Interesting, I never watched K-drama or listened to K-pop and after 1 year learning Korean my listening, even though I practiced with our student's book listening practices, was really bad. My classmates were all k-pop k-drama fans and they just understood a lot more. Then in the summer of 19' I began my K-drama journey and the listening part improved a lot. Also sensing some newly learnt grammar in the k-drama I am currently watching has been a lot of fun.

When I watch kdrama I have caption on, and I have those habit that every time I listen to what they say and pause the video and repeat what they said and read the captions to understand what they said 😂 same thing for kpop i start singing korean and learn the whole lyrics in korean and English 🤣🤣 i love your video. So helpful!!❤

ahhhh~ that's a technique called sentence mining! haha if you do that, it's more like studying~ I'm specifically referring to the people that think they can just watch the drama and become fluent~ While I'm sure even that would work if someone were to do it for years, I'm just trying to emphasize that it's not the most efficient way to study~

Point is you were one of the people I've found to look promising, Im glad my gut is good to me because after watching like 3 videos of yours Ive learned more tips about Korean than my Spanish teachers ever gave me in the two years I've (unwillingly) taken Spanish in middle school and highschool. I love your side commentary about your experiences and truth along your path learning Korean and studying abroad and I believe I will continue to learn a lot from you in the future!

7:00 I'd have to say that I learned Japanese by adding hours and hours of listening practice(music/anime/news/talkshows) in addition to my regular vocab/grammar study and it is extremely helpful. I think the big point is that you can't just ONLY do that because like you say it'll just go over your head.

Did I mention German in this video?? LOL I don't even remember 😂 You're not a stupid potato~ You're a smart potato~ Just continue what you are doing~ Continue to study grammar and learn new vocabulary!I recommend How to Study Korean's website! It has amazing free lessons that include both grammar and vocabulary. Their explanations are very thorough as well! If you need something that also includes listening, which I highly recommend since you are a beginner, I would check out the channel "Mini Teaches Korean" and "Korean 언니!" I also recommend TTMIK if you don't currently use their KZbin channel to study Korean.

You always give such good advice~ I've been studying Korean for 1 year (my study is on a hiatus bc of uni u no) and I struggle getting past the upper beginner stage :( do you have any specific advice for this ?
@NataliaGarza
@NataliaGarza 5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm My advice to you would be to just continue learning vocabulary and grammar structures. Personally I could feel the jump once I learned... maybe.... 80 intermediate level grammar structures? I'm sharing the number with you because I want you to have a point of reference, but the reason I could feel the jump was because I was able to better express myself and understand others. Continuing to grow your vocabulary is also vital. At the time, I was studying about 100 words a week (not because I wanted to, but because I needed to for my classes). Oh! Also! I didn't remember all those words haha I would say I only truly learned about 500-700 of the words that I studied that year. In other words, I would say you just need to keep going! Continue to learn new words and grammar patterns, and eventually you'll realize you've hit an intermediate level. That's what happened to me. I felt like my Korean had plateaued for about a year until one day I realized I was intermediate lol (The year that I felt I was stuck was the year I was in Korea learning all those grammar structures and vocabulary words.)

I disagree with you with dramas for listening (and learning). I just started to study korean and it’s the third language that I’m learning. Although you can’t use ONLY dramas as a study tool, that’s how I learned English in the first place - just by watching Harry Potter endlessly when I was 12 and being curious with the dictionary (no internet at the time). So I’m doing the same with Korean, I picked up a drama as a study object and I’ll watch it all repeatedly again and again so I’ll complement my study. I do agree, though, that if you only watch, and don’t analyze and pause and go back a few seconds, it is useless lol. But if you watch the scene, go back, repeat the lines out loud, it’s actually really helpful.

Watching kdramas and listening to k-pop does help with pronunciation for me at least but yes I can say that it isn’t the best for listening. I recommend listening to the Korean news or podcasts of natural conversations just so that you can understand the way Koreans pronounce certain words so that it makes you speak more naturally. This is just a tip sorry if it makes no sense.

Me and my younger sister both challenged ourselves to learn a new language so she decided to learn Russian and I decided to learn either learn Spanish or korean. I'm probably gonna learn Spanish first because it's way easier to learn and it's kinda similar to French(I live in Canada so I've been learning French since I was 9) so I'm probably gonna learn Spanish and then move on to Korean because it's a lot more complicated.

