Please. Guys. The portals connect 1,317 *solar systems* -- a tiny fraction of the approximately *20 billion* in Milky Way Galaxy, alone. So the portal doesn't "connect galaxies," it connects solar systems in one tiny little part of *this* galaxy. 🤨

Regarding bone density loss in space, remember that one of the advantages of the Epstein drive is the constant acceleration that is present during the majority of a trip to a destination. I think most ships travel at 1/3 G to optimize fuel efficiency. So an Earther on a ship would have much slower bone density loss than current ISS astronauts.
@PsychoMuffinSDM

The protomolecule is basically an AI or something close to it. It was told to go to Earth, collect whatever biomass it finds, create a gate and contact its makers for new orders. However, in the last season it found the gate hub was locked, it couldn't unlock it on its own, and needed help to unlock the hub. Now, it's still trying to fulfill its orders and contact the species that made it, and it still needs help to do that since the systems are so old they've largely broken down. It's not doing what it's doing out of curiosity, animosity, or anything like that, just a machine trying to follow its programming and report back. As for Miller, it absorbed his memories, so it knows Miller's a detective. Since it's trying to figure out how to report back, it's using him and his memories to figure out what's wrong with the old alien systems.

The book did much better at descriptions of the landing pad explosion. The show really glossed over it and didn't provide a good visual. In the book, the ship was almost landed when the landing pad was blown up and resulted in damage to the ship and a crash from relatively low altitude (hence, why most people survived the crash), where the show made it almost seem like they were shot down from a higher altitude and higher velocity.

Nerdy, you don't remember the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who? Hardly anyone liked the recast of Arjun. That's not to disrespect the actor, Gregory Beneyar...he's just the wrong actor to continue how Brian George had presented the character to us. Brian George gave us a very mild and gentle character. Gregory Beneyar in both appearance and demeanor presents a stronger character. After The Expanse had been originally cancelled...remember, it had been flat-out cancelled...Brian George had snagged another contract before Amazon picked the series up. Inners like Martians and Earthers use ships to get form rock to rock, and thus (thanks to the Epstein Drive), they always travel at 1/3rd gee, which is probable enough to maintain bone density. Deep space Belters like Naomi and Drummer spend much more time in full zero gee from infancy, thus they never gained high bone density in the first place. If you had captions turned on, you can see that when Bobbie tried to introduce herself to the Martian officers at the reception, the one Martian said to the other, "She's the one who got our team killed on Ganymede." So the Martian Navy scuttlebutt is that she's responsible for the Ganymede incident as well as the two Martians killed on the Behemoth. Remember how the first season was mostly the noire detective genre? The aspect ratio switches are a key to the genre of this season...you ought to be able to figure that out before they outright tell you. It's a common movie trope...I believe Denzel Washington did it most recently. Proto-Miller said when he first appeared, "I'm a tool that finds things, you're a tool that goes places." The Ring-building Protomolecule device is trying to contact its masters; Holden is nothing but a tool in that effort. The Roci team hasn't yet found the glob of Protomolecule.

"remember, it had been flat-out cancelled" - No, it hadn't been. I told you before, remember? Alcon Entertainment owns the show, and to quote one of their CEOs: "Unlike the way that it's phrased, which I've always had an issue with, in the press, they [SyFy] didn't cancel the show, because they couldn't cancel the show, we own the show, it's ours. They couldn't cancel our show. What they did, to be very specific, is they elected not to continue to license the show for their rights based upon the contract we had." I was a mere 16 days between SyFy dropping out and Amazon picking it up. That's not enough time for Brian George to "snag another contract". He never had a contract as a series regular anyway, he was a guest star, only appeared in 4 episodes of season 1, and in a single episode of season 2 (S02E05 "Home"). He could have become a regular in season 4, but had landed another job by then. That job was a main cast member of the NBC sitcom "I Feel Bad", which started production early 2018, before The Expanse season 3 even began airing. PS: "not to disrespect the actor, Gregory Beneyar" - his name is Michael Benyaer.

If there is any confusion as to why Bobbie is being so poorly treated by other Martians, she received a Dishonorable Discharge when she was kicked out of the Martian Marines; while that might not seem like a big deal to the average person for a former soldier it is a giant black mark on her record that is equal to committing a felony. In a highly militarized near-authoritarian society like the MCR such a mark would make it almost impossible for her to find a decent or respectable job. While we know her actions were nothing but heroic as far as the Martian authorities are concerned she is at best a malcontent or at worst a traitor to Mars.

Regarding the bone density issue, Astronauts only lose bone density due to the microgravity of being weightless in orbit. In The Expanse they can travel long durations burning continuously to create at least 0.3G acceleration, which significantly helps prevent Inners from Earth and Mars from losing bone density. The Belters grow up in 0.3G or less, and therefore never develop significant bone density, preventing them from safely traveling down larger gravity wells like Earth. Belters also cannot handle as high accelerations compared to Earthers, so Earthers ships can literally travel faster than Belters. Martians can only survive on Earth and at high Gs because most of their military trains for high G in case they ever need to invade Earth directly.

