"If we stay calm, it protects us from absorbing the feelings of others." I experienced this firsthand as I stood before a threatening, yelling, profane, and disrespectful police officer. I stood there completely empty. Eventually, he gave up attempting to provoke a response from me and walked away.

Anyone calling themselves a Jehovah's Witness is most definitely a narcissist. This is my helpful contribution on the subject. Narcissists love to feel that they occupy the moral high ground, so be careful. Just because someone goes to church really doesn't mean JACK!

Congratulations to your new found liberation.😁 I am an only child and my mother is a vulnerable covert narcissist. She will call me and start with the veey happy (lure) or the “woe is me”( another lure).. if these are not successful she will drop the facade quick and try and drag me into anger enmeshment. I tell her to knock it off, her ruse is a con and I ain’t buying it... she is 87 yrs old. Misery is not my company😌

Those of us raised in dysfunctional familes were conditioned to having our empathy weaponized against us because it is an easy get for a manipulator. Empathy is human, and healthy, but it can be hijacked by a manipulator, and when that happens it becomes unbalanced and dysfunctional. We must stay connected to our empathy for ourselves, first and foremost. A lack of empathy is dysfunctional, such as an abuser's lack of empathy for the target of abuse.

The being curious and not reacting is THE Hardest skill for me to implement. I am always trying to defend myself bc i work so hard to treat everyone with respect, consideration and care. And then when the other person starts making accusations I just blow up. It's like how dare you say I'm doing or not doing these things when I'm putting forth so much effort to carry my load and be considerate of you. What has helped in this case is to step back and ask if I'm considering the other too much or giving too much if other ppl are taking it for granted and not even acknowledging my efforts.

I have always had trouble absorbing others feelings, then making myself sick worrying about this or that. I get triggered when people get upset or yell. A light went off, when you mentioned these things, and now I know it is from all the drama, and stress from a child. Duh. I didn’t get that until now. I just thought I was wired to be overly sensitive. It is nice to have someone explain all this, and give some tools to use to stop. Giving us permission to not worry, ( it isn’t really unkind or uncaring) and tools on how not to react is so helpful. Staying on my own side of the tennis net, (I play tennis) is a great visual to help me too. Thank you. ❤️

This one came up again.. I am going to have to save this one.. I would also add to not absorb angry people's energy.. I had someone try cutting me off in traffic today and I wouldn't let him and the car in front of me waved him in front of them so I waved him in that direction.. Right before we went on many vacations my mom would corner me until I would put my hand through the wall.. I thought it was so that I would release her energy.. I had a revelation that it wasn't about her releasing her energy (anger).. It was so she could stay (justify) angry.. People are going to be angry whether I do something to please them or not. I am definitely going to save this video.. Good Stuff.. . I have also been reading up on the Bowen Family Systems.. Wow it is pretty hmmm advanced isn't the word.. Maybe thorough is the word.. I can really relate to it..

I think that I need to write down some of the beliefs that I have - about myself, my family, my roles in my family, and my roles and place in this world - that have helped to keep me stuck. This video helped to give me a starting point for that, because one of my beliefs is that I am 100% responsible for my mother's emotional state, and her emotional well-being, that it's my job to always prop her up, even at the expense of my own needs. There are a lot more, but that's the first that comes to mind.

In a healthy relationship, empathy and understanding is very important. And should be a two way street to overcome life’s challenges. It should be about growth. In a narcissistic relationship all bets are off, it’s a one way street and a set up. They are master strategises and they are the perpetual insincere. They can try mimic empathy at times, but you know them by their fruits. It’s fleeting, shallow and ultimately about them.

Thank you, once again, Jerry. What you said about worrying is so true, and I would add that a narcissic person could try to trigger worries in ourselves to try to reconnect/get us back. Also about the "flying monky" situation that you described in the end, I've just realized that I've experienced a similar situation at work, a long time ago, where someone brought me rumors about my team's hypothetic difficulties, and I did wrong by defending myself and my colleagues, and being angry at him, instead of staying calm and asking what does he really experienced himself ! That's powerful. Thank you again.

Yeah, it is a journey to become your own person. According to my children it developed in the natural way. The older they got the lesser I worried etc.., but with all the other people active work was necessary because there is no natural bond as they play games.

Abandoned is a feeling? I thought that would be more of a judgment or perception. Thinking I'm Abandoned would cause me to feel scared and lonely. Is that not correct Thinking about it? Ive come to realize I cannot be Abandoned by anyone but myself and I dont do that anymore. I just get confused on what are true feelings and what are systems feelings or thoughts.

Thanks for your comment. It's true. Thinking that you are being abandoned is like abandoning yourself. Brilliant.

One thing that helps me with "systems feelings" is to look at my situation as if it was book or movie and I was a character in the story. Then I can look at the situation outside of myself and consider if I am feeling certain ways because I am trained to, or because I should feel that way because it is a healthy way to feel. For example, I have a hard time saying no. I feel guilty, "bad", mean, and selfish. If I stop and consider the situation, I can see that I am not "bad" for saying no. Being able to say no is healthy. I have to train myself out of feeling like a bad person because in my childhood, I was trained to always say yes or comply with my parents or I would be yelled at, threatened, told I'm not allowed to feel that way, ect.

Great advice. Going try that today 😃.

Basically we are all actors outside of ourselves with the exception of people who are truly self actualized like Eckhart Tolle.

Every day you bring a new understanding to my life. My mom haranged my older sister about her weight. It was torture knowing how much my sister felt. Verbal beat downs occured almost daily. She lived a lifetime of unresolved anger not understanding the lack of maternal love.

Dr Jerry, is it possible for me to have over used empathy to avoid looking at my own stuffed emotions?

Such a great video but I do wonder why I feel dysfunctional since my mother never showed true empathy If it is a useless emotion/feeling. I literally have a notebook full of notes from your videos. Thank you Sir 💕❤️

I'm really glad my videos are helping you. Often we are showed a dysfunctional vision of empathy or we learn to feel dysfunctional empathy. Healthy empathy- I feel my own pain and I can feel my pain about the other persons pain. dysfunctional empathy- I feel their pain and I don't exist in the relationship equation. How about let's change the context- how will act differently towards yourself - and others - if you felt more empathy towards yourself?
