Hey, learners!
This lesson will help you master direct and indirect speech in English.
Direct and Indirect speech
There are two ways to narrate what someone said:
Direct speech
Indirect Speech
Direct speech: It is a way to narrate what someone said using the speaker’s exact words. The reported speech (the speaker’s words) is placed in quotation marks and is offset using a comma.
Indirect speech: it is a way to narrate what someone said but not using the speaker’s exact words. Unlike a direct speech, it is not placed in quotation marks and separated by a comma.
Direct speech: Sandhya said to me, “I love talking to you.”
Indirect speech: Sandhya told me that she loved talking to me.
Note: ‘That’ in the indirect speech can be eliminated too. The sentence is still correct without it.
Indirect speech: Sandhya told me she loved talking to me.
Changing the tense of the reported speech in indirect speech is called backshifting.
In the above example, when we are reporting the speaker’s words in indirect speech, we backshift the time(tense) of the action to further back. It is done as the speaker’s words might not fall true or relevant at the time of narrating it to someone.
But when you are narrating the speaker’s words right after it is being said, you don’t need to backshift the tense.
Let’s suppose we were at a party. Sandhya and I were exchanging words. You were right there too. She said, “I love talking to you.” You didn’t hear it. You ask me, “What did she say to you?”
I tell you that she said that she loves talking to me. It is fairly unlikely for her to change her mind in just a few seconds. ;)
Watch the lesson to master it!

Sir , recently , I came across this sentence and I got confused about the back shifting of tense here . direct speech: didn't Lucy tell you we were coming today, he asked. Indirect : he asked whether Lucy hadn't told me that they were coming . Why there is not back shifting in past progressive tense.

Sir , In newspapers I have read this type of sentences many times: 1)The Govt. will not issue a red alert ,officials said. 2)Out of the five people ,one is a foreign returnee, a health official said. **If these are indirects then verbs of the reported speeches should be changed accordingly but if these are direct then reported speeches should be enclosed within inverted commas. What type of speeches are these?? Please explain.

@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 2 жыл бұрын
The first one is incorrect. We don't use future tense in the first clause; he will say. ❌ He said... You report something in speech. For that, things must already have been shared or told. Second: He said that I wasn't a child.

Hai brother, gud afternoon I did my homework 1. Rahul said that he loves playing with me 2.she said that he had never said anything bad to her. 3.Jacob informed me that they are planning a party the following week. 4.the teacher said to sat Down quietly. 5.he told me that u had been studying in ur room . (Actually in this 5th question we don't need to use had been because here we didn't mention time reference, so we simply use " were" like " he told me that u were studying in ur room).
