Growing long natural hair has a science to it. Our natural hair grows monthly. Average hair growth is 6 inches a year that is 1/2 an inch monthly. When you're not noticing that 1/2 an inch each month nor the 6 inches each year is it because your hair is simply not growing? Or could it be other factors? In today's chat, I speak a bit about my growth setbacks and what I am doing to overcome them. I also discuss my theory as to why it seems as if the hair is not growing.

Girl this video is NEEDED in the hair community! We all want long hair but we also need patience and good hair practices. I know for me and the way my shrinkage is set up, it seems like my hair doesn't grow at ALL! If I wasn't creating videos and filming my hair, I would seriously think something is wrong with my hair. You are so right, retention is where the problem is. I know I be ripping through my hair lately and then I'll complain that my hair isn't growing haha. These 5inches of growth overnight irritates me as well but these videos get MILLION of views so... I can see why people keep making them.

You, Jenn, ripping through your hair? I could not imagine it! I watch your videos too and strive to be as gentle as you when handling my hair. The worst thing I've done to my hair is let it get blowdried with the comb attachment. Any sort of comb and a blowdry is a bad idea for my wet hair. Now let me leave my protective style alone. I was going to disturb it coz I wanna look cute. 😁

I have learned that my lack of exercise and not eating enough wholesome foods like leafy greens, fruits, and healthy meats was the cause of my hair not growing to it's full potential. Eating the more alkaline foods( overall raw vegetables) caused more nutrients and oxygen to get in my hair follicles. The exercise help my skin as well as my hair and actually putting this into practice helps saves money because my body is now functioning like it suppose to with having to buy products to do the work. Also I stop idolizing other people hair and fell in love with my own! And one more thing ladies don't become discourage! Just because your grandmother or mother hair length wasn't long doesn't mean yours won't be long either. They probably didn't know about healthy hair care practices either. Grace Thank you for your tips and input on what really matters when it comes to natural hair!

I left my hair in 4 plaits since quarantine lockdown. It’s grown a lot. Just leave the hair alone works...and wash your hair every week (I do a wash hour, 10 mins to shampoo, 10 mins to deep condition, 30 mins to detangle and re-plait) That’s it.

THANK GOD SOMEBODY FINALLY SAID IT ! There’s so many videos on KZbin and Ig saying “fast hair growth” where the person making the video is always showing some magical “hair growth oil” telling ppl to buy it so they’ll get 7 inches by the time they wake up . Not knowing that growing hair comes from a healthy scalp ! You have to do more than just apply an oil overnight , you have to do the work. Are you clarifying your scalp ? Are you trimming your ends ? Hydrating / moisturizing ? Deep conditioning ? Are you limiting the tight hair styles you get that’s causing so much tension to hair and scalp ? Are you eating properly ? Drinking water ? NO … but you want to listen to these ppl who probably have the length they have due to genetics etc . Please just stopppp

When I was studying for a big exam, my edges fell out, my nails and hair was breaking. At that time, I was taking vitamins, eating healthy yet not sleeping. My stress levels were so bad, I had other health issues that occurred. After the exam, I gave myself two months to recover (started sleeping and exercising) and I stopped taking vitamins just cause I got lazy. Within the two months, my hair breakage decreased and my hair grew longer and my nails got stronger and longer. I say all of this cause you are right. Our hair grows but if we are not taking care of ourselves, chances are we are losing length. Also the point of a natural hair journey is acceptance and I am learning to accept the highs and lows of my kinky 4c hair. Sometimes when I do feel negative of my hair, I just pray and thank God for my crown and my love for it is renewed.

My natural struggles were breakage and retaining length. I found out that those struggles were within my control by having a consistent hair routine and treating my iron deficiency. For years I neglected my iron deficiency, and I didn’t know it caused breakage on the back of my head. Now I take iron pills and include iron rich foods in my diet. Your health could be a reflection of your hair, so I’d suggest if you haven’t already to check with a doctor!

