I had a nail tech who I went to for years. He was talented at nail art and I loved his work. One time I complained off handed about the lifting I always experienced as he was fixing it. He told me it's because I retained water like my mom.... now my mom was really sick and had lots of health issues and yes one of her issues was retaining water. I was 19. And relatively healthy. I do not retain water. He never pushed back my cuticle, used acetone or a dehydrator. I now do my own nails and am trying to get into nail tech school. I have lifting but only when I know I messed up on application or I have worn the nails without rebalancing them for to long. He was a terrible nail tech. Using my health as a reason for service break down. Especially when it wasn't a health issue.

Bethany Harbaugh there is a sanitization product called barbicide. That’s what you’re supposed to use when sanitizing any beauty products by rinsing with soap first and then using the measurements ratio and leaving them for 10-20 minutes, and after you just rinse them and leave to dry. Of course there’s other ways to sanitize but I’m just familiar with barbicide.

The only way to kill every pathogen on your tools is with an autoclave, but they are expensive, heavy, and they will destroy things like nail files. By far the most common way to sterilize tools is Barbicide. You can buy it at Sally's and some pharmacies. First, clean your tools with detergent and warm water, making sure to get ALL residue from them - particularly important with drill file bits and nail files. Mix 2oz of Barbicide in 1 quart of water. Dip your tools in the solution and leave them submerged for at least ten minutes. Then pull them out and rinse them and let them dry. One thing it doesn't kill is tuberculosis (unless you get the special TB Barbicide, but it's kinda nasty and will corrode tools eventually) but it will kill nail fungus. Never work on an infected nail. I think it's the law in most states that you can't touch infected nails.

I find it really amusing to see the different ways ppl do their nails on different countries/cultures. I'm from Brazil, and here we have a completely different approach on nails. Have you ever thought of comparing/testing different manicures from around world, Suzie? It would be quite a fun experience to watch! :)

Now I'm curious what they do in Brazil?
@carolina-ex2kl

had to watch the whole video back to remember all the differences! 😅😅😅 but one of the main ones is that here there's more focus on the natural nails rather than using enhancements/extensions (although there's a lot of ppl who use them, is not a majority), so the prep is all about that natural nail. another difference I can point is that here we tend to hidrate the nail, nail bed and cuticles. it's normal to soak the hand in water with emolients to lift the cuticle - which we usually nip it all out. we never ever file the top of the natural nail (eventualy we even buff it to make it smoother), and we spend more time on shaping the free edge/tip of the nail (even if planning to apply enhancements/extensions). that's all I can remember now - there's been quite some time since I last went to get my nails professionaly done (I do it myself at home most of the time and only go to a nail saloon/tech if I have an special event comming up).

@@carolina-ex2kl Thank you so much for coming back to watch the video and answer my question 😍 I actually looove all the attention to the natural nail! I feel like we could use more of that in Europe (where I live). It almost feels like nail stylists and manicurists are totally separate jobs: one is more about decorating and the other more about caring. Thanks for sharing the cultural differences on this subject! ❤️

So glad you talk about nippers! I'm in NSW Australia and for us, it's a big deal. They consider it to be a skin penetrative procedure to cut around the proximal fold, and some councils, including where I live, ban the practice. I lived in England for a few years, which is where I first used to get my nails done, and they always did it, so when I came home I was so bummed to find out they don't do it here once I started beauty school. Thank goodness for chemical cuticle remover lol

She has a layer of gel ( she said she had gel on, if I recall correctly). When you remove the products, you always leave a thin layer.
@bertdellestep1215
@bertdellestep1215 5 жыл бұрын
You don’t have to leave a layer actually. You can soak it completely off. She chooses to leave a layer sometimes so it’s easier to start A new set. You are completely able to soak off the entire nail. Flaky damage is often caused by over filing during nail prep. Too course of a file or ripping nails off. I have never taken off a proper set that was done by myself of anyone else reputable that had nail damage.

Thanks for the excellent nail prep video. I've been getting back into acrylic after 35 years, and there have been a lot of changes since the early 80s! I think I'm better (or at least more patient) at application and sculpture now than I was, but I do tend to get lifting early on. I think I've been a little too conscious of nail plate damage and maybe leaving a little cuticle here and there, which would totally explain the lifting. I have *very* sticky cuticles.

Thank you SO MUCH!!! They didn't teach us much in California's cosmetology programs way back in the early 80s. I think the state board requirement for the full cosmetology program was only 20 sculpted nails, or something ridiculously low. I did many more sets than required because that's what I wanted to do, but everything was trial and error. I spent a LONG time filing lumpy acrylic. I only took the full cosmetology course because my "beauty shop owner/beauty operator" (her term) grandmother couldn't see that I could possibly make a living as a manicurist! She was blind to the trend. The second thing I struggle with is apex placement. I have a tendency to get the apex too far forward. I think because I'm trying to get the acrylic thin and smooth at the cuticle. My natural nails have a high c-curve and a very acrylic-like apex. I think I just need to replicate it ~three to five mm thicker from the apex down the center, keeping the thin cuticles and sidewalls, and stop fighting it. Oddly, I don't have the apex issue when I do my son's girlfriend's nails. It's just easier to get the right shapes on someone else's hand.

