Have you noticed two bright objects in the sky getting closer together with each passing night? It’s Jupiter and Saturn doing a planetary dance that will result in the Great Conjunction on Dec. 21. On that day, Jupiter and Saturn will be right next to each other in the sky -- the closest they have appeared in nearly 400 years! Want to learn when and where to look up? Join our expert astronomer Dr. Henry Throop on #NASAScience Live.

@@heathergustar638 Hahahaha. The excellent and cute girl was enthusiastic about space, I have to admit the astronomer was a little over the top, but no problem, he did a great job explaining everything in simple terms. It's just that we don't picture scientists behaving like that usually, we have preconceived ideas. Heather, are you a miserable person?

The stars are not getting bigger they will remain the same size util they explode like in go nova, of course after they use up all their fuel as in the heavy elements , in fact the stars and all other objects are moving away from each other at great speed until the universe at some point in the future, billions and billions of years the universe will become dark. Learn some science dumby. So do you think there will even be humans around that far into the future to even see it happen ?????

Good job! One other way to explain the 800 year cycle of Jupiter & Saturn has to do with the sectors of the sky we see them in (from Earth's perspective). They come together once every 20 years, but will come together in one Astrological element over a 200-year period. Then, they move into the next Astrological element for 200 years. Basically, they move about 120 degrees each time they conjunct. This is why their conjunctions remain in certain elements for so long. Being that there are 4 sectors (or elements), it takes 800 years for them to make the full cycle. As you said, the last time that Jupiter & Saturn came together in the area of the sky they are presently in (Tropical Aquarius), it was in November of 1226. I love that you just knew that.

I saw Jupiter and Saturn just the other night and they were very close together. I am hoping to take a picture with my telescope on the 21st, weather allowing. I love space and NASA and all things space related. So exciting. Will be watching from North Georgia.

During the great NE power blackout some years ago, the greatest manmade phenomenon occurred. You could actually see the glory of the Milky Way from New York City. Just as the first pioneers saw it back in the 1600s. Today, you are lucky to see only a few brightest stars, the moon, and bright planets like Venus and Jupiter.

The one question I have for you NASA is how many moons can you physically see with a telescope from Earth because I photographed six of Jupiter's moon so far but all they are a little points of light. I'm using a q-seeker 127 so my mirrors not that big

When Jesus was born a group of Angels sang as they announced His birth. They appeared in the East where the wise men lived and hence they began their journey to where the moving group of bright Angels stopped over where the infant laid. They also was seen by the shepherds tending their sheep. They also left to see the place where the young child lay. The bright Angel's then left. Their job was done. Read the story in Matthew chapter 2
