You're right. Maj. Adewale confirmed this. Maj. Christian Anuforo was also a patriot who joined the coup after witnessing the Tiv massacre on private orders from Ahmadu Bello and Balewa. Many don't know that Tiv land was a Christian land before 1962. Soon after the massacre, they became Muslim. Maj. Adewale believed that Ahmadu Bello had plotted a jihad disguised as a coup to be carried out on January 17th, to be led by Murtala Mohammed. On the same 17th, another coup was plotted, and Victor Banjo was the recruiter. After discovering these plots, the Nzeogwu group decided to rush their own coup and change the date impromptu to the 15th of January, which was partly responsible for its failure.

I've always liked Maj Kaduna.. Maybe because we were born and raised in the same kaduna, but am not happy with how his role has been explained by historians for so long, they made it seem as if he was an ethnic bigot, whereas he wasn't. He wanted to do well for Nigeria but I believe the coup was sabotaged by others.

I won't call the coup senseless. The plotters saw where Nigeria was heading to and they tried to arrest the situation. Unfortunately, some of the plotters were deeply tribalistic and this led to sectional killings in the coup (it was basically a coup against Northern and Southwestern military officers and politicians) The second blunder was poor planning to arrest or eliminate Major General Aguiyi Ironsi. He was the main man capable of squashing the coup and he was kind of overlooked (fueling the sectional killing more) We're experiencing a very bad socioeconomic situation in Nigeria now and that was what the plotters were trying to prevent.

A tribal coup and ethnic cleansing. Period. The noise making ogre claimed it was to clean the government: The president of the country, senate president, speaker, deputy senate president-- all were igbo SE origin. None of these people were killed, and Kanu Nzeogwu was seen very happy and smiling because he and his other igbo brothers were successful at killing all other ethnic people in power. NO COUP OR REVOLUTION FOR CLEANING UP CORRUPT POLITICIANS WAS EVER CARRIED OUT THIS WAY IN THE HISTORY OF AFRICA. IT WAS A MASSIVE GENOCIDE AND ATHNIC CLEANSING
@dadajulius6489
@dadajulius6489 5 ай бұрын
The Coupe plotters claimed that there was corruption among top officials of the Government then. The question is....was it really worth it? This Coupe can be said to be the "Genesis" of ethnic distrust still existing till this day in Nigeria. It led to a counter coupe which snowballed into the civil war. Even after the civil war, the country has never remained the same. I don't think the issue is about the ethnicity of the coupe plotters (5 Majors...4 Igbos and 1 Yoruba), I think it's more about the aftermath and dire repercussions of the coupe. In my personal opinion, I think it tore the Unity of the country apart. I believe that that coupe failed to achieve it's aims. They wanted to eliminate corrupt politicians in Government then but they didn't eliminate all their proposed targets. This made a section of the country to strongly believe that it was an ethnic coupe even though 1 of the key plotters was from the southwest (of Yoruba extraction). The echoes of that coupe of January 15th, 1966 is still somehow reverberating in Nigeria even up till this day. Your videos are educative and well presented. I'm a lover of History. Well-done my brother.👍🏻🙂

That is what igbos refused to learn that the 1966 coup is the foundations of the ethnic trouble in Nigeria It can never be possible for mainly igbos officers with just two Yoruba soldiers to cleanse Nigeria without a single northern soldiers And at the end of the day no single casualties from their side but only Yoruba and northern casualties

If is not ethnic coup how come no Igbo extraction wasn’t killed . How do you explain that
@HispleMedia
@HispleMedia 5 ай бұрын
@@jimo424 good question... If you read Oil, Politics and Violence by Max siollon, you will see that the plotters made a mistake right from the beginning. Here is it - in a meeting prior to the coup, the issue of whether to take of spare life was discussed but there was no consensus. So the plotters agreed that the issue should be left to the leaders of each unit to decide base on the circumstances on the field. This was a big blunder. Such an important issue should have been agreed upon. The should not have left it open. That is where their problem started. While Nzeogwu in the north killed his targets others in the south bungle the whole thing leading to the suppression of the coup and one-sided killings. It's important to say at this point that whether or not it was an Igbo coup is immaterial at the moment. Nigeria has reached a point where we must come together or we perish together as fools. Thanks so much for your feedback 😍😍

The coup of 1966 was the worst in the history of Africa even up to this moment. The plot started in England according to eyewitness. It led to downward spiral of Nigeria and Nigerians are still paying the price for the coup.

We can not be afraid of history, neither can we sweep it under the carpet. For us to heal, we must confront the truth through history so that it will not repeat itself. While the coup was largely planned by the igbos and its so obvious that almost all the people that died are other ethnic Nigerians, it doesn't justify continued Igbo marginalization and subjugation. We must revisit history, apologize to one another because no group is completely wrong or right. Then we can love one another even if we all want to go ourcways as Oduduwa, Biafra, Arewa or Middle belt nation. If we don't heal before parting ways, we will continue to be hostile as different nations.

There was disagreement among the plotters on whether to kill there target or not. This was the beginning of the failure of the coup and the subsequent one sided killings. Max siollon reported that the coup was bungled from the start when an important task such as taking or sparing lives was left for the individual plotters to decide. While Nzeogwu killed his targets in the north, those in the south were failures. So even though the coup started with a national interest in mind, it derailed and ended badly. Thanks for watching😍

It appears that the early Nigerian military officers were driven by tribalism to butcher themselves and any other politicians the putchists hated. This military driven arnachy took Nigeria back several decades, and weakened the Nigerian military, due to its purging some of its best trained personnel. Perhaps it is for this reason that the Nigerian military later failed to deal effectively with subsequent threats such as the Boko Haram insurgency.