Same here. I kept it in braids and left it for 3mths at a time, washing every 2 weeks and doing over the edges every 2 to 3 weeks as needed. Now I'm bra strap length and want to enjoy it so now I do loose braids and I'll leave them in for about 2 mths at a time. My go to hairstyle is just 2 cornrows, 1 on each side, and I'll tuck the ends into each other. So I turn my low manipulation style into a protective one. Edit: I'm leaving them in for a mth instead. I've noticed strands trying to be free so they could live their best lives lol so to lessen my anxiety of breaking them i'll do all the braids over monthly

My natural hair struggles is laziness, when I’m on point… my hair growth is retained! It’s Not super Doper fast but noticeable. I have to keep my mental health in line and myself accountable to avoid careless mistakes like not mosturizing my hair on daily or every other day basis. That what works for me ☺️

Same with me. I could have had longer hair the past 5 years after my second bc but laziness and high stress levels did their work. Now I try to be consistent as possible and if I leave a washday out, I do it the next day. As she said, a healthy hair habit is key. ☺️

It's especially harder to tract growth with natural hair because of shrinkage. I big chopped 3.5 years ago and see a major difference in density more than length. I'm only past shoulder length even though most people can grow APL or BSL in that time. I keep up with quarterly trims and take excellent care of my hair so I know I'm doing everything I can. We have to accept that some of us have slow growth and there's but so much we can do to accelerate it.

Hi these are some of the things I started doing and noticed my hair is growing longer and thicker 1. Drink 8 cups of water daily 2. I included Salmon, Kale, Spinach, Sweet potatoes, blueberries, Walnuts, Sunflower, Chia, Pumpkin and Sesame seeds in my diet. 3. I use black strap molasses 1 tablespoon in 1 cup of water in the morning this also helps with gray hair. 4. I take my vitamins daily - Vitamin D3, Vitamin C, Iron (Megafood Blood builder), Zinc and Magnesium 5. Exercise daily 6. Protective style - Braids 7. Wash my hair with water filtered using an Aqua Bliss High Output Revitalizing Shower Filter. I use a clarifying shampoo first then follow-up with a moisturizing shampoo then deep condition using heat. 8. I am protein sensitive so I removed coconut oil from my product list and I check the product labels for protein. I only use Aphogee protein products every 4 to 6 weeks. 9. You have to look for products that work for you. My hair loves Argan oil products I use the Creme of Nature Argan Oil Moisture & Shine Sulfate Free Shampoo and the Perfect 7-in-1 Leave-in Treatment (I dilute this with filtered water. I also use products containing Shea Butter. I usually make my own hair butter using raw Shea butter, Jamaican Black Castor oil, and Olive Oil and Vitamin E oil. 10. Trim ends as needed using a hair cutting scissors and use the scissors for cutting hair only.

It’s definitely me ...once I started paying attention to my hair I realized I needed to protect my ends as much as possible. for example when I would wear weaves and not touch my hair my hair would grow. whereas if I have my hair out and constantly touching it it would grow less, as in more split ends and single strand knots.

I do believe in the growth cycle. I think genetics determine the cycle, how long the cycle is going to last and how fast the hair grows. Our hair is not going to be in the growth phase forever. Some people's hair grow 1/4 in he a month for 3 years that may be all the hair they can retain. There's no point stressing yourself If your hair isn't breaking and you are doing everything you should be.
@digitallocations1423
@digitallocations1423 3 жыл бұрын
If that was true many people would go bald every three years, but they don't because hair isn't all naturally supposed to be at the same growing phase. Some strands should still remain even when it sheds.

I did a little experiment. I installed a temporary loc at the back of my head to see if my hair wouldn't grow past a certain length genetically, or I was the cause. Turns out I'm the cause. That loc is currently about 3 inches longer than the rest. That's 6 months of growth I threw away. I really thought I was taking good care of my hair, but apparently not. I, unfortunately, suffer from trichotillomania. My mother told me my paternal grandmother used to pull her hair out, too 🤦🏾‍♀️. I currently have a small, but noticeable bald spot at the left front side of my head 😞. I know this is the reason why I can’t retain length, as well as not exercising (which I have been trying to do more often). While I don’t eat unhealthily, I haven’t been eating as much greenery as I usually do. Oh, and I’m TURRble when it comes to getting the proper amount of sleep. For the past two years, at least, I’ve been going to sleep at 1 and 2am and even later. I honestly can’t even remember when I consistently went to sleep prior to 12am 🤦🏾‍♀️😩

My downfall is mechanical damage. And I think my maximum length is mid back. I don’t think my genes are set up for waist length. So I am just trying to have healthy hair and get my density back. There was a time when people were scared to deal with my hair because it was so much.🤣😂

Really enjoyed the REAL info in this video.. I became a product junkie in 2020. I decided to pick one herb at a time and use it ( can’t throw away my money😂) consistently to see if it improves my hair health and eat more greens. That is one think I am lacking in. I want length but most of all I want hair health. Love your content

Thank you so much. Because of you my hair has grown so much. My natural hair struggles are single strand knots and splits (not even at the ends of my hair). Since the beginning of my journey, my hair has always been in twists and a satin bonnet. I don't manipulate my hair a lot and my moisture game is on point but I still get knots and splits. This led me to cut my hair regularly in multiple attempts to get rid of all the knots and splits but it didn't work. I've come to accept them as part of my natural hair journey and my life is easier.

