most synthesizers are monophonic so that's not a bad thing, just something to be aware of. The key to learning about synthesis is having a nice interface that invites you to explore. So I generally like synths that have lots of knobs and sliders for that reason. I've never played a minilogue, I only have a monologue. I think both would be good synths to learn on because of their simple interfaces.

What software do you recommend to start practicing??
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 жыл бұрын
You can start with a basic free softsynth. TAL bassline is free and is a SH-101 clone. That should give you a good starting point to learn subtractive synthesis (you might need a plugin host software too, Reaper is a good inexpensive choice). tal-software.com/products/tal-bassline

Hey there, nice video and very helpful for sound design and using DM12 . I was wondering tho if you could recreate this amazing acid-lead sound Royskopp have using DM12. Best example is in this track Röyksopp - Fat Burner (live @ Rock Werchter 2009).The whole track is based on this sound. They use it in other tracks too. I think it comes from Korg MS-20. My imagination and sound design knowledge is not enough to recreate this sound. Thanks in advance. :)