Your discussion of WOT made me wonder, any plans on doing a readthrough of the expanse after the show is over?
@StarkRG
@StarkRG 7 ай бұрын
Bone density loss in astronauts is about not being subject to the constant strain of gravity, however ships in the Expanse are almost always under thrust. I think it's usually 1/3 g like on Mars, but military ships, particularly MCRN ships, go for a full 1 g to maintain their readiness for surface engagements on Earth. I'm guessing the Roci accelerates at 1/3 g or maybe 1/2 g for Naomi's comfort. Space stations rotate to provide gravity to maintain bone density for workers, probably also at 1/3 g because it simplifies construction, but the higher up you go (closer to the axis of rotation), the lower that apparent gravity will be. The rich people, usually the Inners, live as close to the outer parts of the station as possible, leaving the poor Belters to live in the lower-gravity sections with greater Coriolis forces. This is why, in a very early episode of the series, we see Miller pour a drink and it flows sideways. If you're not moving, centrifugal force pulls you straight down (outwards from the axis), but anything falling will seem to move anti-spinward (the opposite of the direction the station is rotating). If you throw something spinward it'll drop faster than you'd expect, if you throw something anti-spinward it'll appear to stay airborne longer and, if you throw something along the axis, it'll curve anti-spinward. Centrifugal sports would be really interesting.

Regarding the overused idea of "AI = deadly threat", Hollywood in general clings to the theme that "there are some things mankind was never meant to know", so anything new and non-human becomes a danger. Books that explore these kind of ideas in great depth and complexity usually wind up squeezed and oversimplified into the same pigeon hole in the movie version. (Not saying that is the case in The Expanse. Not surprising that the Protomolecule has different priorities than the human civilization. Its programmed loyalties are to its original designers, not to other alien species.) I like how Asimov handled A.I. in his book "I, Robot". (Not whatever the movie was.) Susan Calvin (the robopsychologist) has a fondness for robots, and usually likes them better than her human co-workers. She also has a healthy respect and fear of them. In the short story "Little Lost Robot", she points out that the robot in question was stronger and could think faster than humans, but it was disrespected, treated as a slave, and verbally abused by a researcher who lost his temper. If the robot's behavior wasn't constrained by the Three Robotic Laws, the very-human reaction would be to not put up with that kind of treatment by (inferior) beings, potentially through violent means.

Well, one way Earthers avoid that problem with bone density is how their ships travel. In the current space station, there is no acceleration (except to keep the station in orbit) so they are constantly in free fall, the equivalent of perpetual 0G. When traveling in ships in the Expanse, they are under constant acceleration for half the journey, then flip and burn the opposite way for the rest of the journey in constant deceleration. So they use the acceleration and deceleration to generate simulated gravity of as much fraction of a G as the Belters on the ship can handle. In ships piloted only by Earthers, they would likely accelerate/decelerate at 1G or slightly higher to maintain bone density. The only time they would experience lower gravity is when docked at a non-Earth port.

It's interesting, in the books, Naomi is not on the planet. She doesn't even have any interest in being on the planet. She's a Belter. Belters live in space. She tolerates the gravity for a few hours while the Roci lands on the planet, but she's very happy to just get back into space, where she belongs. Also, Ilus is a larger planet than Earth. It has 1.5X Earth's gravity. So it's VERY rough on Belters. It's even tough on Earthers. Ilus is just VERY valuable because of it's MASSIVE deposits of lithium.

The TV adaptation brought Naomi down to the surface for a number of reasons, I suspect: one of them being that there are simply too many plots going on in most books to fit all of them in a TV season and it's an easy one to cut completely or fold into events on the surface. Mainly though, I think they do it to illustrate some of the perils of belters trying to adapt to higher G environments via a main character who we are invested in, to see her wondrous awe moment of landing and stepping out into the wide open space, and to show how deeply invested she is in trying to protect belter rights.

Why different galaxies? There are 100 billion stars in our galaxy--the portals don't need to lead to other galaxies.

What is interesting about travel by wormholes is, any gates that are right next to each other could be on opposite sides of the galaxy, or even in another galaxy. Unless you can get a fix on some familiar astronomical objects, you may not be able to tell where in real space you ended up.