I think I have a combination. Sometimes I'm not consistent but extreme stress makes my hair fall out - I've had to start over at least 2 times in the past 7 years. It grows back, but I do have to cut it all down so that I don't have strange patches of hair and everything is pretty even.

This is why I went the microlocs way, I get to enjoy my hair wearing it out 'manipulating' it with braid outs etc. I never liked buns cause of the tension however I couldn't wear my natural hair loose consistently without shrinkage, knots and breakage😕. I have fragile strands. It seems just touching it would cause breakage.....So now I am seeing my growth and really enjoying this natural journey with low maintenance . At the end of the day it works with my preference and my lifestyle!

My hair journal does reveal all. I can pinpoint everything with it. That's how I realized that my hair responded better to full strength henna treatments as opposed to henna rinses, mini twists weren't my friend, and that my ends prefer Shea butter sealing over oil sealing.

Also to your point at 9:50 I think we maybe need to look at, are we forcing a hairstyle that isn't suited for length retention? I started my loc journey about a year and a half ago and a lot of people achieve longer lengths that loose naturals because our breakage prone ends are not impacting the hair in the same way and the tangled prone hair is actually beneficial to the process. Sometimes it's not the hair, but the hairstyle. So knowing that going in can maybe give peace to people who hit a ceiling.

If you are constantly messing with your hair in it’s natural state it will not grow! No Matter how many videos you watch of natural hair which they upload weeks and months later and the only ones that upload close to daily have reached their length goals! Natural hair is not complicated some women with natural hair have no patience. Just braid it or twist it for weeks at a time a month even better then watch how much it’s grows! It will blow your mind when you finally leave it alone and allow it to do it’s job your hair does not need you to do to mess with it everyday! Protective styling is to protect it from you!!!

My natural hair struggle is to comb my own hair. I am not good at combing my hair, all I do well is to comb my hair in one whether it maybe high are low and protecting my ends. I normally keep that in for a week or two depending on how I feel. However, I ensure that I mositurize during the week when it feels a bit dry. If I really need my hair to comb in a style other than having it in one, I will have to go to the hair dresser. This is what I really want to improve on learning to braid and put my hair in other styles that really looks good.

One really good detangling method for me is combing my hair with steam, you can do the q-redeem steamer, or get you a headed steamer that also comes with a like face hose so that way it’d make it easier for your hair. If your low porosity, you hair will love the steam as well.

Growing back my hairline/edges has been the BIGGEST challenge of going natural for me. It was the damaged hairline that set me on the path of becoming natural since from 2016 when I transitioned from relaxed hair to February 2017 when I did the big chop. This is my 4th year and I'm just beginning to see some change/improvement on my hairline. Length has never really been my focus as I believe healthy hair will ensure growth But like I have noticed, my hair is presently at its healthiest yet the hairline remains an issue. I really don't know what more to do. BUT I must say (with a smile) I really love my natural hair now. I'm NEVER going to relax my hair ever again. I will be grateful for tips that work well to grow back edges.

My focus was never on length just healthy hair and successfully regrowing these edges.August i will be 2 years natural- I have only used onion juice for 2mths and i am happy with the results...just follow up with a moisturizing conditioner or deep conditioner(no after smell).

🤔?!? What is happening ?!?🤔 When I found your channel, I binged watched your videos, charting the 10 years you have posted of your hair journey. Thankfully I have figured out how to best care for my hair now and love doing it, after years of not knowing how to properly manage it. A few pieces of information that has helped me, has come from this channel. It has always been fun and informative to watch your videos. Watching this one though, is a different matter entirely. I have notice more recently, several people comment under your videos, that despite all of the knowledge you are sharing, and being natural for more than 10 years, your own hair journey is not producing results in terms of hair health and retaining length. Now it’s like everything you have been saying over the years and all the science, suddenly doesn’t apply, because you haven’t been taking care of your hair. Not saying setbacks can’t happen in all aspects of life, but it would have been more honest to simply say you are struggling with knowing how best to manage your hair and the aspirations you have for it. This video comes across as resentful, not only of the failings of your own journey, but that of the success of others. This was disappointing to see. 🤷🏾‍♀️