I've just discovered you & been binge watching your videos the last weeks! Love it! So much beautiful nails! Please do a video for us with "thin/smooth nails". No matter the tricks, my nail technician (or me) can seem to get normal nailpolish, gel polish or acrylics to stick for very long. It chips or lifts very fast, just like we used a peelmoff base coat (but we didnt). Especially due to the natural nail hitting something and bending/flexing or being too smooth for adhesion. I'd love to be able to wear a beautiful gel color for 2-3 weeks or have acrylics - but it just does not stay on :) I'd love some tips! Hugs from Norway

Such a terrific video. I would love the Ugly Duckling products but they are only available to licensed nail technicians. I would prefer the use of products that are available for the at home nail amateur. I realize the basics are the same though - prep the nail well before applying any other products.

I think I might need to get myself an e-file for my cuticles because I tend to stress tear them off, so I try to keep them trimmed but then I usually end up cutting myself trying to get the super hard to reach spots that your e-file seems to have no problem with. I also love how perfectly smooth it leaves it as well since part of the reason I pick at my cuticles as well is nothing has been able to get them smooth & the roughness causes me to pick at them, but maybe an e-file is the answer to my problem!

I rarely get lifting with gel nails, bit with acrylics I do despite following a routine like you showed. Is it possible that some products agree and stay more on the same client than other products? Tks For these awesome instructional videos.

Suzie thanks so much for your videos. They are so informative and helpful to me. I’ve had to start doing my own acrylic nails due to not having enough money for a tech. They must be done because I have ridges in my nails, which won’t go away. My question on this video is when you use the e nail drill the 1st time, what is the kind of drill bit you used called, so I can purchase one? It was white looking and very narrow. Thank you, in advance, for your response.

I love you Suzie!!!!! 😚😚😚 I take so much better care of my natural nails thanks to you!! I do not get fake nails because of all the trouble I have had in the past (really bad infection, meds, pain, and horrible ugly nails) but I treat my nails great. I soak once a week in warm lemon water and exfoliate well. Then, I put on hands booties hehe, and let that soak in for about 10 minutes. After that I apply a base coat, ridge filler and a natural polish tone and voila!! Thank you for all the info, love you much girlie!!!

Your my favourite Suzie! Please can you help me? . I've just started doing Gel Nails extensions and a client contacted me last week after 4 of her nails popped off! It was only a week after I did them. I thought I did the nail prep properly so is there something else that can cause the entire extension to come off? Maybe the gel was too thinly applied or I didn't cure enough? Thanks

Hi Susie, I’ve been watching your videos for a few weeks now and want to start doing my own nails however, I don’t want to work with acrylic and plan on working with poly gel doing the bare minimum, like very short overlays. I’m pretty simple when it comes to nails. It’s been about a year since applying any nails due reckless care from a tech that I use to go too. I was wondering is primer necessary for overlay/very short polygels? It sounds scary and I’m quite concerned LOL. If anyone wants to chime in you are more then welcomed! In fact I insist I would love all the pointers I can get.

I personally like to do my own acrylic nails and about 3/4 days after I do them there’s at least 1/2 of my nails that start lifting. I do most of these steps and I’ll definitely start following all of them to help.

Thanks so much Susie, this is a great video. I always have some kind of lifting and now I know that it's probably from the oils in my skin and nails from the hair and body butters I use every day. Over the last few sessions I think we've finally gotten the lifting under control. However, with my current set, the acrylic has separated at the top edge of the nail. I am thinking that the top edge wasn't properly sealed and oil or water (or both) got between my natural nail and the acrylic. If this isn't the cause, can you offer any advice as to what caused this. My nail tech is also hooked on your channel, so we'll both be educated on this one. LOL!! Thanks and much love from the Netherlands!!

Hey suzie some nail salons in my area advertise bio gel and seaweed gel nails but the products they’re using are a powder and a liquid. I thought that was how acrylic nails were done? Ps. Love this video! Most places I’ve been barely do what you’ve shown here, now I know what they should be doing! Thank you!
@ladyinmauve

Bio Seaweed carries gel polish, lacquer polish, and soak off builder gel & soak off sculpting gel--they do not make acrylic. This is a discount salon and the workers are lying to everyone they service. They may not even be licensed to do nails AND are probably using mma liquid monomer. Gel will ALWAYS be gel!. They are charging an extra $30+ to put on a topcoat of either soak off gel or hard gel that must be e-filed off. This pisses me off to the max!!. Please look at videos that feature Mary Negron--she explains this very well.