@@mjbull5156 while that may be correct, access to the ring space and hub is via the rings, and they did not travel through worm holes. As far as we understand, they arrived as protomolecule delivered by asteroid, moving slowly enough to be captured by planetary gravity wells. They couldn't have come from another galaxy in just a couple of billion years. The ring destinations are within our galaxy

Hey, guys... I see you keep talking about "another galaxy"... But as far as I know Ilus is still in the Milky Way (about half way across the galaxy). The Galaxy is about 100 thousand light years across, so all the rings actually lead to other planetary systems inside our own galaxy, up to dozens of light years away. There are some small, satellite galaxies which are closer, but Andromeda, the closest fully fledged galaxy to ours is about 2.5 million light years away. This just goes to show how mindboggingly big the Universe is, with estimated 200 billion more galaxies other than "ours".

Sort of. Some people incorrectly attribute it to the brief "cancellation" of The Expanse, but that had nothing to do with it. The actor, Brian George, had landed a role in the main cast of the NBC sitcom "I Feel Bad", before season 3 of The Expanse even started airing. Here's what showrunner Naren Shankar said in an interview with Culturess: Culturess: When watching season four, I had to do a double take with the change in casting for Avasarala’s husband, Arjun [originally played by Brian George, but replaced by Michael Benyaer in season four]. Why the case change? Shankar: The thing about it, Brian George, who played a Avasarala’s husband in the first two seasons, had become a regular on an NBC series and we tried really hard to get him back because we loved him, and he really wanted to do it. But the schedules just would not permit, and we had very little flexibility because of how we were able to shoot it, and Michael Benyaer we brought in. It’s not something that you do lightly. And certainly, we loved Brian. It’s a tough thing to do. It does happen sometimes on shows of this nature where characters come in and come out, and you know, I think Game of Thrones went through this a few times with different characters. Yeah, and you try to do your best to avoid it, but it’s not always possible. And here's Ty Franck from the "Ty & That Guy" podcast, episode 50 about "TheExpanse407" (timestamp 7m0s): Wes: Did we talk about the recasting of her husband yet? Ty: I don't think we have, we may have talked about it briefly. Wes: Do you want to talk a little bit about that and how that sometimes works in shows and how that happened? Ty: I mean it happened because Brian George wasn't available. He... a 100% of the story is, Brian George, um, we had talked to him about coming back, he said he was interested in coming back. Then when we reached out to his agents to to sign him up and go through the casting process, his agent came back and said, "oh, Brian just got signed as a recurring character on a sitcom", and I think that sitcom was only a one-season sitcom, or if even that, it didn't last. But if you have a chance to be a recurring character on a sitcom as an actor, you take that because that is just, that's a fat paycheck and so nobody was mad at Brian for taking that over coming back to us. Like, we would not have paid him nearly what he would have gotten paid for doing multiple seasons of a sitcom. So, that's fine, I mean Brian's doing what he needs to do for his job. But it meant we didn't have that character, and so yeah, we had two choices. Either we don't use the husband character at all in season four. Or we recast, those were our only two choices, and we seriously considered just writing the husband out of the show when Brian couldn't come back. But the argument was made in the room that so many story lines in that season involve her relationship with her husband, that if we just wrote that out, there would be this big hole in the Avasarala storyline, and we weren't sure how to fill that hole, so the decision was made to try to recast. And recasting is always hard, it's uh... audiences always think that they're fine with recasting, and then every time you do it, the audience will get pissed at you. So, it's a hard decision to make.

I dunno about life 'just as easily', especially with regards to silicon. Life on Earth depends on... well, a lot of things, but there's *way* more silicon in the Earth's crust, so if silicon based life could develop, it wouldn't develop anywhere that people could live.

Yeah you pee out your bone density in space, the body always looks to be efficient and you just don't need the bone strength, there's no resistance so it gets rid. It's not a gradual thing either, the day you go up your body will start to adapt to it and shed needless calcium.

I usually wouldn’t bother, but I’m drunk so who gives a f. The Lavender Brown casting was kind of messed up to start with. I won’t defend changing the actor after JK described the character in a later book, (her skin colour really didn’t matter) but casting one of the few black actor as the background character named Brown, kind of bad.

This is why I get so confused with people. You guys talk about literally considering the existence of life being “miraculous.” You say this because the concepts of evolution are EXTREMELY far fetched to the human mind, and you’re admitting this. If you really think about it, it just seems too coincidental. Whether you belong to a religion or not, you have to admit that the one thing most have in common is “an act of creation.” In fact, in English, many atheists refer to the universe as… “creation.” Evolution is constantly being rewritten, almost every month a study is published about how part of the “theory” is wrong and needs to be revised. It’s been that way since the idea was first proposed, and it’s very foundations are flawed making all its conclusions unreliable. (side note, just the fact we know WHEN the idea of evolution was first proposed, makes it less likely to be true.) There’s no way it would have taken humans that long to realize the truth of where we came from. And yet it is taught in schools as FACT. That’s a failure of the scientific method, contradicting its own validity. My point is this… believing in an eternal, yet personal God who created everything is both less far fetched and more desirable.