Here is a really good tip for listening. It takes long and to be honest it’s a bit of a hassle. If you have Netflix, the subtitles are always English and they usually have Korean too. Variety shows especially because language is slightly less formal than on a drama. So listen to a section say of 5-10 while reading English, make sure you fully understand the entire context of that situation. Then switch to Korean subtitles, watch the words and then listen how the words blend together, listen what gets emphasized and what almost is said so softly or blended (if that makes sense) that you don’t really focus on saying it as loud as the first part of the word. And thennn try without subtitles and see how you progress. It takes long, but I promise you it will make you more aware of how you listen and what you focus on

한글 is definitely the best start :) ive only been studying it for just iver a month but at first i just started without really knowing what to do and hsd a bunch of apps, it was overwhelming because i was trying to memorise the words that were just appearing on my screen in letters i didnt know at all 😭😭 but then a week or two ago, i learnt 한글 and now i can read and write a little bit (like short sentences) because i learnt it :)

I want to learn Korean as my 3rd language but I am struggling to learn by myself. I learned my first language, Spanish, because my parents were Mexicans and didn't understand English. I learned how to read and write in Spanish by myself to understand more things, which I'm not very good at. I learned English at school because it was important, it was a bit hard because most people at school knew Spanish so talking in English was rare. I learned a bit more because I practiced with teachers and non-Spanish speakers.so, learning Korean might be hard because I won't have someone that knows Korean to talk to me and I don't want to talk through online because I'm a very shy person. I am excited to try and learn. Wish me luck !!!

I am here to learn Korean because I just recently discovered how much I really enjoy Kdramas because of how soothing the Korean language sounds to my ears! So my love for Kdramas and the Korean language turned into curiosity about Kpop and I only just discovered Exo and BTS in January of this year....( I am late to everything, story of my life!) Glad I finally discovered Kpop; just sad that I am joining the Exo-L and ARMY fandom so late in the game! But I look forward to catching up and learning a new language and culture along the way!

Yeaaaaa watching shows is a lazy learning situation. they can be helpful though but you need to be actively learning not just, ya know, watching t with subtitles or listening. Like music for example, pick a song that has good grammar and not to much distortion (slower sad story based songs are good for this), find the lyrics and translate them, to understand the vocabulary and grammar. then sing along with the song making sure you remember and understand what's being said. In saying that, I haven't tried this method for Korean, only Chinese.

I started learning Korean last summer, and I honestly did NOT review at all. I would just fly through lessons and call it a day. I ended up forgetting everything I learned. I was pretty inconsistent throughout that time too because of school, but recently I started to learn it again. This time I'm starting with 한글, and making sure that I review everything. I hope it works out, but your videos make me very motivated! Thank you! If anyone wants to be internet study buddies, please lmk too😭🙏🏻💞

I 👏 BECAME 👏 ADDICTED 👏 TO 👏 K-DRAMAS 👏 AND 👏 I 👏 NEED 👏 HELP My korean journey : (that just started) So I was like I'm bored in quarantine and there's nothing to do soo I was like lemme learn a new language and suprise the people at school...... Then I was like which language..... Then it hit me how about Korean...... (Cuz I'm already a kpop fan buttttt thats not my only reason for learning Korean so don't come me) I did some research like how to start Learning Korean and EVERY SINGLE website said to learn the Hangul I tried but I was like nahhh imma learn it the way NAMJOON learnt English soo I started watching k-dramas and got addicted.......then was like ok time to get serious......so I started learning Korean in February and till now I only know K-drama plots....and k-pop songs.....and the numbers and a little bit of the Hangul so I was like alright now enough is enough and it's time to actually get serious...go I started with the Hangul (not my first time cuz I tried to learn it in the beginning) and I actually learnt it pretty easily now.....so my next goal is finally starting grammar....and practice reading......wish me luck 😉

Watching current era Kdramas (for fun) has helped me get some basic words down and there are quite a few now where I don’t “translate them in my head” and I realized I had looked away from the screen one day and I understood a sentence. Granted, it was a short one, but still. Accomplishment. 😂 Active listening isn’t purely for fun, but watching a scene with/without the subtitles and studying that way can be fun or at least a nice change from your regular studies (cause I’m bored easily) haha Kpop is harder cause they don’t pronounce words like you would irl (like any singers), but even though I wouldn’t call it STUDYING, it’s nice to be able to pick up words that you couldn’t before 😅

I have an American accent when I speak Korean, but I am Korean-American. So sometimes people have difficulty understanding me when I speak, but they pretty much figure out from the context. It’s also interesting because I kinda speak naturally, but if I’m trying to write something, I actually have to think about how things are written.

This video opened my eyes on the listening, reviewing and plugging in my own words to the sentences I've learned. I have an app called Memries and I'm learning Korean. BTS inspired me to learn because of them, their music, and their videos in general. It would be nice to not rely on captions for everything. I am currently taking a break from Memrise and am now just reviewing the words and sentences I have learned. Thank you for this video and I will definitely start practicing the listening part soon!

I’m trying to learn and taking an online one on one class with a Korean and I’ve had 3 lessons with him so far and the last one I had the other day, he did say my pronunciation wasn’t that good. He was nice but honest. I need to work on that. And memorizing the vocabulary he gave me which was about 34 words. I memorized what the English word is after looking at the Korean words but then he told me I need to memorize what the Korean word is when looking at the English word. That’s HARD! Haha
