As a person of colour (ugh!) not born in the UK, I took some 18 years of lawful residence before I applied to swear allegiance to HM Queen and her heirs and successors. I may have been been ambivalent about the Monarchy, but I was happy to pledge my loyalty to the UK - and 'Er Maj embodied that. I had done so only after I became steeped in the history, culture, humour, talking about the weather and of course the institutions, including Parliamentary democracy, the rule of law, pubs and football. I knew what I was embracing. I paid my taxes, worked for public service organisations, gave my time as a school governor (including several years as chair of a 90%+ white school) , a BBC community panel member, an elected councillor and oh so much more. I strived for equal opportunities and the humane treatment of refugees. I have friends of all faiths and none, my children have gay god parents. But never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that the country of my adoption, that I know and love, has come to this. I may still retain centre left leanings, but I am now sceptical about the immigration policies adopted by successive governments. This is not the place to get into all that. But I thank Nana for pointing out that sensible, reasonable and right thinking people (and that includes POC) are quite capable of rejecting herd mentality and pointing out the importation of conflicts elsewhere into our own communities. It is easy to point just at the government. It is all institutions and public bodies too that have succumbed to the loudest most unreasonable voices. The consequences are difficult to reverse, but we need to start an honest conversation. Sorry for the long comment, but this is truly upsetting.
