I like them both. But "Promises, Promises" is definitely my favorite of the two. In fact, there are a few other Naked Eyes originals that rank higher in my book than "Always Something There To Remind Me." Although all of their material is great!

Was in Europe in the 80s, when this song hit the air waves. Sounded good then--sounds just as now, in 2024. I always say that the 70s was my decade for the music that I loved, but the 80s had its share of great reminiscing and thinking you're on top of the world music. Promises-Promises was definitely one of them.

I had just started first grade. Lol, I am 44 now. This easily is in my top 5 80’s songs of all time. My love for 80’s music, especially New Wave, started in Elementary School. It’s amazing how dark this video is considering how upbeat the song is.

This is an example of lyrical dissonance. The lyrics are so sad, yet the music is so cheerful. Then, of course, the video takes the darkness of the lyrical content and amps it even darker.

Also a big MTV hit in 1983 a great year for music. Bought this 45 around the second week in was in the top 40 and still have it. Their keyboardist Rob Fisher died in 1999 age 39 (stomach ailment) so sad.

Thanks for posting the lyrics to one of my favorite songs of the eighties. Another one with a similar message is Taken In by Mike and The Mechanics. Very jazzy. Most remember The Living Years but Taken In has a special place in my heart for songs about fools. Everybody Plays the Fool sometime. That one's from the seventies. Then there's Promises, Promises by Dionne Warwick from the sixties. Totally different song but just as good. Written by Burt Bacharach RIP. Who also wrote There's Always Something There to Remind Me.
